I thought Keith Salter coached that team?

Keith has a second 4th grade team. Derek and I coach a third grade only gametime team that has had a very good first season only losses to an established Shannon Minor Viking team. IMO will have some very strong 4th and 3rd grade classes coming through in multiple sports.

Look-out next year! I have one in preschool who trains once a week with Chris Mack!

One other thing I see in AAU that has very little value in developing the player is a 5 up zone press or really all zone presses. It definitely wins you some games. I do it too sometimes against my better judgement. It's very effective because few kids are capable of throwing over it. However, it doesn't teach the kids to guard and just mucks up the game. You're really not helping the kid get better at defense. You're putting winning above developing the player by doing this.

Most high school coaches won't zone press even though some probably should. Most high schools man up the whole game and never change it up. I see a lot of kids that play zone and then when it's time to really guard man to man, they're standing straight up and not effective guarding like you need them to be. It's something that needs to be taught when they're young and sometimes it's sacrificed to win now. Heck, I've seen some doing it in meaningless summer league games where teams are just out there playing, working on individual skills and not even running any type of offense. Summer league especially is for individual improvement and basic fundamentals only.

The fallacy here is playing in college IMO. Very few basketball players from Northern Kentucky go on to play Division I athletics whether it be boys or girls. Everyone can pay to play in college if they so choose. I understand where RCC9 is coming from to an extent, but I will also say that few kids choose one sport to specialize in while they are 9, 10, 11 or 12 years old. You are only a high school athlete one time in your life and everyone should have a goal to play at the next level, but reality also says that those that will move on are few and far between.

Use Highlands football, CovCath baseball and Holmes basketball as examples. How many kids from those programs in the last 30 years have gone on to play Division I football free of charge. Then take that number and think about how many kids have come through those programs in those same 30 years.

Didn't say it had to be D1. Just said they want to play in college.

I realize that. I was just trying to make a point. Playing the competition is a great thing both individually and as a school team if you so desire. My goal as an AAU coach was to have a group of guys ready to play high school basketball at a somewhat high level knowing full well that most if not all would have another sport as their number 1 and basketball would be secondary. I think the group that I coached for a number of years is pretty solid and it will be interesting to see what if anything the next set of coaches can do to maximize their abilities.

There is nothing wrong with that and I wish more people would take that on. You and G1 are right at the program level. But you have to have some BBall only guys too, or your program will suffer. Right now, HHS has no bball only kids that plays AAU according to a source close to the program. Do you think NCC, Holmes, Cov cath, cooper, etc can say that? I bet they are all loaded with AAU players. Maybe im wrong. But i would bet that's why they are good. They can play AAU in high school because they are BBall only players. It doesn't matter if you have kids that play all the way up together if BBall isn't their main sport or if you don't have some elite guys mixed in because you can't compete with the kids that play year round.

This should be interesting to say the least.

No question....look at the Top 9th Region players right now and you will see Basketball Only kids.

Hatton, Campbell, Beuter, Bolden, Ruthsatz, Schulte, Mcneil, Hemmerich, Mays, etc etc.

Who are the best players in the 6th & 7th grade for the boys?

7th Grade Boys. Adam Kunkel (Conner) Joel Day (Campbell Co)

What exactly is an "established" 3rd grade team? I think Shannon Minor would find that statement hilarious.

I'm not even sure if I was an "established" potty trainer in the the 3rd grade. Need to think about that for a minute. Yep, I was. I couldn't shoot a basketball and put it in that circle 2 out of 10 times but I could shoot for the potty and hit that circle about 85% of the time. Was real proud of myself too and knew that I was on my way to being a far superior athlete.

I can't believe people are seriously on here talking about 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Get a grip.

The question was who coached asked and answered! I did not mention any kid by name just that a group was working together.

I know that sounds hilarious, but what I think he means is they have been playing together for a couple years and have more experience playing competitive bball. It makes a huge difference in just one year at that age.

And by the way, they are pretty good. They are not typical 2nd and 3rd graders that you are thinking about...trust me! I coach my son's second grade team and there's not one kid in the league that could sniff playing time on that team...except the one kid in the league that plays for them. He could score 100 a game if his coach let him!
