How can you compare opponents' records, and what does that reveal? JC's average score against its opponents, including two 4A schools, is 48-9. JC has given up only 3 first-half TDs through 7 games, and one of those was on a kick-off return. The Tomcats haven't cracked 40 once all year. Ashland, if you compare their opponents, with say, Pikeville, then you're looking at two comparable teams and the nod probably has to go to the Panthers because they seem to have a better defense. That makes about as much sense as your convoluted analysis. Keep it up though. Central can never get too much motivation.

North Laurel, Bryan Station, the South Point JC played, would IMO all beat Ashland. Look at the competition those teams have played.

Part of the reason JC's opponents have such a "stellar" record is because JC is responsible for 7 of those losses. Ashland's key Putnam wins came against good 2A teams, but not great teams, and teams I believe Johnson Central would easily beat. Central could have beaten Paintsville 100-0 tonight. Midway through the second quarter, up 49-0, Coach Matney showed his class rather discreetly, by experimenting with the pass, containment D, holding Grim back, etc.

Absolutely. Two or three series of handoffs, and maybe a quick pass or two. I agree its very important to have a rythem and a feel before Ashland. Otherwise, I think it would be better to let him come off the bench against Ashland.

You're right. Matney would never do that. I've always heard he likes to stop at 69, and that is class. The 70 against Logan last year was crazy, because he needed all 70. Personally, I don't have as much class and would like to see 120.

I totally agree. A couple days ago I merely called the guy at the other extreme...that Covington Cath or Highlands would beat Johnson Central by 100 if they wanted. That's just as crazy. Central has a long way to go. If They are fortunate enough to win the district then win their first 2 playoff games at home, then they'll host probably Bell or Rock. If they're fortunate enough to win that one, they'll probably host Highlands or Covington Cath. 100-point win? Hopefully we'll find out.

I'll take that bet, and bet the farm. Hopefully one or the other can come to Johnson Central late in November and show us how to get slapped around like the Cincinnati teams slap the big, powerful NKy programs around. Those scores don't strike much fear.

Exactly. And if there's a positive to JK's loss, its confirmation that we're deep with talent and adequate leadership at the QB position. That gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling...no, that's just the cat rubbing up against my leg...

I don't know if its justification, but IMO I think Corbin would beat at least 3 or4 top 10 teams. That's how I get 6 or 7.

Congratulations to Ashland. Great win on the road against a decent Prestonsburg team that had some carry-over issues from last year (a mutual feeling, as I recall). Dropping this game is probably a good idea, at least for a year or two, and if nothing else, for a cooling off thing. Maybe Prestonsburg can fill the vacancy with Johnson Central next year. Everyone will be looking for games under the new class system, and it could develop into a healthy, natural, mutually rewarding game for both schools.

Not technically Mountain top 10, but Montgomery over Madison Central made me go wash my face and put my glasses on.

Central has missed 2 or 3 key players every game too. Hopefully we'll meet again, and leave, full strength. Lots of empathy and perspective left on the field tonight. No fights, no rednecks (except the loser in the endzone that cost Lawrence 15 yards on the kickoff...(close the bridge to Fort Gay on game day?) and the uniformed gutless police officer who obviously served no purpose), and thanks to the 99.9% of Lawrence County fans, a friendly "rivalry" game you can take the whole family to. Class act by both teams and fans. Hope we can do it again next year, and every year. Pretonsburg and Belfry would be nice too.

Man, Southwestern has had peaks and valleys this season. Obviously, Highlands was going to win this game , but trying to predict outcomes based on prior scores this season is a coin flip. How does Southwestern beat Clark County, who blasted a pretty decent Bryan Station, who demolished an average Madison Southern, who were edged by North Laurel, who taught South Laurel there are 2 halves, who beat Corbin, who took traditional 3A powers Rockcastle and Bell County to the wire, and so on...? Did Highlands pick up a couple Bengals at PBS last weekend?

High School football is as much fun as a kid can legally have. Basketball may be faster and just as exciting, but football is a true lesson in life. It makes men out of boys, but because its the only sport where the oponent is physically out for your head, it carries greater risks. The players and coaches understand and accept that. The outpouring of support many of us saw at the E.R. door across from the parking lot may be the silver lining for this team, which I predict will step up, rally, and succeed at making something good happen out of a bad situation.

I can see Greenup finishing second in the district.

The top 5 look great; after that, there are 10 or 12 teams deserving. IMO, Corbin at 1-4 is at least 6 or 7. Watch this team make some big time noise from here on out. "Wake up Uhmeuricuh!"

To be fair to LC's spirited effort, Central moved many starters in and out the whole second half. The secondary, for the most part, played the whole game. The defensive line and linebackers were substituted freely, but I never saw a down where there weren't 3 or 4 defensive starters in. Personally, I think Central just wanted the game over, after the last injury. Lawrence, on the other hand, had something and someone (well, three to be exact) to play for, and I'm very happy for them that it was 55-12 and not 70-0. After the long injury delay, players were given 3 minutes to warm up. Louisa did it as a "team"; Central had a few offensive players casually stretching. That was very telling, and I'm glad no Central players were injured from sitting around so long. Resuming at full speed while you're cold is a good way to pull a hammy, or worse.
