Here's some numbers from the Archdiocese Website In the 2006-2007 school year, there were 12304 students in Jefferson County Archdiocesean schools grades k-8. If half of these are boys then there are potentially 6000 boys to feed into the 4 catholic high schools in the 9 grades. Divide 6000 by 9 and you get 666 boys per grade or 2666 per 4 grades. Currently the enrollments are St X 1439, Trinity 1358, Desales 276 and half of the coed Holy Cross at 154 (308 total) That's 3226 currently in school. There's the plus factors of Indiana schools and the counties around Jefferson county in Kentucky but you also have the minus factors of the public schools. It would be interesting to have historical data but I think you can see that X, T, DeSales and Holy Cross have to keep every single male in the feeder system plus attract 600 kids from the public schools and surrounding areas to keep the current enrollments. I think that the current enrollments of St Raphael, Agnes, Stephen Martyr, Ascension, Notre Dame and Athanasius have all fallen below 500 and some below 400. Large East end parishes such as Gabriel, Patrick, Holy Trinity, Margaret Mary and Albert are all over 675 students along with a growing St Michael at 476 reflect the east ward moving population of Jefferson County catholics. It doesn't bode well for the west end schools, then X, then Trinity. Yes, travel costs could squeeze the middle class students to the nearest public school.

Good points Park. Also remember that Deuce is an excellent receiver-especially deep. It has been two years but he did catch a TD against Male in the mud in the last regular season game on a play action to him and then he goes deep. On the interception in OT in the state game, the fake is to Deuce and he goes through and is sitting wide open in the end zone. Expect a big year running and receiving.

Not to throw a wrinkle into it but remember that D J Hall ran a little quarterback freshmen year. What about that option? Then it becomes Finch, Beech or Hall?

I think that the process is taking place right now the the core group of Catholic middle income families are taking a long look at Manual and Ballard. I am not talking about the low income Catholic or non Catholic available for financial aid. I am talking about the people that are looking at spending $40K over four years. I fully expect 3 things to happen in the next 5 years 1) enrollment will drop at both X and T to a 1200 or less level. 2) Manual will get a ring from a team of 25% CSAA graduates. 3) Further consolidation of the Catholic Archdiocese schools creating a smaller pool of students. As grade school costs continue to rise, more transfers to the traditional programs at Male, Butler and Waggoner. This is about 8 years out.

Overcoming injuries was key in 2007. This may be another thread but may be pertinent here. Because of the freedom of information act, any coach that applies in Cininnati would be subject to their name being posted in the newspaper. So let's say that a coach at a rival school did want the Butler job but wanted to keep it on the lowdown- no can do. If someone informed can confirm, can the interviewees list be retrieved at any public school here in Kentucky?

How about Kamber CB Starter ? Galbraith CB Leader Interceptor 2007? Can someone fill me in on Bickel? Dorsey? Karrer? as to size and type of player. What about the 6'9 400 lb transfer that runs a 4.6? JK What does St X need to do? Keep on winning "meaningless" games in front of 38000 potential students and let the rest take care of itself. The eighth graders in fall 2005 made their choice- they will be juniors this year coming up-the cream will rise.

. This is not an anti Beatty message. What I am saying is coaching is not the way to even out 6A, Beatty is a great coach, but Lampley was a great coach, Servino was a great coach and I think Kevin Wright was a good coach. Trinity has won state titles before Beatty and they will win them after he's gone but coaching is just one factor but Male, Manual, Ballard, X are not going to hire Lampley, Servino, Beatty and Wright and beat Trinity. Even if they had, would the titles had changed? I think you look at other factors to even out 6A. I point to enrollment growth with no new private High School Catholic schools built in the last 35 years after Flaget closed. Tell that to Oldham and Boone County as they split talent every 5 years with each new school. Imagine if Oldham County only had 1 team. Once again, more good players make better teams. I don't know why that is so tough to admit. X had 3 starters that I knew that lived outside of Jefferson County. 1 from Oldham and 2 from Indiana. Imagine if Oldham county was removed from Trinity High School not just Trinity football team? What would the enrollment be? Not to mention Indiana and Franklin County?

