I agree about tbe "fashion" part of it. Honestly part of that is people wanting the local hs to look like the teams on Saturday and Sunday. There is pressure for that from clueless people. Then you have some coaches that try to be like that. Or coaches that think they can out scheme the other team.

 

When it comes down to it you have to block and tackle better than those other guys. You have to execute your system to the highest level you can. That of course goes to not making mistakes.

 

The game is pretty simple and there are a lot different ways to skin that cat.

Bill is a solid coach but so is Bob Napier. I don't know how much desire Bill would have at this point.

 

Woolf has a son at Ryle on Varsity that's not likely.

 

I think they need an outsider to maximize the potential of the athletes in Florence, instead of a power run scheme.

 

In Smitty I trust he lives and breaths Boone he will get the right guy.

Yes I enjoy both of those teams very much. I didn't get a chance to watch Northwestern this year. I enjoy watching well coached teams running well constructed schemes.

 

Some of the teams I enjoy are WVU, aTm, Wisconsin, Boisie St back in the day, Clemson, AL, Georgia Tech, Army, Navy, Vandy, Malzahn coached teams, UCLA, Georgetown College, Trinity (big Coverdale fan), Rich Rod teams, Leach, Tom Osborne Nebraska, and Urban Meyer teams to name a few.

 

I'm just as happy watching a well run double wing offense as I am a triple option, or spread if they are coached well.

Historically Boone County has been run run run. Over the years they have never consistently thrown the ball well and frankly they haven't always defended the pass well either. Just because I think they need someone offensive minded (again with a proven track record) that is also well schooled in developing QBs doesn't mean Boone shouldn't have a balanced attack or somehow offense is more important than defense.

There are ways to develope QB and the passing game even if you're not the best QB coach. Darin Slack is an amazing resource for that. It also comes down to what you ask the qb to do.

 

Balance is either an over used or misused word in football. You can win going to the extremes but you have to have answers. A double wing team just needs the qb to understand and execute the passing game on a level to hurt a defense. That is just one example.

I think that is a possibility but I think much tougher to do (and keep in place) than finding a quality offensive coach that then possibly hires Coach N as his assistant.

Same here. Except I can't handle the just trying to outscore people method. You know what I mean, every week 58-47.

 

I still think there is something to be said about playing solid defense. I like watching LSU and Bama from a defensive standpoint as I do watching any offense. I'm a fan of many of those you spoke of above, too.

Speaking of "balance". Have you ever read Mike Leach's book, "Swing Your Sword" and/or heard him give his definition of balance?

 

If so, disregard this, but if not, he basically says his version of "balance" is getting the ball to his playmakers. Trying to incorporate as many guys touching the ball as possible. In short, "balance" to him is old school Wishbone Triple Option (when all four guys in the backfield were a threat to touch the ball) and rarely throwing it or his version of the spread where they rarely run it, at least run it very well (yet utilizing all 4 and 5 wide). He hates "balance" being teams that run/pass 50-50.

 

I'm not sure where I stand on that to be honest, somewhere in the middle, I guess?

Whoever they hire, they have a great opportunity to make BC a very good program again. It will be interesting to see which direction they go.

Leach tracks touches. He wants the ball spread around. He does run the ball and produces 1000 yd rushers. He even talks about the rb being his best player in many ways. That's what I refered to the misconception of balance.

 

Over the years look at Trinity's passing and rushing numbers. They have fairly equal numbers but if you break it down by quarter and game you see they tend to throw early and run late.

 

Boone has talent. With a coach with a system and plan they can be a strong program ( I'm not knocking the former staff). It will be interesting to see who the next coach will be.

In '08, his best year there when they knocked of Texas on Halloween, they rushed for more yards than any of his seasons there I think.

Word on the street is the phones are ringing off their hooks with applicants from both sides of the river and from all over the state. Co-ordinators from high profile programs and current head coaches from successful programs are lining up to apply. The Powers at be have a challenging yet exciting decision ahead of them.
