Just since Thanksgiving day, less than 2 weeks. He played in their first scrimmage then got injured at practice Thanksgiving day.

You are right, Cumberland and Corbin have both had key parts missing these first 2 weeks, but I believe Cumberland might be getting Brock Leisge back this week. It will be interesting to see when Josh Crawford will be ready to get back in action for Corbin.

It looks like there will be some good competitive games in the 13th Region All A this year with the likes of Cumberland, Pineville, Middlesboro, Lynn Camp, Barbourville, and Red Bird to mention a few. Lynn Camp must do some serious running and gunning, but it doesnt sound like anyone in the gym played any defense in this one.

I caught a little of the first half on the radio and Cawood was up 6 at halftime. I only caught the last few seconds of the 2nd half and I do know that with 4 or 5 seconds left and the Tigers up 2 Garrett Clark hit 2 clutch free throws to seal the deal and it sounded like he had a good game.

I would have thought Cawood would win this one at home.

Cumberland could have a really tough test Saturday at Shelby Valley H.S. against Perry County Central. The Skins do not have all of their key parts right now and it is early. Their best basketball will come when everyone gets healthy and they get a few games under their belt together.

You make a lot of good points here Bubba, but I would not be able to agree with you on Barbourville being the best single A school over the last 20 years. Harlan would have to get that nod with some of the tremendous teams they have had. They won an AAU State Championship, 2 All A State Championships, 2 or 3 trips to Rupp Arena with one ending in the final 4, not to mention a top 20 National Ranking and a Mr Basketball (Charles Thomas) who was raised in the Cumberland (Tri-City area) before moving to Harlan just before his 8th grade year. Having said that, I do get your point about a lot of schools having their ups and downs and the cycles of athletes, with certain programs such as Clay County, Corbin, South Laurel and Harlan being more consistent than most. I think the successes of these schools have been part of the inspiration for the special group of kids at Cumberland that have been together for 3 years now, with the exception of Wilson who has been with them for 2 years. They have followed the lead of these schools with their year round dedication to the game and it is really starting to show.

What is it with guys like you that keep saying things like "if anyone thinks South will be a walk in the park they will get fooled". I dont recall anyone ever saying that they are anything other than a very solid program with excellent coaching and a lot of good athletes to choose from, but they just dont seem to have the same quality basketball players this year that they have had over the last 3 or 4 years, which is clearly true. This fact , however doesnt make anyone feel like they will be an easy victory for anyone in this region or any region, so relax a little and enjoy the season sir.

Middlesboro has some good talent and will be a formiddable foe this year for anyone in the 13th Region and can play with Corbin with or without Crawford

From what I saw of Williamsburg last year I just dont see how they could be considered a very strong team at all this year. This is a decent win for South but not something that you can actually gauge what they can do with the top teams. Williamsburg may win 7 to 10 games depending on what kind of schedule they have. South does a good job of taking a 20 point win and making a 30 point plus win out of it due to the numbers of athletes they have, compared to a team like Cumberland that dominates a game then once they go to their bench past 7 or 8 guys they get outscored 8 or 10 points in the last 2 minutes of the game and win by only 15. I doubt very seriously that South dominated Williamsburg any more than Cumberland dominated Barbourville, but they win by 32 and Cumberland wins by 15 and didnt even have their guard (Leisge) that was rated by the 13th Region coaches one of the top 10 players in the Region

Cumberland looked very strong, just like they did in the summer as they competed with some of the best in the state advancing to the final 4 of the state aau tournament. I think I mentioned a few months ago that Wilson would be one of the top 2 power forwards in the 13th Region along with Nick Brumback, and he definitely showed what he is capable of doing last night. When they get their point guard (Leisge) back next week some of the young kids will have gotten some valuable experience that will be very beneficial for their growth, and when they get everyone clicking together, they could be a very complete and very dangerous team in the months ahead.

Cumberland played without their point guard (Brock Leisge) I think he may have sprained his knee in practice and might be out for a week or two.

WOW, what a great game!!!! Cumberland, IMO played their most impressive game of the year, going toe to toe with the #1 ranked team in the state and really had a great chance to win. They were focused on the task at hand, fought and battled and showed a lot of heart for 4 quarters. As a Tri-City and Harlan County resident I couldnt be more proud of an athletic team than I was last night.

If Cumberland comes mentally and physically focused and maintains the same level of focus for 4 quarters, they have the talent to make this a great game and possibly win, but if they play like they have many times this year (one solid half and one awful half) they could get beat badly. I am hoping that part of the reason for that has been immaturity, with several of their key players being pretty young. Maybe these young guys have grown up enough to bring it tonight. Good luck Skins, represent the Tri-Cty area with all you have!!!!

Good job Evarts coming ready to play in the first half. Hazard's talent a little too much in the second half it appears. Those boys from Evarts always come prepared to battle and there are probably a lot of coaches in the mountains will attest to that.

Cumberland's QB Blanton went out with an injury in the 1st quarter, but dont know how serious it is. He came out after the half with his pads off, I hope he is OK, he had been playing well for the Skins the last couple games.

Cumberland-53 Jenkins-14 with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Gilliam and Simmons running wild on the Cavs, they probably have 350 yards rushing between them. Mostly subs playing for the Skins.

Once again, as many have already said Wright is a great coach and South will have a solid team, but there will be a couple teams (I think we know who those 2 are) that will be better than them and 6 or 7 other teams that could possibly beat them. As for the Gilbert kid, I dont know if I have ever seen him so I cant even comment on him, but as for St John he might be a manchild in size but not necessarily in athelticism and skills and he is only a sophomore, so Wright it would appear has his work cut out for him. They do however have a nice program and quality coaching as I have said many times before.

Very good point home field is huge, with the home team having a big advantage in games where talent levels are fairly close.

Clark was back in action last night and had 7 carries for 43 yards. He has been missed on both sides of the ball since early in the Hazard game, hopefully if the skins can take care of business against Jenkins and he get another full game under his belt he will be near 100% and a big boost for Cumberland in a rematch with Hazard. If the Skins mentally and physically bring it like they did in the first half last night they are a formiddable team that could be a tough out in the playoffs for anyone. It will be interesting to see if Cumberland can be mentally focused enough to put two good halves together in the playoffs.

Steve Wright is clearly the most decorated coach and IMO he is the best head coach in the Region and he has some very good basketball people around him assisting him. As for the rest of the Region it would be wide open for discussion and opinions would greatly vary, with really no one having near the credentials Wright has. As for Edwards of Cumberland, he has only 3 years of head coaching experience at the H.S. level of which have produced some pretty darn impressive results and he, like Wright has some excellent basketball people assisting him in Derek Akal and Greg Creech with Akal arguably being one of the best players ever at Cumberland in the early 80's and one of the toughest. Akal has been a great teacher of tough, hard nosed defensive minded basketball at Cumberland and is a tremendous asset to the Cumberland staff along with Creech. So, where they rank in the Region is really hard to say, but their body of work over the last 3 to 4 years is something that does deserve some credit. A good win on the road for the Skins, they came out ready to play and seemed to be determined to put last week's poor performance behind them and make a statement going into the playoffs.
