Junior was a huge name in baseball, one of the greatest to play the game. If he used, he did an extremely good job of hiding it because I feel like someone would have been bound to rat him out by now. If they took down all the other kings of that era, why would they let Junior go free?

 

I'm biased towards Junior, but I really don't think he used.

I like his stand to not vote for any suspected user on the first ballot. I would probably go out 5 years. Anyone suspected of using would not get my vote for 5 years. After that the evidence against the user would determine how much longer I would refuse to vote for them.

This line of thinking I will never understand. It's also the reason the baseball HOF is a joke to me. Either you are a HOF'er or you aren't. The first ballot crap is laughable.

I agree with you ... except in these 'roid cases I think withholding your vote is a good rule. Give it time for more evidence to come out and to see how time shakes everything out on the 'roid era. In addition, someone who is almost certainly a 'roid user will likely never get my vote. But time could change my view point.

Therein lies the problem. We never can really quantify how much or little effect it had on players. To me guys like Sosa and McGwire were a direct product of what steroids could do. Let us face it, outside of swinging for the fences every time at the plate, they were not good baseball players. Both majorly overrated. Sosa was the king of the meaningless late inning HR in a 7 run game. Power and strength was their entire game. But again, how much it helped no person really knows. Maybe some of the pitchers they were going up against were suffering from some adverse side effects of steroids that assisted in them hitting more HRs? Who knows?

Baseball let the steroid era happen, they have no one but themselves to blame for it. (look who they keep as their commissioner, should tell you a lot right there.) You can not just erase a whole era of baseball from the books, therefore, let them all in.

Then t's up to the voters to decide if a one dimensional player (althought McGwire was pretty good defensively) deserves to be in the HOF.

I know. I was agreeing. There's no way to quantify these guys when it comes to HOF voting. I think I heard a Costas interview, may have been on Cowerds show, but he made a great statement on how these guys should be viewed in his opinion. I'm trying to locate it to link it.

It doesn't matter if you "know" he lied. The court of public opinion says that he did, and as long as voters vote on their opinion and w/ their personal bias, he won't get in until the steroid era gains more acceptance.
