Could someone please explain to me this "voter suppression" that is happening.

Featured Replies

I'm sorry, all I have heard today on MSNBC is all about how you are being stopped from voting and that all this voter suppression is happening because of the Republicans. Could someone please explain this to me. I am going to wake up tomorrow and vote just like I have voted for the last 34 years. No one is stopping me just like no one has stopped me for the last 34 years. It really isn't that difficult. :idunno:

MSNBC. nuff said.

I know, but I'm all up in the election watching every channnel and listening to every radio station and my family hates me right now and I have all these questions and BGP's is the only place I can ask them and get an answer.

Ok, I'm having a hard time understanding how people believe some of this stuff. Does anyone really know the background of the Obamas?

The beef isn't that voters in Ft. Thomas (... or West Chester, Indian Hills, Batavia, Lebanon, Monroe, Chillicothe) will be kept from voting. The powers that be make sure voters in more affluent areas are able to cast a ballot with a reasonable wait and minimal interference at the polls.

By contrast, precincts in urban areas (Cleveland and Cincinnati, throughout Florida's big cities) are plagued with outrageously long lines and poll watchers (not precinct officials) demanding that voters show credentials. The argument is that election officials purposefully create (allow) impediments in poor and ethnic precincts to deter folks from voting.

I am bringing my 87 year old mother with me tomorrow to vote in a Villa Hills precinct. She loves to vote. Had her hair done. Will spend all morning telling me about F.D.R. If she had to wait 2 or 3 hours, we would have to leave long before she got to cast her vote.

The issue is that laws have been created to fix a problem that is a myth. It doesn't impact Edgewood or Ft Thomas. Instead of making voting easier we have some states whose legislation saw a groundswell of "get out the vote" and early voting that they believe helped candidate Obama win the election.

I've detailed it many times on here as to changes to laws that impact mainly students, blacks, Latinos - all groups that lean left.

There is no excuse to have people waiting in line for 5 hours to vote.

Have never waited in any line in all my 34 years.

Walk right in , show my ID , and vote.

Neither have I but I have never lived in a predominately black neighborhood so nobody cares to suppress my vote since I am outnumbered when I step into the precinct.

Since you have never expirenced it , you know this how?

Not an issue in affluent, largely Caucasian Fort Thomas.

A huge issue in Miami, Philadelphia, etc.

There's a reason why pretty much all of the "reduce early voting opportunities/implement voter ID initiatives" occur in states with Republican-dominated legislatures and Secretaries of State. And it ain't voter fraud.

As I mentioned in a related thread, last year was the first time that non-white live births outnumbered Caucasian live births in the U.S. It will be instructive to see how these voter suppression programs develop over the next 4 or 5 election cycles.

I love when people assume that what happens in their little slice of the world is what must be the norm everywhere.

And then skip over all the explanations they asked for and challenge the one person who didn't offer an explanation.

Since I am black I try to keep a pulse on what is going on in the black community. Right now voter suppression is a real fear.

I agree. I didn't know much about the issue until I read about it on here. It is concerning that this is done.

Or just turn on the TV and see the 7 hour long lines, and the fact that states like Florida cut the days for early voting from 14 days to about half. Ohio has cut their hours as well. Not too many people can wait in line for 7 hours.

Agreed.
