35 straight innings without an ER dating back to last year...ML record is 39 for a reliever I believe and 59 for all pitchers...

Yep, I misunderstood.

Bottom line is that Ondrusek left a belt high fastball in the middle of the plate vs. the only real threat in that lineup.

In a way we're agreeing again. If Chapman wasn't the "closer" he would have faced the only real threat in that lineup.

My issue is I don't think pitching the 9th inning is as difficult as a task as it's made out to be. If Chapman is the closer I'm not sure it's the best way to use him, but right now it really looks like he could become the most dominating closer for the next decade.

Chapman can close 2 or 3 games in less pitches than a lot of closers take to save one...Hes good for 4 or 5 straight save opportunities :D

Marshall is more comfortable now, Chapman is the same if not better which is scary...The Reds are rolling now...If Madson was healthy we wouldnt be debating this still but he isnt  Chapman is the answer at closer, he can handle it Im not sure the others can it requires a different makeup and is a harder inning than you make it out too be...

That I'll agree with certainly.

I wanna see the All Star Game come down to the NL having a 1 run lead in the 9th, with Chapman on the mound facing Hamilton, Cabrera and Bautista.

Wouldn't it be better if he faced the Top 3 Homerun Leaders in the AL? Hamilton, Dunn and Encarnacion--all former Reds.

Would be fun for sure, but I'd like to make it interesting. Dunn and E-5 0% chance.

Jeff Piccoro deserves a fat chick in a Yugo.

Have seen him in action at Hofbrau...he wouldn't turn it down

If Dunn closes his eyes, swing as hard as he can, sqaures it up and gets the barrel on it...600+ Feet

I have no problem with how Dusty handled that inning since Chapman is the closer. If he wasn't the closer he would have been in where Ondrusek came in. That's my issue with having him close.

So you're saying the closer should only work the 9th? Why wait until it's a save situation? Imo with the tieing run on deck it's a great spot to use Chapman if he is rested. Is Ondrusek automatic like Chapman has been? Joe Torre used Mo Rivera a lot to get the last out of the 8th and come back out in the 9th. I know a lot of the time the game was in a save situation but not always.

9 pitches 8 strikes and 2 K's. 105 batters faced and 52 strikeouts. That's good right?

That's insane.

No, I'm actually saying it doesn't matter who the "closer" is. I don't think Dusty really felt the need to get Chapman loose in the 8th last night (and he shouldn't have) b/c his best starter was dominating going into the 8th and Marshall and Ondrusek have to be able to get outs in the last 3 innings at some point. You can't have Chapman pitch the last two innings of every game you have the lead. Like spindoc said they had a 4 run lead. If Chapman wasn't the closer he would have been getting ready when Marshall was and my guess is he would have came in when Dusty went out to talk to Cueto.

Billy Hamilton has stolen more bases than any major league team.
