Obama the President of the poor?

Featured Replies

I blame the republicans. Obama is so awful yet the republicans weren't smart enough to be able to produce a candidate that could beat him. Well done, GOP. Well done. That should show all of you how much the opposing party cares about your complaints about the great Obama.

PurplePride92 I could not get the reply with quote to work, But you are 100% correct with this post. Romney was not the right candidate and the Republicans should have compromised on some issues. They also did a terrible job of communicating their ideas. While I think the Republican positions were best for the country, if you cannot communicate them properly, you will not win.

Try clearing your cache(cookies, data, browsing history) and see if that helps. I had the same problem this morning using the reply with quote function.

Communication is key and that is where the republicans lost this election. As bad as Obama has appeared to have been in a lot of people's eyes to think that he won again is mind boggling. I can't help but think that the republicans didn't want to win. It's much easier to point out the problem than it is to fix it.

Many people believe Obama is the great President for the poor. I believe that is partially true...a lot more of us will be poor before he is done.

And if Mitt Romney had won the election, what would we be doing right now? Gearing up for war with Iran because

GOP administrations don't deal with domestic issues, they redirect the electorate onto national security threats, both real and manufactured!

Folks in this state associate the GOP with conservatism, and they are sorely mistaken!

I don't eat elephant, and they are a protected species :sssh:

Color us insane then because I see just as many generalizations in your post as I made in mine. And, I consider myself independent BTW. I will vote for any candidate who I believe is the best choice for all of American and its future. Clearly, I have stated I do not believe Obama is that person. The last time I felt so strongly negative about a candidate was Jimmy Carter, and I was right. I never felt McCain was a good choice, but I thought Romney was a better choice than Obama. However, the Republican right had too much say in the platform, and I don't agree with much of it, and obviously many voters had the same feeling. But having said that, I would have taken the gamble that Romney would stay in the center socially while I know Obama will stay to the left. I do not believe the liberal policies are in the best interests of the future of this country.

Why do you believe white women are being skipped?

You don't have to answer that, but another generalization...it seems to me that the majority (via the election) of people are all wanting to know what the government is going to do for them. Wasn't it a great Democratic President JFK who said ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country. Where is that thinking nowadays?

BTW, referees DO affect outcomes of games...and they are human and show favoritism sometimes. I will quote Albert E. on this one "unquestioning respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth". We should always be looking for ways to help referees to do a better job. Turning a blind eye isn't it.

I'm a registered Independent and also vote for the candidate I fell is the best for the future of the country as a whole. No way Mr. Romney or the Republican platform represented the best for the country as a whole. Their most-stumped platform was the repeal of AHCA which I wholeheartedly oppose. Never was a plan presented that addressed what they would do if they were successful.

Maybe I do generalize to some degree. But, observation bears out that up to this point, the Republican platform has demonized poverty, while protecting the wealthy. Those in poverty are painted as lazy, shiftless and unwilling to do anything for themselves. Worse, they're painted with a broad brush of uneducated. Call me whatever you like, but the benefactors of the Republican platform are the wealthy. And who, predominantly, control the wealth of the country? White males. Republicans oppose Affirmative Action. They oppose same-sex marriage. They oppose adoptions by gay couples. They oppose social security. They oppose AHCA. They oppose the Earned Income Credit. They oppose Immigration Reform. The oppositions pretty much touches on everyone except the rich, white male.

And, personally, I am skeptical of any strides they make now to embrace Hispanics or any other "minority" group. The Republican establishment is going to extend the olive branch NOT because they truely have any interest of espousing the causes of those groups, but merely to garner votes. What happens after the election (if successful) of a Republican candidate will be status quo.

My tax increase doesn't like the Obama administration. So, I'd say he's Robin Hood.

As for the R's, running a mormon? Not sure that was the right play if you were trying to elicit the evangelical vote. I don't think the R platform will produce a candidate that can keep another Dem out of office as bad as I dislike their policy either way. So, I'm moving to Australia where they don't have any guns, selling all mine to fund the flight.

