They first played on 08/24/1973 with Boyle County winning 33 to 6.

 

Between 1975 and 1982 Boyle and Russell shared a AA District with Somerset, Wayne County and Garrard County. During this period there were some great games, most having playoff implications as Boyle, Russell and Somerset were fighting for one playoff birth. 1979 particularly comes to mind as Boyle County had beaten a good Somerset team and were favored to beat the Lakers the next week to win the District. Boyle went to Russell County and a running back named Popplewell proved to be the difference as Russell County knocked off the Rebels 19 to 6. I'm sure that Hatz or Rebel can shed more light on this game as I was only a Freshman that year.

 

The teams have played a total of 20 games in their history, with Boyle County holding a 13 to 7 advantage.

The '79 game didn't hit full pain until the end of the Danville game later that year when we found out the Lakers had beaten the Jumpers in OT by a point. Would love to have had the chance to take that 9-1 team into the playoffs.

 

The '80 game was immediate. When it was over I don't think I cared about the last three games we played at the level I did before that 1 point loss.

Amazed at the difference in this poll, I think Russell Co. has a shot, but Boyle Co. is just to much.

Sure wish there were some Russell County fans around here. I'd love to discuss this game. One of the top games in the state this week.

I think the Russell Co. fans are anxious to see how good they are compared to other top teams. I think Boyle is anxious to see how much they have improved since the beginning of the year against a good team like Russell. This makes for a very interesting match up.
