Last night during the A's and Indians game, the A's appeared to tie the game on a home run in the 9th inning. The umpires initially ruled it a double but went in to review the call to make sure.

 

 

The video clearly shows it as a home run but the umpires came back out and ruled it a double...Horrible call, clearly with out a doubt a home run. How do you still blow the call when you can go in a look at the video replay?

Agreed. If the A's lose the division by anything less than a full game they should be executed.

I didn't hear a statement from the umpires or even the umpire association but I'd like to in order to hear how they justified this.

 

MLB should respond to it as well.

 

 

Umpires and refs are not held as near accountable as they should be sometimes.

Angel Hernandez, I believe it was him, said that they didn't overturn the call because the TV they were using didn't show with 100% certainty that it was a HR.

 

I say Angel is as bad as they come and should be on the unemployment line.

 

Seriously, this really calls into question the integrity of the game. Do umps have money on games they call? Makes you wonder. No way can they watch the replay and not reverse that call.

Several thoughts...

1.) The review process needs to be taken out of the hands/eyes of the field umps. You need someone going to the tape that doesn't already have an opinion.

2.) Hernandez needs to be talked to about how to handle things post-game. If players are forced to face the media...then umpires should too.

3.) MLB needs to do a better job of critiquing it's umpires. This is not the Supreme Court we're talking about here. Just because you're "in", doesn't mean you're guaranteed a job forever. They need to weed out some of these guys, like Hernandez, that always seem to be at the hub of controversy.

Not surprised to see it was Angel Hernandez. He sucks. And he also has the reputation of being one of the most antagonistic people in the game of baseball. I find it hard to believe that the crew couldn't tell it was a HR based on the replays we have seen. It makes you wonder if they were able to view the same replays. I would be shocked if they didn't. The crew definitely needs to be questioned by MLB, and I think MLB should overrule the call, and pick up the game from that point.

I still can't believe that he is tryin to say there wasn't a clear shot. You can clearly see the ball hit the fence then change direction. No excuse for it.

It wasn't just where it hit. It was also how it reacted after it hit. It was obvious it hit something hard.

Not sure but I'd imagine they don't use sucky televisions or have poor television quality when checking these replays.

 

 

Either way, even from the clip which showed on ESPN you can clearly see, poor quality or not, that it hit above the yellow line.

Clyde, I know you're always one to give umpires/officials the benefit of the doubt, and are an old school baseball fan. Do you feel based on the evidence that MLB should overturn the call, and have the game be replayed from the point of the blown call?

Melvin does not know if the call will be overturned, but expects baseball officials to comment.

While I completely believe they blew the call, both live and again in review...now that the game's finished, I don't see how you can go back and pick it back up from that point. It'd be sort of like the NFL coming back on Monday, saying "you know, that game tying touchdown with 3 minutes left in the game that was ruled no good? Well, guess what, we've determined it IS good. Everybody needs to come back tomorrow and we'll pick it back up there with a tie game." If you're going to correct a call, you need to do it right then and there.
