I am all for keeping ones priorities in order. However, IF he is leaving, what about living up to his commitment to the kids at Whitley County? He agreed to be the new head coach there and they deserved better. If Whitley had not lived up to their part of his deal, that would be different, but if you agree to a contract, you oughta at least give these kids 1 year. Now IF he leaves, they will be left with a short time frame to interview, hire someone, and get them on campus to begin preparing for the 2006 season which will kick off very soon (around 3 mos by my estimation).

 

If he isn't leaving, why doesn't he come forward and say 'I am not going anywhere, these rumors are wrong'?

 

If he leaves like this, I understand their frustrations. If my kid were on that team, I would be frustrated as well.

He is 100% gone.

 

Second, sometimes doing the right thing is hard. He took the easy way out. In this case, he asked the kids to make a commitment to the program. He asked that they devote more of their time. He told them they were either in or out. When they asked him over the last weeks, he repeatedly said he was staying. He could have made his intentions known right after spring practice, but elected not to do so. So he not only did the dishonorable thing, he did it at the wrong time.

 

When hired he made a commitment for AT LEAST the following year. What are you telling others of faith if you say one thing and do another, what are you teaching your kids when you don't follow through on commitments. What are you saying to future employers when you don't do the job you were hired to do.

 

The problem with Coach Gentry is that he apparantly has no loyalties.

One thing is for sure as APEX stated above; the Mutt is eating a lot of crow. I have defended and complimented Coach Gentry since he was hired. I thought he did an outstanding job in Spring Practice and based on his own "WORD", I was sure he would not run out on his team.

 

He went, as far as, calling a team meeting about a month ago for the sole purpose of reassuring everyone he was staying at Whitley. lt looks like that was all an act or play of some kind at this point. Crow sure is tastey.

Sometimes you just ake decisions that deserve to be bashed. The way that Gentry handled the situation is the big deal here. He has known he was leaving for well over a month, he was just waiting to make it official so he could keep drawing a paycheck and not have to live in the everyday scrutiny of his decision.

 

The decision for him to go to GA probably isn't a bad one, the way he has handled the situation has been terrible. This is what reveals his true character.

 

Also everyone should understand that the job he is taking down there would have always been available to him. He could have stayed a year and fulfilled his committment and then left had he chosen.

Some people tried to warn a couple of individuals with connections to the Whitley program to "dig deep" when Gentry was named as a candidate, but there were apparently a couple of well-connected search committee members convinced that he was the man to run the program and they were able to get their way. :sleep:

 

What type of person would meet with his players after all the rumors started and tell them that he was not going anywhere knowing that he was leaving..................not the the kind that should be in charge of the Whitley football program.

 

Whitley has developed a really good football program and they should be able to overcome this quickly with the talent and support now in place.

Does anyone know what whitley is going to do for a coach any word time is drawing short football starts in months its only fair for the kids to know who will lead them. Could they lose any kids from this I hope they don't lose intrest because the way this has took place time for lonnie to move and get this behind the county.

Loyalty to family is fine, but I was raised in a situation where a man's word is his bond, contracts were meant to be fulfilled, and a handshake sealed the deal. I'm not niave, but geesh, how can you promise and not fulfill? I have had the opporunity in life to have left commitments for greener pastures, but when I have given my word, someone else had to mow those pastures

I understand priorities. But walking out on a commitment made to Whitley County and those kids is wrong as long as they were upholding their end of the bargain. He at least should have given them 1 year.

 

My loyalty is to my family as well. However, I took a new job several months ago and commited to being here for at least 1 year thru the startup. Since then, I have been offered other jobs, for better money and benefits, but turned them down. Why? Because my word was my bond.

 

But let's give Gentry the benefit of the doubt here. Let's just say that the job was too good to pass up and was a once in a lifetime deal. At least come forward right away and tell the administration and the kids what the deal is. If you have to walk out, at least do right by the kids you are leaving. Don't deny it when you know it is true, then turn around and walk out. Just be honest and upfront and that would go a long way to smoothing this over. But IF he does leave, that is not what happened here. I doubt that others on here knew before he did that he was going. JUST BE HONEST. That is the lesson I would think is a priority to teach our kids to do this, ... not by just telling them to be honest and upfront, ... but by showing them thru example. IF he is leaving, he should have done that for all involved.

How much money is enough? He was living better than most and making nice money at Whitley. Its not like he was making minimum wage!!!!!

Of which he has NONE!!!! He definately is all about the money. That is why he mislead so many people. HE wanted those paychecks. He knew that Lonnie Anderson would tell him to go onto Georgia when he told him so he lied, not once but repeatedly everyday.

 

Money is certianly important to me. But my word is my bond and peoples opinions mean something. HE entered into a contract and HE broke it. If what is said here hurts his feeling too bad!!!!!! What about the feelings of the kids that he has lied to repeatedlly everyday.

Well, where should I start.

 

I quit posting several months ago because I felt like I was making so many members mad. I could say that I told you so, but I won't go there.Whitley (Lonnie) was badly misled on this guy. I could really go into details, but then you guys would probably tell me that there is no way this is true, just like you told me about the good coach Gentry.This guy is all about himself and doesn't care who gets in his way. I would hate to think that I could lie to a bunch of young men. Jim Black will do just fine and Mike Campbell will support him 100%.This whole thing has been a joke, but the sad thing is the joke has been on the kids.If you guys need another bottle of ketchup with that crow , let me know

Tell us crow eaters what you know judge. The story will eventually get out any way. It seems that Gentry has burned pretty much everyone he has ever come in contact with. Maybe the hiring committee should have dug a little deeper and talked to a few people that knew him other than his brother in law.

 

I agree with you Jim Black will do a good job but, on the other hand Whitley already had one of the best coaching staffs in the state with Mike Campbell. Whitley will finish 1st or 2nd in their district for the next three years based on the talent Campbell already had in the program.

Hiring committee................The people on that committee don't know what a football looks like . That so called committee was put together for one purpose and that was to hire good ole Gentry. Everybody knew that this guy was leaving weeks ago. He told Lonnie he was staying. He told the kids, radio and the newspapers that he was staying. Georgia will get them a real peach. A rotton one.

But I was trying to give him the benifit of the doubt. I was wrong and you were right but at least they have a coach in place now who will put the kids first.
