North Oldham vs. Waggener MOVED to Thursday night 8/31/17

Recommended Posts

The North Oldham Mustangs - Waggener Wildcats game has been moved to tomorrow night (Thursday) due to the impending weather from the hurricane.

Both teams sit at 0-2 and looking for their first win.

Waggener's advantage would seem to be a group of tremendous athletes. At least three starters are looking at D1 offers, and one, maybe two, are legit Mr. Football candidates. Coach Johnson has fielded back to back winning teams at the St. Matthews school, and despite two lopsided losses to start the season, one should note that their first two opponents were Lexington Christian and Boyle County. I watched the first quarter of the game versus Boyle last week, and Waggener was very competitive (in fact, they were leading).

North, under second-year coach Joe Gamsky, is trying to rekindle the mojo that made them one of the most successful teams in 4A under previous coach Billy Martin, including a run to the 4A semi-finals in 2014, when North came six seconds from playing in the title game. The Mustangs are rebuilding the cupboard, so to speak, as they went through a couple of seasons without the talent that they had enjoyed, and last year they had the added burden of learning a new coaching staff / new system. But they looked a lot better last week in a loss to cross-county rival Oldham County, with the passing game especially clicking. North's advantage in this contest may be numbers; Waggener has a very thin roster. If this game is up for grabs heading into the fourth, North may be the more rested team and have the edge.

Other keys:

North can't become one-dimensional as they did in the second half last week. Although Tanner McCoy ultimately threw for over 200 yards against Oldham County, the Colonel defense was able to adjust and ultimately burned North for two pick-6s that turned the tide of the game. Connor Newhouse and company will have to find a way to churn out some yardage on the ground.
