Next Boone County Head Coach

Featured Replies

When did Boston play for him?

Every year after the season we would play in tournaments mostly in Lousiville at the Rumble on the River tournament. There was a core group of players that would go on this select team each and every year from 2005-2009. These players played with him every year he took a team down there and most of them played in tournaments he coached since 3rd grade

Casey Boston (Boone Co.)

Corey Fussinger (Cooper)

Lex Sowards (Ryle)

Will Ludwig (Cooper)

Dustin Baker (Conner)

Others that would also play in the later years with these kids were the likes of Luke Bir (Cov Cath) Christian Stewart (Cov Cath) Christian Olmstead (SK) Jalen Beal (Holy Cross)

just to name a few, it was at least 4 straight years and then also on the Boone Co. Allstar team vs Campbell/Kenton

Gotcha, I was not thinking about kids he coached in All-Star games.

I guess it's just the football world we live in, where offense just catches peoples eyes more, but defense is what wins. Always has. Always will. Stopping the run. Winning the turnover battles. Keeping people out of the endzone. On offense, I don't care how you do it, you have to be able to run the ball. Period. At the same time, you also have to be able to throw it when the run just isn't there. But going back and looking at Boone County's records the last 6 years, one thing clearly stands out: when they have been good defensively, so has their season.

Since 2007:

- their 3 worst seasons were years when they gave up 33 game ('12, 33 given up..1-10; '10, 32 given up..3-7; '09, 35 given up..4-7)

-their 3 best seasons they gave up an average of 16 pts/game ('11, 15 given up..9-5; '08, 14 given up..9-4; '07, 22 given up..10-4)

***that's just a shade over TWICE as many points given up. That's what makes a difference in winning and losing***

However, in each of those 3 best seasons, Boone also threw for over 1,000 yds ('07 team stats weren't reported as far as rushing and passing). They also rushed for some of the highest in that 6 year stretch as well.

I don't have a dog in this fight. As a matter of fact, I'm about as far removed from the Boone County program as anyone on this site, but I just get so frustrated with the "offense, offense, offense...let's see if we can run 100 plays (snaps) in a game" philosophy thinking is the key to success

What amazes me even more is the ridiculous idea that just because the QB gets in the shotgun, all the sudden it's a new "offense".

Take Oklahoma State for example. The last 2-3 years, they were really the first to go in the gun and have 3 backs in the backfield (commonly known as the "Diamond" formation"). Well, in reality...guess what that is? It's the inverted wishbone. But, had Gundy called it that and/or gotten under center, it wouldn't have been as "cool".

I just don't get it...sorry for the rant.

You can stop using players as a measuring stick of a coach. You would be insane to think most of those players developed on behalf of Matteoli. I'm not knocking his coaching ability by any means. I am truthfully unaware of what he has done and it sounds like he has had tremendous talent and he didnt lose with it. It does take a good coach to accomplish that. If he wishes to apply for the BC job, that is wonderful news. However, I hope 2 superbowl championships with high caliber athletes does not top his resume. BTW, he had the #1 pitcher in the history of fast pitch softball at his dispense when he coached for Ryle.

The people posting are the same people who complain about professional sports...offense puts butts in seats. But i agree with you, those Boone teams were known for their "O" w/ Farris and co. But it is clear that defense had more of an impact on the success of those seasons. But Boone fans would say, "but only if we threw the ball more, we would have beaten Trinity..." And that argument is going all the way back to 1987.

Gotcha, I was not thinking about kids he coached in All-Star games.

Now most of those players he had coached as their football coach on their teams. Casey and Olmstead are the only one's i mentioned that he didn't coach on their regular team during the season. The others he coached on their regular team.

The players I listed learned a ton from him, and his success had less to do with getting great players than his ability to coach those players and get the best out of them.

You seem to lose focus on the fact that his first SB win was with a team that he took over that hadn't won more than 2 games in the prior years. His first year with them he turned them around (with the same players) and they won the SB. Yes those players I named are great HS players, but the fact that he had a lot to do with their success at the HS level seems to be lost.

Yes having great players makes a big difference, but I ask you what have the teams that had those same players before he got them do? The answer is nothing. They weren't successful, so you can claim the reason he was so successful was because of the players he had but you can't explain that why the teams that had those same players before he took over weren't successful at all.

Coaching has a lot more to do with the success of a team than the allstar athletes the team may have.

Now with all that said, don't get me wrong, I am not on Bill Matteoli's payroll lol. There are 2 other coaches that would be great for BC but I'm not speaking their names here because I'm selfish and they are already in my schools coaching system and don't want to give them any ideas because I want them staying where they are at.

Just having fun with Bill. He is one of my favorites from the league.

Stats don't always really tell the story. The years Boone gave up less points they might of been having longer time of possessions causing the point total to go down. They could of been scoring more points forcing other teams to get out of their normal offense sooner. Other teams could of been down those years. There is also the talent swing.

Scoring 1 more point than your opponent wins games. How you go about that could be any number of ways.

Any thoughts on Siple? Grant County isn't nearly close to the traditional program Boone is... I could see him making that move...

I guess there is always a chance he would apply. To some degree it would make sense to apply. There is no real downside to doing it.

Someone mentioned Davis. I wouldn't be surprised if he applied.

As far as either one of them getting the job I have no idea. It depends on what Boone is looking for

With their offense, long drives, ball control was part of it..absolutely. But, here is guessing they just had better defenses that year, too.

Scoring one more point is all that matters, but the game hasn't changed as much as people think it has. The same things that won the vast majority of games 50 years ago are the same things that win it now. I addressed them in my original post, so not going to repeat.

It's a simple game. Really is. But, for some reason we are in a time and period where a lot of teams are more worried about the "fashion" of the game instead of the ultimate result, which is to win (as you well know).

Bill is a solid coach but so is Bob Napier. I don't know how much desire Bill would have at this point.

Woolf has a son at Ryle on Varsity that's not likely.

I think they need an outsider to maximize the potential of the athletes in Florence, instead of a power run scheme.

In Smitty I trust he lives and breaths Boone he will get the right guy.
