Lot of players go into college with a lot of potential and never make it. Can't blame everything on Phillips. Hartline and Smith both improved under Phillips. I remember a lot of people talking about how awful Hartline was early before turning into a pretty good QB. Are you saying the coaching staff had nothing to do with the improvement of Hartline, but it is their fault Newton did not?

Not 100% sure, but I believe the playing time is in regards to a medical redshirt and has to be done in the first half of the season. For a regular redshirt as soon as the player steps on the field it is done.

I'd think another reason for playing would be to help him prepare for next camp. I think you'd agree that the more experience one gets playing at the D-1 level, the better. Towles wants to be the starting QB next year. In no way is he content to just give the starting position to Smith for the next couple of years and becoming the starting QB thereafter. Anything that happens this year to increase the chances of Towles being the starter next year is a good thing.
