July 26, 201313 yr Author As a coach I hear the athletic and fundamental thing a good deal. I agree that in the past that is was code and it has continued in many ways. My question is how else do you describe a team that has a number of good athletes? It really just depends on how it is said I guess. I can be blunt and I'll cut to the chase and just say the team is predominately black or predominately white. I think there are tons of people who will say athletic or fundamental and mean nothing by it. I also think there are a couple who will say athletic or fundamental and they are trying to be cute. I do think we all know the implication when those words are used though.

I agree and while not as big of an issue I have seen white players not get the credit for their athleticism due to being white.
July 26, 201313 yr I agree and while not as big of an issue I have seen white players not get the credit for their athleticism due to being white. I've seen that and I've seen black players not getting credit for being fundamentally sound. On another not how much difference do people feel there is between stereotypes and racism?

My question is how else do you describe a team that has a number of good athletes? As a basketball coach, let me speak on this. Many times...not always of course but its not uncommon at all, teams with athletic players (of any color) will /can get away with things because they are so athletically gifted they can make up for their mistakes, and may tend to not be quite as "disciplined", or maybe structured could be another term to use, simply because often times they can get away with mistakes that a less gifted player can't and they can tend to rely on their athletic ability. The less gifted players/teams, on the other hand, many times to be successful they need to be more structured/disciplined if for no other reason than they aren't physically gifted enough to make up for mistakes they might make. Example: A kid who might be able to jump out of the gym and over everyone else may tend to not block out as well as the kid who HAS to have good position and block out because he can't jump. I have this struggle with my varsity team all the time. 95% or more of my kids haven't been/aren't talented/athletically gifted enough to make up for mistakes they make/could make and I am always on them about being displined on the basketball court, be where you are supposed to be, do what you are supposed to do and when. Run the offense, be in position on defense, BLOCK OUT. Some of them never get it, some do. Now, when you take an athletically gifted team and teach them to play solid, disciplined basketball...THAT my friends is a thing of beauty.
July 26, 201313 yr good read and good discussion but my hackles went flying up when he suggested " Detroit" was a code word ... Cmon now -- Thats a huge reach and if our skin is going to be that thin we will never get where we should on racial relations .. I'll say this -- I sure dont know whats it like to be black and have the " hairy eyeball" placed on me by anyone just because of it . And it exist . It sickens me some of the talk I hear from a FEW white friends . We have progressed pretty well in just a few decades . Thats one good thing I give younger generations credit for -- race haters are thinning out .
July 26, 201313 yr The "athletic" and "fundamentally sound" posts remind me of the thread where "well spoken" was discussed.
July 26, 201313 yr Excellent question. Not sure. I think we can all agree that one stereotype is that if you are black you can dance. Now I wouldn't consider that racist but maybe someone else would. When I typed the question about stereotypes and racism it made me think of the opening scene of Crash. It's a great scene between Ludacris and the guy that played the main role in Meance to Society.
July 26, 201313 yr The BET editorial is one of the most racist rants that I have read. The author assumes that because there is a discrepancy in responses to pollsters' questions, that the problem lies entirely with white respondents. There is no doubt that there are many racists in this country but no race has a monopoly on them. How many black authors will even acknowledge the racism among blacks? If white people were as racist as the author assumes, Obama would never have been elected president. The deterioration in race relations over the past 5 years have been largely due to Obama, Eric Holder, and others in the current administration exploiting race for political gain. Whether they are racists or merely using race as a political tool, the strategy that they have pursued has succeeded in driving Obama's job approval rating at or above 90 percent among blacks for most of his presidency. That is a mind boggling number, IMO, that suggests something beyond competence is behind it. Especially when one considers how high the unemployment rate is among blacks, and among young black men in particular. The rage toward "Whitey" is misplaced. Residents of cities like Detroit, Chicago, and other "dog whistle" cities should be outraged that the liberal politicians that they have elected for decades and continue to support by astronomical majorities have absolutely failed to deliver on their promises of prosperity. There is hope. Some polls show that Obama's job approval rating has begun to decline and in at least one poll it has dropped all the way down to 78 percent. I am sure that Obama's perpetual campaign advisers are on the lookout for another violent white on black attack.

Second bolded - just may be the single most disappointing thing I have read on BGP.

I am sure that Obama's perpetual campaign advisers are on the lookout for another violent white on black attack. I certainly didn't expect the article to make sense to everyone. Figured a black perspective was worth sharing. I'm sorry you feel it was racist but the discussion has to begin somewhere. I hope Obama's campaign advisors aren't looking for the next violent white on black attack and are hoping some of his policies take shape like they originally hoped. I'm sorry you feel that way. Despite our leader's perception of ineptness I still feel like they mean well. I'm sorry you feel otherwise.
July 27, 201313 yr Author I do find it ironic that for decades blacks have said the government isn't concerned about them and that Reagan purposely funneled crack and guns into the ghetto and set up laws to systematically ruin the black community and now that Obama and his cronies are in office apparently they are now the racist ones out to ruin whitey. Funny how perception changes so quickly.
