I see what you are saying. Its an up and down cycle. My graduating class at NewCath had 84 students the following class was around 125ish. Numbers will go up and down every few years. the cost of catholic schools will be the down fall of many of the schools IMO

18 Frosh playing. That is a good sized class. I don't know anything about talent, so I can only answer 1 part of your question. The Jr High has a lot of kids w the youngest Kelly bro and Cain coming up. Eventually NewCath will have a lull, but right now, I don't see it. Take into account the number of Sophomores seeing significant minutes and I think that it will be ok. How those kids mature will determine how they compete against the big boys, obviously.

This years senor class at NCC, had the smallest Freshmen team in years, and look where NCC ended the season 2-3 years later, winning another state championship, and headed for another this season. NCC will be fine.

Both NCC and Brossart had smaller freshman classes this year. Cov Cath picked up about a dozen kids from St Joes cold spring which is abnormally high. The economy is a huge factor with parents not willing to make the sacrifices required to send their kids to private schools. Combine that with the fine effort that Campbell county public schools have put forth. New buildings, new facilities, test scores on the rise and finally some pride starting to build in the county.

From the grade schools on up I think it is a threat to private schools in Campbell County.

I've been in focus groups discussing these issues. Hopefully the diocese realizes the environment and makes strides to keep private schools affordable and still provide the top notch education they have always provided.

They have had a Frosh team every year since the late 90s and could have had a Frosh team this year. The 06 state championship team had 18 on their Frosh team. But the problem now is no one else has a Frosh team other than the large schools (except Beechwood) so they are constantly playing with 15-20 players against schools that have 50-60 Frosh. Lloyd, Scott, Holmes, HC and all the 1A schools have gone to a Frosh-Soph team and that is where NCC needs to be.

 

When KY went to 6 classes the 2A schools faced a choice of non-district teams to play. You can fill out the schedule basically as hard or as easy as you think you can handle. Some years teams like NCC (and Beechwood and Holy Cross) can compete and beat the 6A schools, some years the 6A schools are going to be the best and deepest teams they see all year. The main concern is having so many guys having to play both ways when playing teams that have 60 or more kids on the roster and doing that 5 consecutive weeks.

WHY????

I think most private schools have dry spells now and then. Cyclical is the perfect word to describe it, Lawnboy. Newcath may be headed into a dry cycle, but they are coming off a 2A title and have lost two close games to nice teams. However, Newcath has always competed well against bigger schools, so I don't necessarily buy the 5A/6A vs 2A scenario when it comes to them. If it were Lloyd or Newport, I would buy it. Newcath is annually a top 5 power, so it never shocked me when they's beat someone bigger than them. Truth be told, I expected them to beat Campbell and Cooper, but they're just not there yet. They'll probably start 1-4, but that's okay. Dan and his staff will coach them up and have them ready for November.

 

Cyclical but not as few and far between as a Bellevue or Ludlow. Those are schools who have to wait every 8-10 yrs to really field a solid team that can give Beechwood a run. NCC should not have to wait more than a year or two for a dry spell to get better.

NCC is just fine. They will do just like they did last year. They will lose and be somewhat competitive against bigger schools early on and then will march like a Sherman tank through a terribly weak 2A field and will make it several rounds into the playoff before they are ever challenged if at all. Every year will be similar regardless of their numbers except for a year here and there where they have enough talent to beat a bigger school or two.

Because it is ridiculous to question the future of NCC.
