In theory I agree with you, but the reality is they needed to play both ways to be competitive. There are more schools that have players going both ways than not. Cooper isn't the exception to that rule they are among the majority. Put it this way, Boone is platooning for the first time this year and they are 6A. Most schools do it than not.

 

I'm not talking full platooning. I'm talking about minimizing players that go both ways and/or how much they play two ways. Cooper's situation with players not coming out is indicative of a bigger problem. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If players don't thing they willl get opportunity to play, then they stop coming out. You miss out on some solid players that way. Some that are solid to begin with some that will likely develop into solid players.

They lost a great deal, including their outstanding QB, yes. I think Simon and Dixie are improved, Ryle is a crap-shoot, and Campbell Co didn't look the part in their scrimmage with CovCath. I think they could finish 3rd or 4th, depending on their game with Ryle. I think Simon and Dixie are a clear-cut #1 and #2 up here (in 6A).

The scrimmage against Cov Cath was just that. A lot of trying to see what works and a lot of substitutions of the first string. The defense returns the majority of starters from last year and appear to be a quicker and tougher from a year ago.

 

The offense is the wildcard. They have a good core coming back and I believe it will be a more balanced attack. I don't expect or think they have to replace Tyler with one or two kids but a cast. With the improvements to the defense they may not have to score 30 or more to win games like last year.

 

I do agree that NKY 6A has greatly improved over last year. Dixie and SK both gained a lot of momentum towards the end of the year. Boone's new approach will be interesting to see, and Ryle more times than not finds a way to make it work.

Other than Ryle in the top 10 I don't see the above as shaking it up. I could see SK and Dixie being #2 and #3. Of course, CCH gets Dixie next week so we'll get an early idea. In other words, it's quite open.

 

As I posted in my article, there are probably 7 different teams that you could list in the top 5 after Highlands and make a legit argument for them being in there.

 

I personally think Covcath, Simon Kenton, Dixie, Conner, NCC, BeechwooD, NCC, and even Scott are going to be pretty good and will rotate in and out of the top 5 throughout the season.

 

Covcath v Dixie next week is one game I'm really looking forward to.

Scott does....and it is MUCH nicer. SK has the bigger weight room, but that's about all they have on the facility at Scott. Top notch all the way around.

Yep. It opened two years ago. Slightly bigger than the one at SK. Individual locker rooms and coaches offices for Soccer (boys and Girls), Football, Softball, and track. Laundry facilities, top of the line concessions, weight room, batting cage, and trainers office. It's only right down the road from Independence....

I think you guys are forgetting about the Cooper Jaguars. They lost their QB sure, but they still have the best defense in local 5A and should be an NKY top 10 team. Think about this: A state finalist is returning seven starters on offense and eight on the best defense in the district and they have yet to be mentioned on this thread until this post.

That's because, I'm sorry to say, the three best defenders are gone. Getting shutout in a scrimmage doesn't bode well.

What?? So if they go 8-2 this year and win a playoff game, they don't deserve ranking because they don't field a true freshman team. Many have mentioned that what you do at the Freshman level is not a real great predictor of future success. They play in the Froshmore league mostly because of numbers. It doesn't make a lot of sense to play a freshman schedule with only 16 or 17 kids. That being said, they could possibly end up playing a freshman schedule next year, as Woodland Middle School has over 30 8th graders on the team this year.
