Bengals organization has reservations about Andy Dalton

Featured Replies

Back when receivers weren't allowed to run free. Different game, but I'm sure Joe would be successful today. I'm not quite ready to compare Dalton and Montana. Futurecoach brought up Brees. I'm not ready to compare those two either but I hope fc is correct and Dalton becomes a Brees clone. I personally think Brees has a bigger arm than Dalton but it isn't Rogers like.

Exactly, it is easier now for qbs than it was then because of the rule changes.

Drew Brees, IMO, is the most accurate qb in the NFL. Has anyone ever seen the episode on tv where Brees takes on an archer. The target was 20 yds and Brees hit the bullseye 10 for 10 and the archer was 8 for 10. Absolutely amazing to watch.

  • Jay Gruden on the Greg Cosell comments about Andy Dalton's arm strength: "I don't know where that came from and why he said it. If there were reservations about Andy Dalton there would be a lot more quarterbacks here right now. We know and he knows he has to get better. ... I have no reservations about arm strength. I think he can do it all."

Coach Gruden's statement is what I was thinking. Where did that come from and why now?

I was right about him not having a strong arm you and others were wrong. Also that article seems to state that his arm was the reason their offense wasn't that good the last 9 games of the season. I acknowledged his success and said he was a winner. Just doubt the arm strength like others around the league do and even people in their own organization.

I also shown you articles last year of people saying his arm was better than what they thought. Guys who questioned his arm coming out, but didn't question it anymore after seeing him. He does not have a rocket arm, but not have this little weak arm like you try to say. Its an average arm, and as long as he learns the game and antipates well and average arm with smarts and anticipation will be able to fit balls into small windows too. People with stronger arms can get away with not being as great anticipating a throw. People like Tom Brady, Manning, etc are great becasue they can antcipate and have strong arms. He probably will never be a star in the league, but a good QB, and a good QB can win games and go far in playoffs.

You are right this year definitely will give us a better idea on him though.

I know it's Cincinnati so a playoff trip is a good year, but NO they didn't win big last year. They haven't won a playoff game in a long time. My hope is their goal is to win the Super Bowl not just make the playoffs.

Completely agree their goal needs to be Super Bowl! However they had a young team, and new QB and all that with out an off season. So even though they didn't play top 10 QB's, they did play top 10 defenses in most all important categoreis including yours. So to still pull off wins with your rookie QB against that is a good thing. Especially when all these other teams still would lose a game or two against teams like that.

Now this year the schedule is going to be tough, even tougher than what it ranks IMO. The NFC East didn't ahve a great record in their division, but I expect all thsoe teams to be much better this year. Dalton definitely will have to make big strides this year, for them to have success.

FC I hope you're right. Big thing with the schedule this year is they will still face top 10 defenses this year, but this year they won't get the breaks they got on playing terrible QB's.

I think it's the biggest crock of poop ever printed. First of all, if Cosell is so tight with the coaches and front office, put a name on it. Who in the Bengals organization says they're "worried" about his arm strength? Once again, a poor stab at trying to fill dead space by a generic comment, likely not remotely associated with a "coach".

Considering I saw him throw a jumpball off his back foot under pressure in Cincy into double coverage that the rook WR went up with Polumalu and Clark and hauled it in, and it was no less than 60 yards in the air, well, yeah, I'm sure Marvin and the OC are losing sleep on how they're gonna overcome his "noodle".

Stupid.

I agree this year definitely will be much tougher, and Dalton is really going to have to step up and play really well. They talk about how smart he is, so hopefully he shows signs of improvement this year.

AJ Green defended him today by saying "it's not who can throw the ball 100 yds it's a game where you have to put the ball where it needs to be thrown and he does that". There's only so many humans like Peyton Manning with a prototype body, arm, smarts etc. Most QB's know their strengths and weaknesses. I think Dalton knows he doesn't have a cannon compared to some NFL QB's but he makes up for it in anticipation I think.

Most knew all along he was Pennington 2.0.

I don't look at Dalton that way at all. I know it is hard to compare apples to apples with NFL QBs but I think Dalton is already better than Pennington.

I think Dalton will end up being somewhere between a Chad Pennington and a Drew Brees. Neither one has rocket arms, but both were winners. I think Dalton's arm is better than Pennington though and obviously can't say at this point that he will be as good as someone as Brees. However if he can end up being somewhere between those two, then he will hve a long and very good NFL career.

Pennington pre the 4 arm surgeries was very good. His arm was never strong, but it was strong enough.

Give me a guy who can a.) can make the right calls at the line and b.) be accurate on his throws under 20 yards, and I will take him all day long. I don't care if people call it "dinking and dunking" your way down the field. The way I look at it, if I can move the ball down the field, take some time off the clock (giving my D a chance to rest), and score, or at the very worst, drastically change field position...then I'll take it.

Yeah, it's great if you've got a guy who can throw it 70 yards off his back foot...but, tell me how much that helped guys like Jamarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf? There's more to playing the QB spot than just arm strength.

To borrow a line from a Dirty Harry movie..."A man's got to know his limitations." And as long as Dalton and Gruden both recognize that, they'll be fine.
