Hefty Lefty. All American in H.S. and College. He played professionally and won a Super Bowl. Also, the best basketball player of them as well. Towles was second but Gino billing on his heels and then Matt Mason. Maybe McCoy passes him next year.

 

Actually, I believe Chuck Kyle is the only All American Highlands has had. He played on the '64 team I think.

Now that is funny! To show how much has changed, HHS was 9-1 Butch's senior year...and DID NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!!! How crazy does that sound now when 1-9 teams make the playoffs!

 

I can attest to the above. HHS lost to Newport. 3A had sub-divisions at the time due to so many teams being in 3A. Newport was #1 in the state heading into the playoffs.

What about Kevin Siple, Dennis Stafford, Butch Stafford, Jim Abner, Jeff Kremer, Bob Burkart? These were some excellent players back in the day.

 

It is such a different game today that it makes it tough to compare across eras.

I would say it would be close between Jared and Gino. Towles was awesome but the other two were just above everything else to me.

 

(Personal peeve: Jared was ON the Giants team and has a Super Bowl ring but to say he was a factor on that win is not totally accurate IMO. It's something to be proud of but isn't a part of the discussion at hand IMO. Jacob Tamme played in a Super Bowl on special teams and even has a tackle but I wouldn't cite it in measuring his worth as a receiver in a debate)

Towles was a Parade All American last year. Not sure if Lorenzen ever was, but I think both Grover and Rob Smith were on All American teams as well. Those two and Collinsworth were Army All Americans.

I met Jared's Dad last year. We bought a new 5-Axis Mazak mill and he got it ready for us. Enjoyed the talk about football.

Highlands has won many Championships. I am NOT a expert to say the least about Bluebird football. To say who is best is very hard. From my standpoint, age included, I would have to list the top 5:

If Jim Abner played in today's offenses, he would have lit up the scoreboard as well. He could really sling it back in the day of the three yards and a cloud of dust offense.

Lorenzen was a first team freshmen all American at UK in the SEC. he was all conference two times.

Any QB who led the Birds to a State Title deserves to be in the conversation. With that in mind, I nominate Dr. Bert Bathiany and "Touchdown" Tommy Roberts!
