Officers have formal law enforcement authority, including the authority to arrest individuals, on property owned or controlled by the University and on streets running through and adjacent to the campus. They are also empowered to conduct investigations anywhere in the Commonwealth of Kentucky for crimes originating on campus. Pursuant to KRS 164.955, the Murray State Police has entered into a Jurisdictional Agreement with the Sheriff of Calloway County, Kentucky and the City of Murray Police Department whereby the Murray State Police jurisdiction is established to the extent of the county lines of Calloway County , Kentucky . The Murray State Police investigates all reports of crime on campus and, therefore, does not have a written Memorandum of Understanding with any local law enforcement agency for the investigation of certain crimes on campus.

 

Am I reading it right to think that would mean that the MSU police have jusidiction all over Calloway County?

Let me just say this: I haven't seen the video, but it sounds like the kid baited the cop & hooked him. I wish i could say that im surprised the cop fell for it, but quite frankly I'm not.

 

I have seen them abuse their power far too many times.

The title right there should tell you that there is a bigger problem than this 1 dorm room search.....Very Sad!

Well I watched it. I know the other officer and he's a good guy and very intelligent. The student is a piece of garbage. Hope he gets what he's got coming to him, which is expulsion from the university. His parents must be proud.

The kid wanted this confrontation. He set it up to record the whole thing. Cost a man his job. While the university may not be proud of the way their officer acted, can we all agree that they should be even less proud of how their student acted?

 

I'm not giving the kid respect or credit, but the man cost himself his job. The kid just caught it all on tape. The cop lost his cool, didn't follow protocol and overstepped his authority. That is why he doesn't have a job today.

 

As for the kid, he's going to have a huge target on his back the rest of the time he's in Lexington.

Expulsion for what? Using poor language directed to a police officer? Kid stood up for his rights, in a disrescpectful way, but that isn't punishable by expulsion.

Not arguing with you there at all. The kid is definitely a punk. But at the end of the day, you just said it. The cop made a mistake and his consequence for that mistake was the loss of his job.

I do want to point out that we don't know what happened before the video was being recorded. Some have talked about the liquor possibly being poured out his window, which is why the cops were there. But I wanted to paint a hypothetical picture of what my have happened pre-recording.

 

The kid is drinking in his room and a Residential Assistant is called to his room for whatever reason (I'd guess maybe has his music way too loud during Finals Week or late at night so someone complained). The RA comes to the door and has a little discussion/confrontation with the kid. When the RA smells or believes that there is alcohol in the room, the RA then calls their Hall Director and/or Campus Police and waits outside the door for the them. While the RA waits, the door is closed, and the kid proceeds to poor and get rid of the alcohol in his room by throwing it out the window. Another RA or someone sees this. The kid knows that it's about to go down, sets up his webcam, baits the police officers, and now has a pretty decent case for them abusing their authority.

 

I obviously have zero idea if that happened. But I'm trying to picture how it was probably handled and what happened pre-recording to help paint a picture of what none of us know. My description is from knowing how RA's are suppose to do their job from working in University Housing at NKU, as well as seeing these type of searches happen before on a campus.

I'm sure there is a code of conduct for students at UK. Maybe pouring liquor out your window violates it. Maybe his behavior towards the cops violates it. I don't know. I'd like to think if a student goes around campus talking to university employees like that, that they could remove him from the school. I don't think UK would like this clown representing to the school.

It's a good question. Maybe if it was in the middle of the Student Union, but I think they will receive much worse PR and media attention should the kid be expelled for the disrespectful language in a non-puplic setting.

I'd say it's a good chance he did it since they are at his room.

 

As for the second part, is it acceptable for a student to speak like that to random members of faculty in restrooms or hallways of dorms even it's just the two of them present? Would it be acceptable if this was his RA and RD instead of cops? Or is it ok cause they are cops and that's what should be expected from college kids to Cops?

I find it interesting that courts give dorms the same level of privacy protection as apartments. I believe that it should be somewhere in the middle ground, b/n being able to search lockers at high schools and the need for a warrant or the exceptions in an apartment. Public University officials have a greater responsibility to the community than does a Landlord. I would believe that scheduled room searches would be very reasonable if it is indiscriminate and with the idea of protecting the welfare of the other students of the University. I can not say that at any point of living in a dorm room did I feel that I had as much privacy as I did in an apartment or my house. You are on University property w/ University rules of behavior. I don't believe that you should be able to go in at any time. Here, there weren't really any exigent circumstances. The bottles had already been dumped. All they had to do was station an officer w/in eyesite of this kids room to ensure that, if, he were disposing of anything else that it was witnessed by the officer. That would be done as the other officer knocked on the student's door. Now you can ask for a warrant and not worry about the student disposing of any more alcohol out of his window.

Let me also add, if you are a Campus Cop, you know what you are getting into. You have to have extra thick skin. You will be dealing w/ all types of punks. Some come from spoiled backgrounds, some come from rough backgrounds. Some have been pumped full of ideas in poli-sci classes, and other begin to find their righteous (and pompous) selves. That is the name of the game. You can not lose your cool when a kid acts like a turd verbally.
