Mike Woolf (sp?) was good, but not top of the list. Ted Edington was good, but again not top. Both could be top of the list of the best "person", but not the best players.

Correct. Adam graduated in '93 and was the QB on the '92 team...which is debatably one of the best teams Cov Cath ever fielded, and pretty undoubtedly the best Cov Cath team to not win the state championship.

 

CCHoldSchool's list is a pretty good one, but McCormack deserves mention before some of them - Todd George and Rick Thompson come to mind. Not to say (at all) that they weren't solid athletes themselves...I just think Adam should be billed above them.

In my opinion, as a CovCath grad and football player in the early 90s, any of these lists/top 3's that don't include Mike Woolf at the top should be tossed. Not only was he the finest player on perhaps the best CovCath team ever, but he was the true "face" of CovCath football for that generation. He was in body, spirit and mind, the prototype of what Lynn Ray and his staff wanted and demanded from all of their rostered players and, perhaps most importantly, he was the single most idolized player by young potential students/players in the feeder schools. Mike not only was the leader and MVP during his junior and senior seasons, BUT he substantially impacted a whole generation of young men who wanted to be Mike Woolf, who wanted to be Colonels, and wanted to win a state title in Park Hills.

 

Some other names of that era that should be included in any discussion of best/most impactful players -- Chad Cogswell, Jude Hoffman, John Kirschner, Rick Woolf, that entire OL (Collins, Hampton, Hanser, McDavid, Belbot, Halloran, Epplen), Jon Schroder, Nate Roedig, and many many more.

 

To my intial point, I would imagine most - if not all - of those listed above idolized Mike Woolf and focused on football/CovCath as a direct result.

Todd George (and Barry Jones) are without a doubt on CovCath's Top 10 list. Linemen don't get a lot of fanfare, but those guys were beasts among their peers. I will never forget the typing class, the knock on the door, and when Mr. Hornsby opened it, Lou Holtz was standing there to talk to Todd. He didn't end up offering, but he was in town to see Frank Jacobs and swung by to see Todd. Todd went on to be a really solid player at UK, and no way are there 10 better past Colonels than that one.

 

Greg Lukey shouldn't be on the list, he was good, really good, but he split carries most of his career with Bobby Schabbell and others.

 

I would also think about adding Dave Legeay over a couple of those listed, who went on to play TE at Vanderbilt. Fantastic football player, and a great dude.

Agree that Barry Jones definitely should be in any top 10 list. He was a massive, athletic, powerful blocker who dominated from day one as a sophomore. He was the best lineman for three years on some of the best teams in CovCath history...and those teams had some other great linemen.

 

I remember being in the weightroom after school one day when John Cooper came to talk to Barry. Never saw Coach Ray move so quickly

David Wilson is a top 10 player.

Wilson graduated in 1991. Three year starter at Safety for Miami (OH). I am a biased classmate, but no one did more, in terms of pure offensive versatility at CCH, than David Wilson. And, he was a heck of a defensive player to boot. IMHO, he is the best all around football player in school history. Or, at least the best all around "skill position" player - and I hate that term because all positions require skill. Fully understanding that the days of the two way player are all but over, not sure we'll ever see another one like him.
