The gun was later recovered using the the video footage from the bystanders and the cops were cleared.

The problem here is, the offenders were brought to "justice", and they were convicted on charges that the family members of the victim agreed to. Did things go wrong? Yes. Are there problems in the US justice system? Yes. The problem here is, the offenders were convicted with charges that the victim's family signed off on. Could the mom have made more noise about the perceived injustice? Maybe.

Come on...the guy shot at the police. What if one of the cops didn't see him ditch his gun? What if the suspect was on his knees and looked to be reaching for something in his pocket after one of the cops didn't see him ditch his gun..and after he had shot at them already? The guy wouldn't have gotten himself into trouble if he hadn't skipped out on his bus fare and he hadn't taken off from the cops and then shot at them.
