Transitioning from youth football to High School, is self interest the only concern?

I don't think varsity programs need to contribute a thing to the youth programs - youth programs, as in the NKYFL - that use their fields. They allow them to use their facilities (for a fee, I would assume). If they want to let kids in jerseys into the varsity games for free, that's sure nice, but not necessary. As for their feeder programs, like Colonel Youth Football, then I would say it's certainly in their best interest for the varsity/jv/freshman coaches to pass on as much information to the feeder coaches and to assist in as much design of sets and schemes as possible. It would certainly be helpful to have progress meetings involving teams and players as well. I would assume that at least the 8th graders would be kept under at least somewhat of a watchful eye by the high school coaches as well. It's a lot to do, but so is running a perennially strong program.

Also, link to the previous thread please? Anyone?

When did this start? The kids use to be free as long as they wore their jersey.

Been that way for at least 3 years or so now.

That's a joke

So far on this thread and the previous thread I have heard that :

1) The South Kenton Lions are acknowleged during a home varsity game;

2) The Head Varsity coach speaks to players and parents at the annual banquet;

3) The head varsity coach provides coaching support for South Kenton youth coaches;

4) Simon Kenton has provided facilities for games and practices free of charge, although this may not continue due to board policies out of the control of the head varsity coach.

5) I just heard back from the man who supervises the admission gate, and youth players are charged. I will advocate to get this policy changed.

Given that during football season a head varsity coach's day , at a minimum, starts at 6 am and if he is real lucky, is done by 7pm, what more do you think he or the varsity program in general needs to contribute to the youth program? And what is reasonable?

I come from a program where there was no youth program and no engagement from the head coach until a kid was a Junior. So I am at a real loss to comprehend the dissatisfaction here.

Who's dissatisfied? Many of us simply don't have a problem with players going anywhere they want to rather than feeling obligated to a certain school based on where they played youth football.

For what it's worth...it should be mentioned that the Spartans are NOT a youth feeder program for Beechwood.

I agree.

If you analyzed where kids go from the different youth teams and leagues, you would find that kids have gone to different high schools from programs for at least the last three decades. Red Devils have supplied players to NC, Cambell, etc. Spartans have sent kids to teams thoughout Kenton (Cov Cath, BW, ect.). This must be an issue because it seems to be a hot topic. But, I can't believe people think kids should be "loyal" to a high school because they played in a certain league or in a certain program.

Parents will pursue what they think is the best option for their kids. It's not being disloyal. It's being intelligent.

The good news is I have talked to a lot of parents who had no initial plans to send their kids to Highlands. Once the kid plays in the FTJFL, the family builds relationships and the kids come to Highlands.

Take heart J. Don't stress over losing a few kids. Keep supporting the program and good things will happen.

Perhaps there is absolutely nothing the coach or the school can do. Maybe the family wants a Catholic education. Maybe the family wants a small school. There could be a number of reasons a family decides to go elsewhere which the current school has little or no control over. In that case, you just wish the family the best of luck. Every school loses players for one reason or another. If they choose to go, that is their decision and you move forward with those who are with you.

True. I grew up in Ft. Mitchell and played Spartan ball. Granted, Cov Cath didn't have a youth feeder program in those days, but regardless, I only had two options for where I would go to high school: Cov Cath, and Covington Latin....period. Beechwood wouldn't have even been considered.

They why should a youth program get ANY support from a high school? Shouldn't the high school program focus exclusively on the kids that are committed to being there? In previous thread, there were youth program commenters who had large expectations placed on the program and the head coach. If a youth coach in you own feeder takes his kids elsewhere, I don't see as a head coach, how you can continue to invest in the situation.

You invest in the kids who stay! If some leave, and they will, then best of luck to them, and just move on with the kids who stay.

That's easy j. How many kids and coaches in the youth/feeder program? Let's just say 50. So one or two go to another school. You still have 48 or 49 people who you supported who are joining your school. No one wins them all. No one. As I have said before, every high school loses kids to other schools. Beechwood loses kids. Highlands loses kids. The privates lose out on kids to each other and yes, sometimes to a public school. You have to EXPECT to lose kids. It is going to happen. Focus on the kids that are with you.

VOR, the problem is you do not know who is with you. Up until two weeks ago, Mr. Stringer was conditioning with SK. And the defection percentage is a lot higher. It is that kind of self serving, deceptive behavior that is so flat out OFFENSIVE.

The definition of character is doing what you say, and saying what you do. Parents of elite athletes for too long have not been truthful with youth programs and public high school programs. They lie to your face to get what they need and then move on. It is about time there was some accountability for this type of behavior!

Blah blah blah. So far in this thread(or maybe the other one) you have blatantly broken rule 5 of this forum, even though you were wrong, by incorrectly pegging me as Mr. Stringer. You have indirectly broken rule 4 by discussing where players live and where they play. It is clear you have an axe to grind with BW and Cov Cath. Maybe you should take a look at the Kenton County Schools at look at maybe the parents want something better for their kids academically? KCS currently has 11 openings for principals. That is eye opening. Test scores are abysmal. Grad rates are poor. Bottom line, they are broken. I get that if you take the top 10% out of the schools they are pretty equal, but its the rest of the students that suffer at schools like SK that have such poor teacher to student ratios. Look at ACT scores at each school, and if doesn't open your eyes then academics has no place in your view. As for Ethan, maybe he didn't know where he was going to school up until a couple weeks ago? Maybe the decisions aren't as corrupt as they are in your eyes? Do you know him or his family? I do, and they are as straight forward as they come. It was made clear several months ago to all coaches and anyone else that another school was a possibility, and he was encouraged to continue to work out with SK as long as he wanted. And for the record, I know that Miles Simpson played for the Raiders as a youth. I have no idea where they live or lived, but that suggests he may have lived in either the Scott or Dixie district, yet went to SK. That was my point about the open enroll aspect, but that hurts your argument so you simply blew it off with "Scott names their field a soccer complex". Seems you have simply gotten your feelings hurt and have lost some good players, and are lashing out. Move on man, move on. If a school the size of SK is hurt by losing a couple players, perhaps they should look in the mirror and see they, as a program, need to make some changes.

Ok, you've just been named KY High school football czar. What do you do to the parents? Do you punish the players? Do you fine the parents? Also, what do you do to the coaches who show no loyalty to the youth football players and start new transfers ahead of the youth who have shown loyalty to the program for years? Sure the transfers might be better but then again, the schools you lose players to might be better also. You have to be fair to all sides you know. I'd love to hear your solution.
