It is the job of the people to keep its government in check. If the government breaks the law do you propose to ignore it. If the library wants to raise taxes put it to a vote and let the people decide.

I don't think "breaking the law" is accurate. There seems to be a gray area here. Some 80 county libraries in the commonwealth tax similarly. What are we going to do -- close half of the libraries in the state because the Tea Party says "Gotcha!" ? Obviously, paying fifty bucks less a year is more important to the Tea Party than fostering literacy. Sad but true.

If the government is breaking the law then yes. They have to play by the rules. Put a levy vote on the ballot and have people agree to the tax increase. I love this term "grey" area. Say that to an IRS auditor when they are auditing you and be prepared to get laughed at. Funny how these "grey" areas seem to always favor the government over its people.

 

When you learn to realize the government has no money its the intended peoples money , and the only way the government gets money is if the people after to it. Maybe then you will understand your surroundings . You have so naive notion that the government is always right .

I've posed at least a dozen questions to you in this thread and you have ignored them all. I'll assume it is because you can't answer them. But I'll ask again. Why are you OK with the government illegally taken money from its citizens. Do you normally promote criminal behavior ?

 

This has nothing to do with the product the tax produces but the tax itself. Law breaking behavior that has good outcomes at the end of the day you are still breaking the law. If people are willing to pay the extra tax put it to a vote and let them decide. I personally wouldn't have a problem paying an extra 50 bucks, but I do have a problem with the government raising taxes improperly to get that money.

You might want to actually read the story linked to in Post 170. For 34 years HB 44 essentially trumped KRS 173.790 when it came to library district taxation. So now we've got a couple of conservative judges siding with the lower-taxes-uber-alles Tea Party morons, and you feel emboldened to start throwing around terms such as "illegal" and "criminal behavior." That type of histrionics no doubt plays well to your pals who are to the right of Torquemada, but not to rational human beings who think that libraries play an important role in a "civilized society."
