I noticed two of the cheers they shouted:

 

1. In the 4th quarter when Highlands made a FT to get their 10th point, the cheer was "DOUBLE DIGITS".

2. After the "running clock" had started and NewCath with the ball they cheered "next points win". Newcath scores and they erupt.

 

I actually felt bad for the basketball players, not good when your peers are laughing at your expense.

Congrats to NCC on the win. It sounds like the Highlands players are in a tough spot, especially if their own fans are jeering and/or ridiculing them in the stands. I hope things turn around for the team as the season moves forward.

It doesn't bother me. I just know that when I was at NewCath the Highlands game was packed. If we were getting killed, or killing Highlands, you wouldn't see either side sarcastically cheering on their team. They'd be inappropriate to the other side, but not come down on their team. It just suprised me.

 

 

WOW! I am shocked. I wish I would have known this before I spouted off before. I am totally embarrassed for these actions as my son was in attendance in the student section. I can't apologize for him, he needs to do that himself if he was involved, but I can for myself.

 

To Q, JOAT, Stinky, and anyone else that is part of the basketball program, I apologize for my comments in my post before. These cheers were totally unacceptable and should have been stopped by the Administration. No player deserves that kind of treatment especially from your classmates. High school kids should know better. Hopefully this never happens again.

In all honesty I don't think the cheers were meant as a put-down to the team, just a bad choice of sarcasm.

 

By the way, Dale was front an center last night.

Dale Mueller and Brian Robinson were there the whole game. I just hope they were paying attention and noticed how embarrassing this game was. I really felt bad for the kids.

 

The kids played hard and they might be over matched but there is no way the NNC guys are 40 points better than the HHS kids. It will be interesting to see over the next couple of weeks if the kids dial it in or if they come out fighting. My guess is the feeling of hitting bottom they might relax and start hitting some shots. I have to had it to NCC, they played very well last night.

 

Actually the students have showed up more this year than they did last year.

WHO said they didnt play hard? Bottom line is When you lose your team you struggle to get that expected effort. They are teenagers, not adults who Look at it from a different perspective.

 

I tell my son to forget about it and get a short Memory, his response was " Kind of hard to forget something like that."

 

I guess we will see how this plays out.

 

I wasn't there but we have to remember that the kids playing are 15-17 years old and the students attending the game are the same age.

 

Making good decisions isn't always one of their best attributes.

 

Despite the debacle on the floor and in the stands, the Birds have to get back on the horse tomorrow night. Let's hope they can.

I think I must have made LawnBoy mad because I no longer get his game update text......My wife even asked me about it last night when she saw the Breds and Birds were playing in the paper. She said " hey did that guy you know text you the score" All I could say was nope! Whats up LB?????

Do you think actually having a head coach in the building would have any impact on the program? They would then be able to interact with the student body on a daily basis.

After the game last night, my son and I talked a long time about the JV and varsity games. We discussed certain plays and situations, we talked about how each team tried to attack the other, why NCC was so successful and why HHS was so unsuccessful. To say he was disappointed in the outcomes of both games is an understatement. Frustrated and a little embarrassed. The one topic that never came up and has not come up still is anything to do with the student section. I think adults get more upset over these things than the kids do.

Wow - it is hard for me to admit, but I do feel for the Highlands players. That is really sad that their peers, classmates, etc who they I am sure cheered for when they won the state title in football - jeered them. I can only imagine how my son would feel if that happened, or how I would feel as a parent if I witnessed this. I do have one question though - Were there any Highlands administrators present? Did they say something to the students? I would certainly hope that they would recognize the pain this caused and tried to put a stop to it as quickly as possible. Doesn't sound like that happened so I am assuming there were none present.

 

If I didn't know the make-up of the HHS basketball team, I might be led to believe this was the case.

 

4 of the 5 starters last night for HHS are football players. The first 2 subs are football players. That's 6 of 7. Not just members of the football team, but key parts of the state championship football team. The kids in the stands are their teammates. Maybe the kids in the stands were just as frustrated as the kids were on the court and the resulting sarcasm was the end result.

For anyone who has coached. We've all been on the wrong end of a score like this before. More than once. I'm not sure there is anything Coach Flynn could have done to stop this from happening.
