Is it possible that if wasn't a HD TV that they couldn't tell?

 

It was obvious on my HD.

 

This does nothing to help Angel's poor reputation.

 

But Clyde, the video that was shown on ESPN sure did not look HD. Granted, they probably blew it up but even then it's clearly out of the park and bounces off the railing.

MLB has issued a statement.

 

MLB executive vice president Joe Torre says the judgment call by umpire Angel Hernandez and his crew "stands as final."

 

Major League Baseball issued a statement nearly two hours after Thursday's first pitch in Cleveland and indicated the call will stand.

 

"By rule, the decision to reverse a call by use of instant replay is at the sole discretion of the crew chief. ... It was a judgment call, and as such, it stands as final," Torre said.

 

"Home and away broadcast feeds are available for all uses of instant replay, and they were available to the crew last night. Given what we saw, we recognize that an improper call was made. Perfection is an impossible standard in any endeavor, but our goal is always to get the calls right. Earlier this morning, we began the process of speaking with the crew to thoroughly review all the circumstances surrounding last night's decision."

 

 

Chipper Jones also let his feelings be known.

 

"Since I can't be fined for ripping umpires anymore, let me take this opportunity to express my displeasure w/ Angel Hernandez. ... Even worse than that, there were 2 other umpires looking at it with him. What the hell were they lookin at?? Musta been "get away day"

 

I agree with Chipper on this. Looks like someone did not want that game to go any longer.

I still have no idea why Angel Hernandez is still employed by the MLB. How can someone that bad constantly still have a job? Its been going on for years.

How would any change in the replay system have caused Angel and the crew to say it was a home run?

Maybe they should have another umpire in the booth or where ever they get to see the replay and he is the one that makes the call.

 

Or you tell me a better way.

have no idea but they were horrible in that game....the ball clearly went over the fence..I don't know if the ball hit the top of the chain link fence and bounced on over or if the ball was caught some how between the chain link fence and the brick wall but they called it a ground rule double instead of a home run...MLB has some really dumb umpires not only in the majors but also in video games as well

First time I've seen the film and it's absurd they didn't call that a HR. No reason MLB can't have an independent review crew at HQ. If MLB is insistent in having reviews they should have top of the line equipment at each park. That review should have taken less than one minute.

You take it out of their hands. Someone who has no immediate tie to the original call, whether that be "upstairs" at the stadium, or back in New York or wherever. I think too often, you can get a crew chief, who made the original call, and can (because of his seniority) bully the rest of the umpires if the call came under review. Take it out of all of their hands.

 

Personally, I like sending it back to a centralized location (ie New York) as opposed to keeping it in the stadium. The reason why? Because there, you can not only have one set of eyes looking at it, but you could have multiple people available for scrutiny.
