The problem I have is, if this is a team rule, then why didn't the coach pull the player back into the locker room and talk to him about it before he went out on the field to warm up instead of waiting til the game was over to mention it?

 

I would guess because that the first time the coach saw him with the towel on was during warm-ups. So, during warm-ups he was told to remove the towel. Obviously, the coaches had no problem with the gloves or they would have told him to take them off. So, I do not believe the coach had an issue with the gloves. I think the dad is trying to lump that in because other players wear different color gloves.

Here is what the NFHS Rule Book states:

 

"Wearing Illegal Equipment/Adornments:

 

Wearing towels that exceed the allowed specifications – One, white, unmarked moisture-absorbing towel can be worn. Towel width is a minimum of 4 inches and maximum of 18 inches, while the length is a minimum of 12 inches and a maximum of 36 inches."

 

It is clearly a National High School Federation rule.

How can a coach not see the player walking out of the locker room to go warm up? Most coaches are in there talking to their players, surely the coach would have seen it?

Jewel's time at Corbin is coming to an end, his childish behavior and the overall shape of the program will be the end of him. I've been told be multiple people in the Varsity Club that a few years ago the Corbin Varsity Club tried to rent charter buses for the team for a game several hours away, coach Jewel told them to cancel it that his team wouldn't be riding on a charter bus, the team made the long bus ride on the school bus and proceeded to lose. I know this ruffled a lot of feathers with the parents and boosters of Corbin and I'm sure this little incident along with not hosting a playoff game will only make things worse for him.

I don't defend either and don't have a problem with either, but the Dad said that the coach said something prior to the game starting. So clearly it WAS a problem before the Big Loss.

Maybe he didn't notice the gloves. Maybe he really didn't have a problem with the gloves and the Dad is adding to the story. Who knows. You must have it in for the coach. I'm not saying he was right, but you said it was all because he lost, and it wasn't. Without question, he had a problem with it before the game. The violation was showing up to the game not follwing dress-code in the first place. There were certainly better ways for the coach to deal with it, but the Kid unfortunately was wrong. I'm simply disputing your claim that's it was only after the lost.

I've heard of coaches declining this before. Actually, it was the team and coach who decided not to take charter buses due to simply being superstitious (lost a game when they took charters, didn't want to do it anymore).

 

I don't have a dog in this fight, just throwing another bus example out there.

I Do Not have it "In for the coach". I was good friends with his brother-in-law and went to school with his wife. They are all good people. My only thing is that as the story has been reported there seems to be some inconsistancies...and this seems to be much ado about nothing. Maybe losing had nothing to do with this...maybe he would have punished the kid even if they had pulled the upset over Bell Co...could be.

 

Seeing several if not all local schools do something similar over the past several weeks it just seems to be a bit of an over reaction.

The parents think they know better than the coach what's best for the tem and they have a running commentary about it that the kids hear and absorb. My parents would have never put me in his terrible position. Going to the newspaper with this story is pathetic.

This may not be the best place to share this, but I think we can all use a bit of levity. Please don't take this post as me making light of breast cancer or being insensitive. Keeping a sense of humor is vital to your mental well being, or so I am told, especially for those who are dealing with tough issues. With that in mind, I got a good chuckle out of this t shirt.