I find it funny that the same mantra about coaching and the system. Does anyone remember what makes good coaches? Good players and plenty of them. This woe is me, I have no talent is contrasted by the 18 players listed on the Trinity website (http://www.thsrock.net) playing college football plus it doesn't include Blayne Donnell, Steve Orndorf, and Dane Spoelker plus any others that aren't listed.That's at least 21 college players- not too shabby for a non talented team. Add in future alumni players to Florida, Ohio State, and U of L from this years team and the talent argument pales in front of the reality of more players means more wins for X and T. Against teams your size this year, you went 1-2 for the season. Combine Bowling Green and Highlands' enrollment together and then see what kind of team 1400 male students produce.

Just a note that Mercy beat Assumption in volleyball last year in the regular season. Assumption still won the state but look for the Bobcats to "even it out" in years to come after their move. As to the South End, I agree that maybe they need the school to attend but the facility at Holy Cross has to be under utilized. I wonder if the Archdiocese of Louisville ever looked at selling that facility for a large profit and building new on the east side? I think Holy Cross's enrollment is less than 250 for both boys and girls. If you get 600 students in the east end, I wonder how the financials work out for a potential move? What about Flaget East High School?

Here's a couple of additions. The offensive line should be solid with 3 returning letterman including 6'5 325 Seth Harvey. ON the defensive line, let's not forget Trevor Foy and John Taylor to go along with Brutscher. Michael McCormick filled in nicely at LB when Devine and Heuser were injured early. In the defensive backfield, Zach Kamber and Sam Galbraith started and led the team in interceptions last year respectively and Patrick Kilkelly and Chase Carraro got time also. Aaron Botner rotated in every 3 plays at WR and caught a TD in the state final game. Don't be surprised to see D J Hall on the offensive side with some time at receiver. Jake Meredith can add some talent at the TE position along with Chris Esterle. As to the QB position, let's not forget that Matt Brutscher finished the win againt Trinity in the regular season and started the next four games- all wins. He is generally unflappable in the huddle. Brian Buehner has great leadership skills and will get a chance to prove himself this year. Think how defenses will play St X next year with Finch in the backfield. The play action pass will be huge. This years team was 32 seconds away from perfection-next years team should continue the winning ways. Here's a different angle on your point. While Oldham County and Boone County are building schools, Trinity and X have stayed in a growth pattern while Desales and Holy Cross have had reduced attendence while Male has changed their policy on admissions to only allow Traditional program kids over the last 5 years. So the available Catholic school kid pool has grown plus the public school including Oldham County pool has grown that will consider T or X. So let's take a talented kid who goes to St Rita on Preston highway in Okolona across from Southern high School. Previously, Southern was a power and he could of gone there but currently it's not his first choice. He wasn't in the the traditional program so Male is out. His parents are not wealthy so he applies to X and Trinity and receives reduced tuition offer. So his choice is Manual or T or X. Now his best friend goes to TT Knight, a public school off Blue Lick road in the neighborhood. They talk, the 2nd kid takes the test at T or X and gets a reduced scholarship offer based on financial need. Now there's two kids going to T or X or Manual. How do you even up 6A? Move Desales or Holy Cross to the east end of Louisville and build a third power to start eroding the pool. Fern Creek, J-Town, Seneca, Southern, and Oldham CounT has 1400 students X has 1400 students. Divide 2800 by 3 and now the numbers become 933 at each school. Coach Maddox from Trinity used to coach at J-Town and he used the stat that 3000 kids from J-towns district attend other schools. If a school could start getting those kids, then the field evens out. But as it stands right now, as long as Fern Creek, J-Town, Seneca, Southern are losing kids in their area to T and X, the titles will continue.

Actually he should of dropped the ball so X could of given the ball to Deuce 2 more times like they should of ( 6.2 per carry)or throw it wide like they scored two touchdowns!!! Just a theory but maybe the AP voters thought it was a no doubter except for the 3 people that voted for someone other than Robinson. I have no facts to back it up but maybe the 15 or so who didn;t vote didn't think it was worth the time, Maybe BGP should take it over. Once again, just a theory.

