Polar Bears drop Mustangs for first 3-0 start ever

Congrats to the Polar Bears!

A scoreless first half in this one, even though Bracken had several opportunities to score. By my count, the Polar Bears were within 25 yards of the end zone on four separate possessions in the opening half. But each time the Brossart D stood its ground. During the final first half possession, Brossart positioned itself for a relatively short FG (don't remember the distance). Bracken blocks the FG attempt as the horn sounds.

 

Brossart receives ball to start second half & the Polar Bears stop them. Bracken takes over from their own 18-yard line (thanks to a personal foul penalty), but proceeds to score the game's first points on a 36-yard TD run by Dallas Honan. It was an impressive finish to a nice 82-yard drive. Bracken up 7-0.

 

Brossart gets the ball back & on its first play BC's Scott Fite intercepts Casey Pelgen. The Polar Bears proceed to go on another impressive drive, capped by Eli Florer's 3-yard TD run. PAT missed & Bracken leads 13-0.

 

Huge credit to Brossart at this point. Polar Bears have all the momentum, but the Mustangs answer back with what I believe was just a two play drive. Not sure who scored the TD for Brossart, but the big play of the drive was a huge run by Jacob Elbert. Kid can flat out get it done. Missed Brossart PAT makes it 13-6 with about 8:00 left.

 

Bracken again drives the field & kills a lot of clock, yet is unable to score. Brossart's offense takes the field for one last drive with just under 3 minutes left. The Stangs end up driving the field & Pelgen scores on a QB keeper with about 7 seconds left. With the score 13-12, Brossart opts to go for 2 (I would have done the same). Ball is handed to Elbert who is stopped at the goal line by the Bracken D. Brossart's ensuing onside kick was a bust, allowing the Polar Bears to take a knee & enjoy a perfect 3-0 record.

 

Ultimately, it was the Polar Bears three-headed running attack of Connor Rigg, Eli Florer, & Dallas Honan that made the difference. As good as Elbert is, he was just one player. The Bracken threesome simply ended up being too much for the Brossart D, particularly in the second half. I'm not sure if Bracken gained a single yard through the air in the second half.

 

But major props to Brossart for coming back & coming within a few inches of winning this game 14-13. Again, I was very impressed with Jacob Elbert. He has to carry most of the offensive load & also is asked to do a lot defensively. Very nice player.

 

Just a great high school football game. Congrats to Brossart on a hard-fought game & very proud of my Polar Bears! Enjoy this week off & take pride in what has been accomplished! :thumb:

 

Great post RP on what sounds like was a great game. I'm mad at myself for thinking about this game. Highlands had a bye and I could have taken in this game. The Polar Bears are my second favorite team. Oh well, I did spend some quality time with Henry, my Mom and a brother.

Unfortunately some of us don't have banker's hours or write our own work schedule, so had to work and missed game wanted to go to:madman:, can anyone tell am mad? Just wanted to add some thoughts since can't comment on the game. Am so proud of this group of seniors, does anyone realize this is their 4th Coach? Have said on here since Bracken County started the football program because of the size of the program you have to play your athletes on both sides of the ball,special teams,etc. You can't profile at a small school on account of how big or small someone is, if you need them at RB,DB,OL,DL,LB, you put them there,trust me they will excel, just from what have been reading and hearing about this team, this Coach gets that. If the QB is your best DB or LB, put him there, if your LB can run the ball hard,put him at RB, if your RB is your best KR and PR, put him there and so and so on. A lot of people thought this team was all McClain and Siple, so glad they are proving them wrong, with their defense this is the year they may be able to trip up either Eminence or Frankfort. On a side note and off subject, just glad to beat Bishop Brossart at something:lol:, we always seem to come in second and that is a compliment by the way:thumb:

I heard this one was particularly sweet to Bracken given how Brossart managed the game clock in a blow out win in JV football a few weeks back.

It's just awesome to say POLAR BEARS 3-0!

Congrats to the Polar Bears. They outplayed the Mustangs and deserved to win. Kudos to Brossart for playing for the win. I don't think they would of had any chance to beat Bracken trying to match 10 yard overtime scores.

 

On a side note. Brossart had to play their two point conversion attempt without their starting QB due to the "helmet coming off" rule. Curious to see what play Brossart would have drawn up instead of having to go with the "wildcat" where everyone knew where the ball was going.

imo, i would say the ball was going to the man regardless of what they lined up in. He had a great effort from what ive been reading.
