This Fort Knox team ... there's something about these players that make EVERYTHING different. Nothing is the same as it was last season, or even two years ago in Combs' first year on post.

They are. I've covered this team twice, and they're much improved over last season.

45-27 Mercer. Game started way late -- after 10 -- and didn't end until just after midnight.

The discussion in the Fort Knox-Bethlehem thread got me thinking. If you had to pick your top five or top ten games you've seen, what would they be? Mine: 1. Lexington Catholic beats Franklin County, 44-38 in 2006 playoffs. Flyers led 32-7 at the half, but Catholic rallied to tie and force overtime. Game is tied at 38 after the first OT. Franklin County goes for it on fourth down on its possession in OT 2, but comes up just short. Catholic gets the ball, and IIRC, scores on a fourth-down play to win it. Crazy game. 2. Bethlehem beats Fort Knox, 27-22 on last-second Hail Mary. The way this game ended Friday night still hasn't sunk in. I still don't see how Clay Owens made that catch in the corner of the end zone. I still see the ball floating through the air, the hush of the crowd as the ball comes down and then the roar of the crowd when the head ref signaled touchdown. Holy cow, what an ending. 3. LaRue County beats Green County, 28-27 in 2009. This game was awesome. Back and forth the whole night. I can't remember all the details right now -- maybe because it's 2:30 in the morning, but that was one heckuva game. 4. St. X beats Meade County, 31-3 in 2007 state semis. The atmosphere at this game was incredible. It was freezing cold, but it didn't matter. Both stands -- home and visitor's side -- were absolutely packed. It was awesome standing on the Meade County sideline and seeing a see of green stretched from end zone to end zone behind me. Both crowds were amazing. Meade County, at least in reality, shouldn't have been playing that game the way they started that season (0-3). I remember picking them every week in our paper's weekly picks, but I knew the Wave would get it turned around. And boy, did they ever. 5. Hancock County beats Fort Knox, 80-39 in 2009. This game is up there just because of the way it ended. Fort Knox was down, I think, four touchdowns in the third quarter and rallied to come within a TD. But Hancock pulled away in a big way in the fourth quarter.

This ranks No. 2 in my book. No. 1 is the playoff game between Franklin County and Lexington Catholic from 2006.

Some of the players I talked to after the game said there was some confusion on that last play. I think one said he started cramping up before he tried to make a play on that pass. There's no telling what would have happened had Knox been ready to better defend that pass and the player didn't cramp up.

What I don't understand is the clock was stopped so there really was no rush for Bethlehem to get that play off. Shouldn't the backline ref have been counting players the entire time before the ball was snapped?

I'm still not sure why that flag was thrown so far downfield. The LOS was the 39. Why wasn't it thrown near there?

Quensie Brown did transfer to John Hardin, but Fort Knox also got a solid transfer in Josh Kleber. The backfield, from what coaches and players have told me, shouldn't see much of a drop-off without Brown. I've been on post quite a few times this preseason, and the attitude -- at least within the team -- is much better than it was at this time last year. This team thinks it can win, which is a mindset last year's team didn't have until the end of the year. Things are indeed different on post. I just don't know if that will translate to on the field, but I'm optimistic it will. I'm taking Knox in a close one, 35-28.

The 365 kid Jeb mentioned transferred from North Hardin Christian, which just started its football team in 2007 but won't play this season due to scheduling conflicts. The kid is an absolute monster, at least size-wise, and can open some pretty big holes for Meade's backs to get through.

Didn't County just get new uniforms in 2006, or had those been around for a while before I started working in Frankfort?

The Grid was fun to watch when I was in Frankfort. And do bring a lawn chair to Leathers because there are no bleachers. Also, have fun parking in that neighborhood where Leathers is located.

Can you change the spelling to Meade?

When I was last at LexCath in the fall for middle school football semis, they had a banner hanging just before you got to the bleachers that said they're redoing the baseball complex and installing new turf on the football field. I know the baseball field has been in need of repair for quite a while, and they're supposedly putting more than $1 million toward that facility.

Are the officials from the 11th Region? I thought when it came to region tourneys that the refs were from different regions? Regardless, there's no way that call should have been blown. The refs had the aid of the red light on EKU's backboard, and didn't use it. Watched the game cast on CKYsports.com, and it was clearly good. Holy cow.

Anyone got any new info on this job?

Wow is all I can say. Was listening to the game on the way back from covering the North Hardin-Fort Knox boys' basketball game when it was 7-0. By the time I got back to E'town it was 21-0 and Highlands was rolling. Congrats on No. 19, and congrats to John Hardin on a great season.

Why did Highlands and Ryle play twice this season? The KHSAA has Highlands beating Ryle 37-14 on Aug. 28 and 31-14 on Oct. 30.
