2006 Preseason 1A Poll

Featured Replies

I agree with that list minus SF and phelps. The rest are in the hunt almost every year and 2 are in our own district. Its funny how our critics used to cry about how we played in a "Weak" district.

You still play in a weak district. Pikeville's JV team could win three or four games in the district every year.

There are 3 teams in this district that are in competition for region almost every year. I agree there is a sharp dropoff after that. But, how many districts in the state have that many region contenders in it. Answer:Not many. Im not saying its the toughest but any district you have to beat Hazard and Paintsville to win cant be called weak either.

and in district 7...

Not a classification question. But is it true Mayfield QB Blake Shelton has quit the team and just wants to concentrate on basketball? I know he hasn't been attending their spring practices.
Adam Shelton, I'm told, is not planning on playing football this fall. I expect that could change before the end of summer, though.

It's weak too.

But I think any of our teams, with the exception of Pineville, could make the playoffs in District 8 most years.

District 8 is stronger at the top and weaker at the bottom than District 7.

Not in most years. Last year Cumberland and Williamsburg would have made the playoffs in the 4th spot, and in 2004, Evarts and Cumberland who didn't make the playoffs could have finished as high as second. This past season the region feature 5 good teams, that saw who ever was playing at home get the win. This could be big for district 8, with the winner of the district hosting 4 playoff games next year. Other then Lynn Camp District 7 teams have not played well on the road in recent years.

The burg should be improved this season. I myself am wondering if the campers will be down this year.

Ok so back to the point of this thread. Is Danville going to return to form and fight its way back to the state title game? Will Beechwood be a force under its new head coach? What team has the best chance to knock NCC off? Is there a sleeper team out there that will surprise the perennial class A powers?

Newport Central Catholic

Mayfield

Danville

Somerset

Pikeville

Beechwood

LCA

Lynn Camp

I think Michael Vicars will get the ball more next year and put up serious numbers. He is very fast and runs with desire. Will definatly be interesting!

I agree... they will be more run oriented and if they are smart they will go ahead and insert Parr the Sophomore in there for the experience. By end of the year he should be battle tested and ready for the playoffs. Vicars will be contending for Player of the Year as he is very fast and explosive.

Watched him against us in the Pike County Bowl last year and I coundlnt agree more.

I was told Mr. Shelton is back with the Cards now.

Mayfield being Mayfield and comming off a state runner up showing will lead to a fairly lofty preseason ranking as it always does but in reality Mayfield should start very slow and have alot of early problems with the bigger schools on their schedule. By the time the Cards get into their district schedule in the latter part of the season they should be a favorite within their district and will be the regional favorite or atleast one of the favorites but that is as far as one can expect the Cards to go. Anything beyond this point would be strictly a suprise and would require rapid development from the young Cards who have some talent but are a couple years away

I think the Ads returning starters will have to make them the preseason favorite but last years Ads team didn't seem to show the same traits of past Danville teams. I cant put my finger on what was missing but they just didnt seem to have somthing and if they dont find whatever it was that was missing then I think the title favorite would have to be from NKY.

Overall I think class A was down last year with NCC being the exception, espically late, they really seemed to have come together. I look for 1A to again be a weak class overall with maybe the most wide open field the class has seen in years. Might be the year that a glass slipper is found that fits.

I could go along with that. I've been watching Danville teams since 1990, and you're right, there was something missing, but I didn't know quite what it was. They've got some awfully good returning lineman, and I think that could be the difference for them.

Any Idea's on what Frankfort looks like they took a lost .. losing Tillman , along with other key seniors but I dont think they would lose a major lost.

Returning Josh smith, Antoine Robinson, E.j Fields, Jordan Morgan, Camron juette, Mico Wills and couple of lineman I dont remember their names but great players.

I expect Frankfort to be playoff-bound again but not as good as Danville in their district. I personally felt Robinson was a better back than Tillman. Coach Buckett could shed more light.