You are correct.

Your argument boils down to this: "Liberals" are stupid. (And I wonder which of your interlocutors on BGP you would label as stupid.) Instead of reassessing components of the opposition's platform, dealing with the realities of public opinion on some issues, or attempting to change public opinion on certain issues, you're doubling down on what has led to eight years - and quite probably more - of a Democratic White House. You might manage to convince yourselves the majority of the country is shiftless and stupid, but that's not an effective platform.

I have very good friends who are liberal, and I would never call them stupid. However I would debate with them, as we are doing here, the cause and effect of policies - liberal or conservative. Many of us started out poor, but we saw hard work, and education as keys to bettering ourselves. My major concern is that this value and becoming successful is being demonized...to borrow a word. Regarding AA, we shouldn't need it. I hired a woman to manage my business because she is the best person for the job....but I don't want the government telling me who I should hire.

I'd just shut the doors before I let that happen. Stubborn and ignorant maybe, but I agree with you 100%.

I'd rather fight Iran now before they get a nuclear weapon. Under Obama Iran will fully develop a nuclear weapon and threaten Israel until a button is pushed from one side.

I also blame a lot of black and white Christians for our problems with Obama, they should not have voted for someone who supports abortion and homosexuality. Anyone who sends Holiday cards instead of Christmas card is denying God IMO. Why should he care what others think, is he afraid of upsetting non believers, if so he is denying his beliefs. He should let them know up front he is a Christian first and foremost.

Dead on.

4) The black vote was almost 100% for Obama, I can't explain why. Even then, it was pretty close, and the Republicans could have won the election if they had 1) reached out to hispanics; ....

In these two comments are the biggest reason Romney lost and why Republicans need to reinvent themselves. I reply to your numbers:

4) The Republican Party lost the black vote in the civil rights movement in the 60's. Prior to that, the black vote was more evenly divided. Since the 60's and Democrats being on the forefront of civil rights, every Democrat who has run for president has received 90%+ of the black vote. Obama only gained incrementally in the black vote over previous Democrats.

1) By opposing immigration reform, Republicans are repeating history. They are on the cusp of losing the hispanic vote just like they lost the black vote. This is the main reason Obama won - he crushed Romney in the hispanic community and the changing demographics in the country led to Obama's win.

I can't remember the exact numbers but this is close ... if the Republican presidential candidate in 2020 gets the exact same percent of the hispanic vote as McCain did, the Republican will lose in a landslide. The number one issue for Republicans better be immigration reform or we will be looking at Democrat presidents for a long time.

The republicans could have won the election if they had at least tried to get the black vote and disprove beliefs about the Republican Party. They didn't even try. If anything republicans have hurt themselves more in recent years and have even more work to do in the future to get more than 5% of the black vote going forward. Not to mention the tone from republicans and those who despise Obama makes the Republican Party and it's members all just look so petty. I've learned how not to sound when my candidate doesn't win in the future. The whole we're right and you guys are idiots approach the Republican Party has embraced for the last 8 years is annoying and nothing I'd want to get behind. Republicans could be absolutely right about everything that is wrong but the condescending tone turns me off and doesn't allow me to hear, read or understand anything they are saying.

Please don't be so self righteous. There are still Dems that think that Gore won in 2000 and I don't recall an level of civility from them while GWB was in office. I'll echo what you are saying. The reaction of the left to Bush's election in 2000 (including the media) makes me much less likely to listen to what they have to say.

The highlighted part of your post is not accurate. Clinton did not receive 90% of the black vote in either election, doubt that Carter did either. Some of the others may have though, but not all.

And there you have it, folks. Progress.

It's probably better said that in 1992 Bush got 10% of the black vote and in 1996 Dole got 12% of the black vote. Carter got 82% in both elections.
