They do because they don't have the numbers and athletes yet to platoon.

 

For instance last year they only had 6 sophomores come out. So you have to wait until you have the numbers to platoon. The next couple years should be much better, I think they had something like 20 sophomores come out this year and should have similar next year and that is how they need to build to start leaning toward platooning.

 

I would guess in about 4 years they will be leaning that way a lot more than having players go both ways.

 

Actually there were 13 sophomores on the roster last season.

What?? So if they go 8-2 this year and win a playoff game, they don't deserve ranking because they don't field a true freshman team. Many have mentioned that what you do at the Freshman level is not a real great predictor of future success. They play in the Froshmore league mostly because of numbers. It doesn't make a lot of sense to play a freshman schedule with only 16 or 17 kids. That being said, they could possibly end up playing a freshman schedule next year, as Woodland Middle School has over 30 8th graders on the team this year.

Well, if all you want to do is be 9-3, then I guess it's a success. I don't know who you scheduled this season. Holmes was 8-2 a few years back, they played no one outside of HHS and cov Cath. It got lickert the CCHS job, guess it was a success for him. If Scott could keep their talent in house and not lose it to beechwood, they could be very competitive. They certainly have the facilities.

4. Simon Kenton- 2nd Best QB with 3rd best OL, and best D-Coordinator

6.Scott - Best RB and 2nd best O-Line (was 6th in state in rushing yds./game and return main components of that)

7. Cooper - rebuilding or reloading

8. NCC- great small school program but new Head Coach

9. Beechwood- Tradition is a powerful thing.

10. Campbell County- Great Head Coach with a good feeder program

What does Public School vs. Private got to do with it? A lot of parents like Hellbird want to believe that their kids are just so much better than the other 40 kids and should be playing both ways. It's simply not true. Every team has top talent, but its the ones that figure out how to get the most out of the just above average players that Win. I'll take a fresh average talent player over a tired, over-played stud any day. I'm not really talking about full platooning necessarily, but more minimizing the number of players that go both ways and especially how much time they play both.

 

From the thread that VOR started I am learning that full platooning is certainly the exception, but I have to believe that there are very teams in 5A and 6A that are playing more than a few players two ways. Even the best small school programs minimize full-time two-way starters.

 

Has a lot to do with it. Public schools have classes that come in waves. You will get exceptionally good classes some years, and then a few years later you don't have as much talent. It happens. Private schools are at an advantage in they can replenish easier than a public school when they do not have district restrictions and what not.

I think its interesting that everybody keeps bringing up all the new "facilities" as if a new indoor facility or score board or coaches office will translate into winning games. Anybody familiar with Beechwood would tell you that back when they went on their State Championship run their "facilities" were far from state of the art. : )

It doesn't automatically translate. I wouldn't characterize Highlands as having top end facilities and they seem to do well. It is a factor to some though, and may help draw people to the program in the world of open enrollment. Combine the new facilities with a couple of winning seasons though, and now there is more interest in the program, which will help keep/draw talent to the program. But you're right......it's just one piece of the puzzle.

Count the state titles that each private school has up here and then their immediate rival (Highlands/CovCath and Beechwood/NewCath) it isn't close. I don't know, I'm a "what have you done lately" kinda guy. How many state title has beechwood won in the last 10 years? How many does ncc have? To compare HHS and cov Cath is not really fair either, considering they are in the same district. I know it's an if, but how many title does cov Cath have if HHS was in 5A, or cov Cath was 3A or 5A? I'm talking last 10 years. I don't care what your schools did in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's. hell, Lloyd was good then. Newport was good then. Schools and areas change, the dynamics change. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems the cool thing to do is play for a school you have no business attending. Just seems that pre 2000's, kids stayed in their areas and play for the high school in the town they grew up in....
