Mike Flynn Resigns From Highlands

Featured Replies

Jack do you want a coach or a good coach?

Exactly one month after the old coach resigned there is a committee, a list of applicants, and a schedule for interviews. You take out spring break and this is all accomplished in three short weeks.

Constructive criticism? I think I just read that two coaches were there watching 8 guys practice. At least one of those guys is an applicant and may be the next head coach. I think that is covered.

If they didn't have a coach for another month, they could knock the dust off of those weights, do agility drills, and then roll a ball out on the floor for some pick up games and be better off for that.

We are talking open gym in April. Not even talkin bout practice.....

Patience please.

Have you seen this team perform over the last few years? They need to be in the gym now and up until the dead period if they plan on being any better next year. Do not care if it is April or not.

You say there is a list of applicants and a schedule for interviews? Care to share?

Well everyone who has posted info about the process has been wrong to date.

Straight from the horse's mouth tonight: committee meeting for the first time tomorrow (4/11) to discuss applicants, interviews to begin Monday 4/22.

Well I am glad they finally decided to meet and set the interviews 11 days out.

Applicants I have heard that are to be interviewed include Scott Draud, Steve Hunt, Beau Menefee, Erik Goetz, Jim Hicks (Current Bellevue Coach), Josh Feldman (I think and hope), Blevins (Assistant from Cooper), Lykins (Current JV Coach). That is really all I have heard to this point.

The turnout at Open Gym sounds pretty weak, I guess I should tell Red Dog to stop in and run some so they can scrimmage 5 on 5 atleast. I do know several kids play spring sports and BB Buten is out with the shoulder injury until May/June. There is a solid core of kids coming back that can help the program but I am hearing that 2 key players will not be back.

The new coach definitely needs to be talking to these two kids. Feggins and True are the rumored two I heard and both are huge football guys. Feggins started a few games early in the season and then was relegated to JV and hardly came off the bench late in the season. I am not sure what Coach Flynn's plan was with him. Nick is a much needed force in the paint and really started to play better toward the end of the season. He was much more aggressive and really did a great job rebounding the ball on the defensive end. He obviously got better later in the year because of the amount of reps he was getting. If these guys would play in the offseason and not wait unitl the first game of the year to pick up a ball I think you would see better success.

There is my two cents.

Seems like an interesting pool of applicants. Thanks for the update!

1) they will never interview that many coaches

2) tonight they will pick who they will interview

This is from the info given by the other poster. I find it hard to believe they will interview more than 5 applicants.

Agreed. Is your friend getting an interview?

For those of use that are not tight with the athletic department, which of these names of prospective candidates served as assistant coaches last year?

Don't know. Haven't talked to him since spring break.

Steve Hunt was the Varsity Assistant

T.J. Lykins was the JV Coach

Beau Menefee was the frosh coach

Don't know. Haven't talked to him since spring break.

Hopefully he gets one, sounds like a worthy candidate. Would need to get in there and sell his program.

What teaching positions outside of Spanish will be open next yr at Highlands, that may be the better question atleast When considering bringing in an outsider. Draud teaches English I believe. Not sure what the other guys teach. Feldman is already in the school system and very well liked with a gregarious personality.

Draud pulled his name out.

Do not know about the Spanish position, but do know that there is a Biology position open according to the school's website. Why does there have to be a teaching position open for the next coach? Mike Flynn was not a teacher in the building.

At the high school Spanish and Biology. Math at the middle school. Feldman is good with the kids and I know my Son thinks highly of him.

Good choice on his part IMO. I know there are several kids currently in the program that would have walked away had he been hired.
