Actually Willie had nothing with the soph class when they were in middle school. He wasn't here yet. The labeling at that level was done by a coach that is no longer with the program, and no it was not John Messmer. In 7th grade this class was the next coming. Early maturity and a transfer to Moeller later, the damage was done. ZacK Hurtt was the only one to overcome not being one of the middle school stars, to succeed at the next level. Hats off to him. Maybe the other kids did not work to become better, but lack of playing time, encouragement, and sense of being part of the program probably had a hand in that. Again this did not happen under Willie. I think he will realize every kid in the program is important, because you can never really know where the next suprise star might be. It may be the last kid on that very long 7th grade bench

BTW, look for Luke's best sport to be baseball. I'm sure he will get a solid look at playing varsity as a FROSH. For the record, that doesn't happen very often at CCH (Bleser, Grogan, Beecham are the few I know of). He is an excellent catcher and hitter.

I hear similar reports however I have not had the opportunity play. I checked with some folks I trust and they can't say enough good things about him as a player.

'Stang...wasn't "labelling" the kids per se...just evaluating what has been demonstrated to this point in time. Heck, I hope I'm wrong and 8 freshman are still playing 3 years from now. When was the last time a kid who wasn't a starter in grade school was playing as a senior at HHS?

Can't speak for HHS - At Brossart, one year ago a former B-Teamer from St. Mary named Brett Reilly and this year 6th Man (Potential Starter) Kyle Lubbers.

Neerfan, I have seen SK's freshman play a few times and they seem to be pretty good. They held Dixie to 5 points the whole second half last night. Have you been able to catch them? Any thoughts?

'Crunch...I was just "bird-dogging" (IMHO) the talent in the classes. Obviously there have to be fill-ins of older boys...but who?? The days of Kenny Shields (and his era) are over at HHS. No longer do you see that many kids still involved. There used to be 2 separate practices simultaneously, a reserve practice at one end, varsity at the other. Then toward the end of the practice there would be full court scrimmage between the two. On game day, most of the JV team hit the stands after the "reserve" game, as you stated. Now the entire team dresses varsity??? This year's Jr. class is thin, which means Soph and Frosh will be "heavy" next year. I look for Simons to return next year. (year off will re-kindle the passion for hoops). They will need his scoring ability. The problem is, if football runs deep as is predicted, the FB players suffer from a burn-out...that lasts about 2 weeks. I bet you Drew misses playing!

 

PS. qryche11... that 1st grader @ Woodfill is going to Moeller. Dad's mad that a FB player will get minutes ahead of him this year! :banana:

 

 

:laugh: hmmmm sounds like someone else who left and went to Moeller. I keep checking the box scores for his name and seem to only catch it sparingly. Too many times parents pull the trigger on a program and think the grass is greener.

 

On the Simons deal... I know his Dad is heavily involved in coaching so I was surprised as well to see him not on the roster. He is probably kicking himself... there is only so much satisfaction in pushing iron in the cold months of January/February.... the smell of the Gym on game night.....That is something you bet he misses.

The Sainola boy excels at baseball (also, his best sport) and that is why he's at CCHS. The Maile boy's Dad and Ryan's Mom know each other from way back and they played summer ball together. Dis any one say that "R-word" ???? :banana:

 

 

Maybe HHS will get lucky and CCH will tick the Maile boy off and he will go to Caketown like Rich did...

I agree. McFarland is a good player, but I think he is out of position at point.

You are entitled to your opinion but the numbers don't lie. He's very consistent. He averages a double/double in scoring and rebounding not to mention his defensive game. He's a team player and a leader on the floor.

I done reading this thread because its seems to be only about Highlands and their coaches. What happened to the players, since the topic was best freshman and sophs?
