Not real prominent on the radar for either one of them in the grand scheme of things. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that things like the economy, unemployment, etc. will be bigger issues.

Mitt Romney, however, judging by his January remark, views stay-at-home moms who are supported by federal assistance much differently than those backed by hundreds of millions in private equity income. Poor women, he said, shouldn't be given a choice, but instead should be required to work outside the home to receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits. "[E]ven if you have a child 2 years of age, you need to go to work," Romney said of moms on TANF.

Recalling his effort as governor to increase the amount of time women on welfare in Massachusetts were required to work, Romney noted that some had considered his proposal "heartless," but he argued that the women would be better off having "the dignity of work" -- a suggestion Ann Romney would likely take issue with.

"I wanted to increase the work requirement," said Romney. "I said, for instance, that even if you have a child 2 years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, 'Well that's heartless.' And I said, 'No, no, I'm willing to spend more giving day care to allow those parents to go back to work. It'll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.'"

Stupid and disappointing thing thing to say, I agree. But now you claim he's out of touch because of one comment? That his character is indeed formed by his wealth? That's all it takes for an informed opinion for you where Romney is concerned? Somehow I think Obama was afforded a better chance than that.

This puts Mitt in the same category on this issue as Rosen. A stupid comment and an attack that's totally uncalled for. He lost points with me to be sure.

That being said, I'll still take him over Obama any day, and I'm not a fan of Romney on gun issues either, but he's not as bad as Obama on that issue either.

Bottom line, I think Romney would do a better job of getting the country back on the right track. President Obama has failed in my eyes on that.

Deduction? It is commonly (and correctly) called the marriage tax penalty.

 

The states and fed tax married individuals more than if they are married since supposedly they combine their income. It is basically an extra tax for the status of being married. Somewhat like discriminating against those that are 'married'.

Simply trying to understand how one can sit here and complain about people taking a tax deduction, when you yourself do so. Seems hypocritcal to me that's all.

 

And to answer your question, no, tax deductions are no where even close to being in the same universe as sitting on your butt all day receiving government handouts.

I've been waiting since this whole issue erupted for someone to bring up Romney's comments on welfare receiving stay at home Moms.

 

What do folks think about every stay at home Mom receiving payment from the federal govt for raising their children? With limits, such as kid has to be attending school 95% of the school days; has to be doing at least B grade work: no juvenile arrests; no discipline problems in school, etc. Is society better off in the long run making sure kids are well parented, and if so, should we be willing to pay to help make that happen?

 

Some South American countries actually pay parents if their kids are successful in grade, middle and high school in order to give previously unconcerned parents an incentive to become concerned about the education of their children. Perhaps if we pay a parent to stay at home and link that payment to certain results we think will ultimately benefit society, we'll save money in the long run?

 

My anti big govt brethren are cursing me for even bringing up the question.:D
