I think Nesto, Nick Ruthsatz, and your two bigs are automatic. That 5th spot, in my mind, would be up for much debate. Is / was Todd better than Nick Fredrick? Luke Maile? Does Brian Lewin miss the 10 year window, because if not, he has to be on there.

 

What about Trevor Wellbrock? The kid had a motor.

Not according to the stats.... Sharp had much better overall numbers than Nick did and was no doubt the better player. Numbers never lie.

 

If you don't believe me Sharp was better, ask Coach Carr. He will tell you the truth and I do know what his answer would be.

 

Numbers are nice but not always the whole story. From my perspective Sharp exceeded expectations while Jackson really never lived up to his. He had a good career but after their frosh championship you would have thought he was the next coming.

Going to have to do some research on the individual schools before posting what I'd consider their all-decade teams, but thought it'd be fun to throw this one together since I could probably come up with most of the names off the top of my head (so there's probably some I've left out).

 

 

Lexington-Fayette Public Schools

 

PG - Shelvin Mack - Bryan Station - Career at Butler and time in the NBA speaks for itself in case you forgot about this Defenders standout.

 

SG - Aaron Dunaway – Henry Clay – High scoring wing who could put it in the basket in a variety of ways.

 

SF - Marcellus Barksdale - Tates Creek - Versatile player who could stuff a stat sheet.

 

PF – Aaron Boyd – Henry Clay - Athletic freak who took his talents to the gridiron for UK; a 4* receiver coming out of high school, the scary part is that basketball wasn't his best sport.

 

C - Darnell Dialls - Lafayette - Big man who led Lafayette to state and had a nice career for the Eastern Kentucky Colonels.

 

 

6 - Michael Sparks - Tates Creek - Sharpshooter whose career continued with him launching 3's for VMI's fast-paced offense.

 

 

 

Note: With Jackson Davis, Trey Grundy, Jordan Green, Christen Cunningham, etc. not having graduated yet, they are exempted from this list.

I honestly feel like Nick's expectations were a lot higher then Nate's were. They both were good players. In my opinion I feel Nick was a better ball player.

Duran was a very good player with tons of ability and potential but if you are talking about true PG's and running their team Kellen Smith from Scott was the better player. Led the area in assists for 3 straight years, shattered the all time assist record at Scott and is also in the top 5 in scoring. 3 time district tournament MVP and when you talk to coaches his leadership and his competitiveness were his two best qualities.

 

We can agree to disagree. I am not talking about stats IMO I look for simple intangible things when it comes to PGs in my opinion and that is no disrespect for Kellen as he was one hell of a player. Duran was the glue for all of his Holmes teams that clearly could have brought home a State title had not been for a stronger Scott Co team (with some clear disparity in fouls). To get a full ride in football and a walk-on tryout basketball to UK truly means to me he truly LED his team. He forced his players to raise their game got his team to Rupp which means alot to me. You won't find his name leading alot of statistical categories back then other than wins which mean more to me in my opinion.

 

Again, just a matter of opinions and Kellen's stats should be duely noted.

He's a name that was strongly considered, but probably had a bigger college career because the high school team he played on was so loaded.

 

Also, one that I left out that would probably replace Sparks was Tates Creek shooting guard Justin Taylor.

Turnage was another Henry Clay standout in that era and with Boyd, Moses, and Dunaway (a Mr. Basketball candidate) playing in the same era, there were definitely some tough omissions from the Blue Devils' squads.

 

Those four names and Clay List (a big man from '03) would probably be five who'd have to be strongly considered for the all-decade team from Henry Clay. I know I'm probably omitting the names of some great players in other eras as well (i.e., the Harden kids whose Dad played at UK) during Henry Clay's run of regional championships and would need to go back through some CatsPause and Sweet 16 programs (which unfortunately, I won't be able to do for a few days at least) to really do justice to Henry Clay's lineups.

 

It was actually my hope that doing this list would get some others to chime in with names I'd forgotten and/or maybe should have considered more strongly (which you did).

One school I haven't seen mentioned yet, but would like to see some of the Louisville posters weigh in on would be Ballard.

If he were on a team where he was counted on to score the way Kellen was, he easily averages close to 20 ppg. Teams simply couldn't defend his quickness and strength to go with it.

 

I will say that Kellen probably had a little bit better outside shot. Duran wasn't known for his 3pt shot but had a solid mid range game on in.

Depends on what you want out of your PG, but DJ wasn't exactly team first. He got on his teammates way to much for my liking
