The Death of Twinkies

Featured Replies

Hostess Brands, makers of the item that has a longer shelf life than anything else, has suspended operations.

No Twinkies. No Ding Dongs, no Wonder Bread once the current supply is gone.

You can kill the company but you can't make the Twinkies expire!

Think that another company will be the rights (whatever it is) to produce these products? I feel like someone will want too.

Some moments are always etched in to our mind as to where we were when the news broke. This is one of those moments.

So...the company is failing and offers to cut workers wages by 8% in the first year of a five-year deal, and then to bump them back up by 3% in the next three years, and 1% in the final year as the company (assumedly) recovers. The bakers' union decides they want higher wages, strike, and force them out of business. Genius work, bakers' union: "Our company is failing...let's stop working and demand more money". Gotta love that attitude.

Well played Baker's Union.

I honestly don't know a whole lot about this but at first glance it certainly looks like they cut off their unionized noses to spite their collective faces.

On a side note the leagilize pot crowd is paniced due to the impending shortage of munchies.

Union parasites killing their host organism. Brilliant.

Well there's certainly the potential that the host organism wasn't healthy on its own accord...but the union certainly didn't do anything productive by their actions. (Unless striking their way out of a job is what you'd call productive.)

20K jobs lost right before Christmas. That's great PR for the union.

I wonder if the Union had access to the financials, or if they considered it a bluff. Either way, there has to be give and take, and unions are currently in the TAKE stage. The pendulum has swung. Maybe Union heads will start to look at all of the outsourcing and understand that it is due to lower costs. They can't be completely competitive w/ many of the wages that foreign workers receive, but they can't go crazy either.

Someone will buy these rights pretty quickly, we will have Twinkies!!!

That said this is horrible that this many families are effected.

What if Kroger, Walmart or some other retailer bought these rights and the only place you could get these items were from them?

McKee Baking (Little Debbie) could pretty seamlessly pick up the lines. Distribution already in place and they are a company flush with cash.

I would rather the Unions and Hostess sit down TODAY and work this out and get these people back to work.

According to the article I read this morning, it's too late to work it out.

"The industry has overcapacity. We're overcapacity. Our rivals are overcapacity," said Rayburn in an interview on CNBC. Asked if the shutdown decision could be reversed if the Bakers' union agreed to immediately return to work, he responded, "Too late."

I thought they said last week that they were only closing a few plants? Cincinnati, St. Louis and Seattle? I heard that the Teamsters were upset at the Baker's Union, as their members accepted the new terms, they were also upset that the other union would not call for a private ballot Vs a show of hands.

Someone will buy most of these brands.

Haven't had any of their products in many years but I sure hate to see this happen. I'm sure we'll see someone take up the production.
