Let the First Round Playoff Blowouts Begin

Featured Replies

It's not a serious question. My reply is that if you are gonna use the blowout games as a chance to work on things you haven't, there's also the risk of keeping key kids on the field in a meaningless game. This is about the playoff format, nothing else. No one is advocating shortening the season or missing regular season games.

It is a serious question, not a suggestion. Please don't project a hidden meaning to my post that is not there.

What are the reasons for playing a game that does not determine whether you can go to the playoffs when the chance exists that a key player could be injured?

Next week will see dozens of scores in the 50 and 60 point margin of voctory.

Last year, after the first round, I counted over half the games with a 30 to 40 PLUS margin of victory.

But, many folks say "let the kids play".

I wonder how many of these schools, coaches and players really want a first round game next week when many of them KNOW they will be beat by over 50 points.

And, if the week is cold and rainy leading up to those games.... have fun getting those players focused at practice!!!

Thats a loser mentality. Praise kids effort against adversity. Praise kids heart and strategy in an underdog siuation.

I never mentioned anything about the regular season. I didn't project anything. I thought it was a stupid question. No more, no less.

Okay. If you choose not to answer it, that's fine. Noted.

Answer what? God, I'm not into playing this game with you. I think the playoffs are watered down, I never said anywhere or even hinted that we should shorten the season or eliminate games. I merely made the comment that there's pros and cons for the overwhelming favorites.. I wish the playoff system was revised so that teams merited a playoff berth instead of one by default. That's my point. I'm done with the verbal badgering with you. That's the way every thread we both are in ends up, so I'm out. Good luck to all the teams in the playoffs as they are currently constructed.

I don't think that "risk of injury to key players" is a worthwhile reason to not play a 1 vs. 4 seed round of playoffs, where blowouts could happen. The only season games that matter as far as the playoffs are concerned are the district games (except in the case of a tie). Every time you play a non-district game, you are risking an injury to a play, just as the case in the first week of playoffs. My point is that EVERY game that a team plays can have value. If there is an enormous separation between ability levels, use the first half of the game to practice the things that you need to with your varsity and the second half to give your JV team practice for next year. You can do this in the first week of the regular season or the first week of playoffs. If the only concern is "risk of injury" you wouldn't play regular season games in which you are assured of a victory.

I think the whole thing of not playing 1 vs 4 seeds is just silly. Some are so worried about blowouts, well what about the regular season? You all don't think there have been blowouts in the regular season? Shold those teams just not play on friday nights because it may end in a blowout? No. so what is the difference between the playoff games and any other friday night game?

Let them play unless you think any team that may be blown out should just give up football so they don't bother you with games with running clocks etc.

5A Greenwood, North Hardin and Montgomery Co

6A Seneca, Male, DuPont Manual and Boone Co (who BTW was 3 point from the state finals)

All won playoff games as a 3 or 4 seeds last year...I'd hated for any of those teams seasons to have ended without going to the playoffs because some people don't like the competition in the first round. If KHSAA sports are about the kids then how do you tell those 19 teams plus all of the others that were within a score or two of winning that they don't belong?

Looking at this information and what was posted by The Scribe above in this thread I have one simple question -

Why do we debate this every year for football and never debate it for basketball, baseball or the other sports that let all teams into the playoffs?

Because some people have to have something to complain about. Then when you don't agree with them they become butts about it.

Exactly my point. Thank you!

These threads pop up every year. People post facts, statistics and valid points yet there is still those that attack football and its structure, but let the other sports get a pass... Football has the least impact on academics than any other sport, 95% of the games are played at the end of the school week and the season is as short as any other sport...

Length of Playoffs first game to last game last year

Nov 4 to Dec 2 Football 28 daysAll games played on either Friday or Saturday (non-school nights)

Oct 9 to Nov 3 Soccer 25 days many games played on school nights

Feb 22 to Mar 17 Boys Basketball 24 daysmany games played on school nights

So what your saying is that Highlands beating Boyd county 70-0 makes Boyd better because they played one more game....no all it does is kills Boyds confidence.

So telling them they arent good enough to make the playoffs is a better confidence boost?? Poor remark. So if a kid has a decent game or a few decent plays, that doesn't carry over to the off-season??? The only people on here complaining are those not playing or coaching this week...that says a lot about this thread! As a former high school and college football player, I would trade nearly anything for one more down...regardless of who the opponent is! Don't degrade a kids opportunity, they deserve that much!

Using the GRC vs Trinity game, this game is more of a payday for GRC isnt it? They will probably make enough from this game (being that Trinity games are a big social event for all of the Trinity alums and such who go and never watch a play of the game, but to socialize) to cover their travel budget for all of 2013 for football and buy some other new stuff for next year. Yes its a game where they know they more than likely wont win, but still they deserve to play the game.

Indiana lets everyone in the playoffs. Also we could have the Ohio BCS, where 9-1 teams dont make the playoffs, is that fair?
