Take Down The Statue

From now on, the statue will always be a reminder of what Joe Pa didn't do, not what he did.

That's my mindset.

Once we find out MJ bet on basketball and was suspended when he played baseball I'll lead the charge to tear down his statue.

Some of those Mothers and Fathers let their children down as well.

Very true, which likely happens nearly everywhere daily.

My only point is that the statue and the other things are only tokens of accomplishments in the sporting arena. The personal stuff, while horrid in some instances, are just that,, personal. The sporting accomplishments stand on their own, apart of the personal garbage. If the statue offends I get that. But I just don't think the statue symbolizes anything more than all the good things he accomplished. Regardless of how anyone feels about the recent stuff, to simply ditch all the good things that JoePa did on the gridiron doesn't make sense to me.

While I understand your sentiment. It is far from reality. Joe Pas legacy is destroyed. This "personal stuff" will immensely overshadow his career. Take it down...

There was a really good article in UDA Today talking about this, the article was called Penn State Still Lives In The Bronze Age

I think there are varying degrees of what you're saying. If there was a statue of one of your kids' teachers at their school, and then it turned out that the teacher ended up raping and killing your kid, would you be fine with the statue standing?

I hadn't heard that Paterno was involved in a rape and murder, when did this come to light?

I read where Brown University, Joe's Alma Mater, has take his name off of the sportsmanship trophy that is awarded to a student athelete each year. Also looking to remove his name on a scholarship fund?

My point was only that there are varying degrees of "personal issues", and that to say that, across the board, personal issues are only personal issues and shouldn't be taken into account when it comes to things like public honors or memorials is not an opinion that I would agree with. Drunk driving is wrong, for example, but I don't think the crime is heinous enough call for a statue to be taken down. Rape and murder would most certainly be, in my book. I was offering a slightly more extreme end of the spectrum.

For the record, I think giving a hand in covering up for a serial rapist and pederast is most definitely on the more extreme end of the spectrum as well, and I think it certainly calls for the removal of the statue.

Ok just thought maybe I had missed something, seems like it's something new every day with this story.

Penn State is removing the statue this weekend.

I read that some believe that a reporter broke the story about it coming down just to spark a further outcry and get the process going. I for one hope it does come down this weekend. Penn State needs to get rid of anything from that era.
