So that leaves only Whitlow and Newton, correct? Is Matt Roark around campus somewhere?

I have to agree with you. I'm not necessarily a fan of Joker, but I surely can't criticize him for taking the redshirt off this season. He owes it to the seniors on the team to try and win as many games as possible this year. If playing Towles helped those chances, he should play him. And as you pointed out, the injury to Towles was beyond Joker's control.

 

Setting aside the issue of doing what is best for this year's team, Towles isn't done for the season. I expect him to be back next week or the following.

 

Second, if I'm correct, Towles should get some very valuable experience in the last couple of games this season. Which should help him considerably in competing for the starting spot next year. If he turns out being better than Smith and wins the starting job next year, that's great for UK football. You want your best player out there. The concept of saving him for 2016 and putting a weaker team on the field in the meantime just does not make sense to me. Furthermore, if Smith is better next year and they think Whitlow will do a capable job as the 2, there is nothing preventing Towles from being redshirted next year.

 

I'm thrilled as Pete that Towles took off the redshirt this year and hope he gets back on the field and gets some experience. I've got no problem with that decision by Joker. There's plenty to fairly criticize Joker about; no reason to unfairly criticize him for a decision he pretty much had to make.

For me it isnt about Towles. It revolves around Morgan Netwon.

 

Morgan Newton came to the University as a 4 star recruit. He and the other kid was both 4 star QBs.

1. Morgan Newton steps in when Hartline was suspended for the bolw game. So the coaches are telling everyone Newton is more talented than the other kid. WHo eventually transfers because Newton is tagged the Future of the program

 

2. Newton Starts 11 games the next season.

 

3. After starting 11 games last season Now Newton isnt good enough to be the back up or the #3 QB. After the Florida game the Coaches say WHitlow is the person that they have been trying to work as the #2 QB. But we didnt think it was best to feed him to the Gators. Neither WHitlow or Newton were ready if something Happened to Smith.

 

4. So now Whilow is clear cut QB due to the injury to Smith and Once again Newton isnt good enough to be the back up QB. They have to pull the Red Shirt off Towles so he can be the Back up / split time as the main QB.

 

5. So if Towles is now good enough to split time with WHitlow why wasn't he the Back-up to begin with? Because now you are saying he is just as good as Whitlow if not better?

 

6. So now Towles is injured and Newton now has to be the back up.

 

Bottom line the Coaching staff has made a series of bad decisions as it relates to preparing kids. Most important they made a bad decision on Newton 2 years ago or this coaching Staff can't develop kids.

 

I also would like to know did Joker not have enough courage to stay behind his decision to red shirt Towles because his dad was crying?

 

Either way you try to Spin it Joker decsions or lack of development of Newton has set this team back!

I don't disagree with you that Joker handled the back up QB issue poorly. It should have been obvious to Joker after last season that Newton is not a SEC level QB. The right thing to do for him and the team was to have moved him to another position at the end of last season so the kid could have been learning a new position during the offseason; spring football and summer camp. Smith should have been the sole QB working at the no. 1 QB spot during spring football and summer camp. Towles and Whitlow should have split snaps during summer camp to determine the no. 2 QB. Had they done so, whomever was chosen as the no. 2 QB should have been ready to be inserted when Smith went out with an injury. Putting Newton in against Florida was unfair to the kid and to the team. So I agree with you on that point.

 

I don't find fault with Joker for taking the redshirt off of Towles however. Smith couldn't play due to injury; Newton couldn't play due to talent. That left just Whitlow and Towles. He had to take the redshirt off. No choice. Heck, had he made the right decision with Newton at the end of the season, it could have been Towles as the no. 2 to start the season (and no redshirt to begin with) and Whitlow starting the season with it on. It would have come off too once Smith went down.

 

It would have been a completely different scenario had Mosslowski (or however you spell it) stayed, but he didn't. Frankly I don't know enough about his departure to place blame on Joker, but perhaps his evaluation of the kid vs Newton played a role in that.

Coach Brooks also thought Newton was good enough to start his freshman year when Hartline went down. Phillips took a lot of heat the following year from the fans when he went with Hartline over Newton. It just seems that Newton never bounced back from losing out to Hartline that year.

Or lack of development by this staff. Newton is worse now than when he arrived.
