The 4th amendment. Similar situations to what occurred on video but in houses around campus. I live around all college houses. They stroll around on their bikes and walk intp houses that they think they can write up a few citations for the city. My roommates and I are all 21 or 22 years old and if we're drinking inside with music on they'll help themselves to the front door. They'll stroll right on in and tell you to keep it down when they realize there's nothing illegal going on. That's completely a violation. It happens whether you guys can believe it or not. It sounds ridiculous and I've never seen anything like it until I started living in Lexington. I'm not accusing every cop in the world of violating rights. I believe a small percentage have ever violated rights even once. But the majority, and I say majority with confidence, of the officers on UKs campus don't care about rights around college kids. We witnessed it in this video. The officer simply didnt care about rights at that point.

Maybe they didn't live in the same area as I do, I'm not sure. This was in the dorms, it's different than the bike cops inviting themselves into houses. And like I said, it doesn't happen EVERY time, but it happens often.

And weren't they allowed to enter the room according to the school? I thought they could enter, but they could not search anything. I don't really remember where I read that so I could be wrong.

I still disagree with your assessment of the "majority" of UKPD. I think the biggest problem is you don't feel rules apply to you or your friends. Seems like most of your complaints reference drinking and music. There's 2 sides to all stories. I'd say it's possible the music may be too loud (most cities have ordinances in regards to loud music). While yes, you have the right to listen to music and binge drink till you puke, others have the right to peace and quiet in their homes. Maybe you were and maybe you weren't in violation of some kind of ordinance. Also, while underage drinking is generally prevalent on most campuses, perhaps you or your friends have less room for error based upon your prior incidents and/or attitudes regarding similar matters? Just my 2 cents, but citizens who are respectful tend to get the same treatment in return.

I know all of my neighbors....all of them. 3 houses down both ways and the 3 across the street. Not a chance. All of your points are assumptions. Be skeptical all you want but I witness the stuff. If you patrol in a county where not a lot of this stuff happens, you should be surprised. They're bike cops. They look for people and listen for music. It's the way they patrol the streets. If they relied on only complaints the city wouldn't make close to as much money as they do. You don't have to accept or believe it, and I don't really care if you do or not. But it happens. The last set of cops that came to our house walked up to a couple people smoking a cigarette on the front porch and one of the cops on his bike said to another "Uh, there's no one here." They know they're out to bust large parties and write citations. They rarely go to a house because of a complaint. Stay in your little police officer fantasy land, where you believe every cop is righteous and goes by the book. It's just not how it is on campus. It's about time a cop lost his job, maybe they'll realize they need to be a little more respectful of everyone, felon or scholar, old man or 19 year old. if you don't give the respect that people deserve, you end up on youtube getting fired. Just sucks that that kid was a punk. I'd feel more comfortable rooting for him.

You suffer from what this kid suffers from and that's the mentality that "I'm in college so that means I'm smart and definitely smarter than some stupid cop." A lot of officers have at the least an associates degree, a lot have bachelors degrees, and I know plenty with masters or who are working on their masters. I used to be a good dude? I assure you I'm a far better person now than I ever was before. I hold myself to a higher standard and am always aware the public is watching, hoping and praying I mess up. You call it condescending or smug, I call it keeping cool and not allowing myself to get caught up in the moment. Why give someone what they want by getting mad? You ever heard of kill em with kindness? You don't dislike the guy who makes a living enforcing laws, hell you don't even know him or where he comes from or his personal feelings on laws he enforces. You hate his uniform.

 

Best thing any officer can do is keep calm and not take stuff personal. They don't hate you, they hate what you represent. Best of luck with the rest of your nursing school.
