When the ball was caught on the 4, the receiver slipped and fell. I think he had outside chance maybe to get to the sideline with time still left. The pass evidently was to the receiver behind him in the front corner of the end zone but it was tipped and floated to him. His reaction o course to catch the ball. I can't blame him too much. Exciting game. Those Bama backs run hard.

Bama went really imposed their will on the Dogs. That was some classic power running by Yeldon and Lacy. I really thought they would lose after the blocked field goal.

Lacy was a Boss in this game...for that matter so was Yeldon...what a performance.

I thought that Alabama's defense was way too passive on UGA's last drive, lucky that it didn't cost them the game.

Has anyone else noticed that UGA just cannot win the SEC title game? Richt has done a great job down there, but they just seem to never get over that "hump" that would make them an elite program. UGA is always good for 8-10 wins a year, I just want to see them make it to NC. Been a long time since Herschel was there.

And in 2002 Georgia finished 3rd in the rankings. They were slightly unfortunate that two teams finished undefeated ahead of them in Ohio State and Miami. Think of how many times that year Ohio State should have lost.

My point is LSU, UF, and Bama have all been in the NC game at least twice since 2000. I feel that UGA has had teams good enough to get there, but just can't.

I would argue Georgia had three. 2002, 2004, and 2008. In 2002 they lost to Florida by a TD and that was enough to keep them out. In all likelihood, they wouldn't have played for the title anyway as they were never ranked higher than Miami and Ohio State passed them after the first game played, well before their loss. In 2004 Georgia lost twice, to Tennessee and to undefeated Auburn (AKA the last undefeated SEC champion that would ever be kept out of the title game). Tennessee only lost three times, and two of them were also to Auburn. These weren't bad teams is what I'm saying. 2008 is where the true failure was if you could call it that. That's the one that started the year as preseason #1 with Matt Stafford. They lost to Alabama (who went undefeated until falling to Florida in the SEC Championship), Florida (who won the national championship), and a ranked Georgia Tech team. But they underachieved compared to their expectations.

 

I understand what you're saying, but I look at it like this - the three teams you named and especially the latter two were pretty much the class of college football in the last 10 years. Were any of the Georgia teams in that span what you would rate as better than them?

I can't recall years, just the players that were there. The year they had Moreno and Stafford, that was a let down. This year, I felt like they were in prime position to FINALLY win and make it. Hard to fathom that it has been 30+ years since they played in the NC game. Also, UGA ranks third in all-time bowl wins, that stat really shocked me.

 

Basically, I'm saying their are a "great" football program, but they easily could be an "elite" program, just haven't performed as such.

I been saying this years Notre Dame team has been doing things a lot like that 2002 Ohio State team. Not really making anything that pretty, but always coming up with ways to win games. Then they go beat a loaded Miami team, that everyone thought would win unless you were a Ohio State fan. This Notre Dame/Bama game is shaping up to be the same way. With hopefully the team no one thinks will win in Notre Dame ends up shocking people and winning.