In summary, Ky schools need better games. A good point was brought up about the financial burden. What if double headers were set up at some of the larger stadiums? For example, Male and Manual Stadium, X's stadium, and Marshall Stadium ( T) all hold over 5000 and do a great job hosting toy bowls and jamborees all day long. While playing at papJohns is nice, I think having a Louisville team host the teams at their facilities and eat at the cafeterias would cut the expenses down. Basketball and Baseball has the LIT and maybe the big four play at home against a power and host another school and call it the LIT. I know Male has hosted the Border wars games before and Manual allows Desales to play there but I believe X and Trinity have never allowed 2 high school teams to play on their field. Maybe have X and T play back to back and alternate the years. One thing I remember when X lost to Moeller at Paul Brown Stadium was the Elder cheering section coming in for their game against Highlands Chanting "GCL, GCL" during the end of the Moe- X game. Imagine having X play at Trinity against "INSERT OUT of STATE POWER NAME". Would the Trinity fans show up early and cheer for X? (I didn't hear Highlands' fans pulling for X either! What happened with Tony Danza's project?

My comment is the lack of games against the GCL and Tennessee schools hurts in getting prepared for the GCL and the Tennessee schools. My other point is as long as T views the out of state games as "preparation" games, then the other Ky schools needs to step up and beat the teams to uphold and further Ky football. If UK can beat the national champions with a kid from Manual at WR, and a QB from North Hardin, along with a host of other players from Bluegrass Nation, then why can't we beat ( not compete!) the best regional teams in high school? Is it facilities? Is it coaching? Is it the pre-high school development programs? Is it talent? (Couch, Redman, Lorenzen, Brohm, Woodson, Bush at QB in the last few years,etc) Is it the use of two way players versus 22 starters? Or maybe we just don't believe we can beat them.

That's exactly my point. We send an admittably "not as good" representative for the state and Kentucky looks bad. Thus the comment about the "glass ceiling". At least Trinity scheduled one out of state game. I guess what I'm discussing is why not send a good representative, either Trinity later in the season or any of the other top schools at their peak time to get some Ky wins? District games are weeks 5, 7, and 9. How about weeks 6, or 8? What? Gotta rest for that big district game against Butler and/or Seneca in week 7? Hogwash!! Guru makes a good point about comparable teams to Highlands. Ky schools don't necessarily have to play GCL schools. Why can't a Manual or Male go play a team like Colerain, or the 5A champion Anderson to find out how a public school can be more successful ? I guess the final question is why do we accept that a 1400-1500 student all male catholic high school can't compete with a GCL school? Only one GCL school is that size now. It seems like we are sounding like our public school brethren and believing we can't compete and they have advantages. I guess they "just work harder".

I guess that's really my point. I don't want the Kentucky champion to have 2 losses and one being to an out state team. The headline from a Cincinnati website was" Ho Hum, Another Week Another State Champion. " When did we become happy with "It was a lot closer than the final score!" As much as we point to the 2002 win against Elder, that is GONE from the outsiders memory. We have to go back 5 years to get a signature win.( My apologies to the Highland crew- Trotwood Madison was good but not a signature win!) As you look at the top 6 or so programs, Trinity played one game against an out of state opponent, X played none, Male played none, Manual played none, Highlands played 1, Henry Clay played 1, Bowling Green 0.The games against out of state teams create the impression of the whole state and as I see it, KY went 1-2 against out of state in showcase games in 2007. I know the 2007 schedule had to be put together quickly and 2008 is already booked. I hope with the realignment that will free up the top schools to schedule and WIN over other states.

First of all, congrats to Trinity in winning the first 6A championship in football. But as I read the rankings of other top comparable programs in other states, does having Trinity as the top team in Kentucky provide a glass ceiling for the rest of the teams in Kentucky? For example, do the people in Ohio view all teams in Kentucky to be less than Trinity even though Highlands went 15-0 but since Cincinnati St X beat Trinity and Highlands is in a lower division than Trinity then Highlands isn't as highly regarded across the river? I know the comments were made of a 5-5 LaSalle beating Henry Clay backed up those claims. Do the teams in Tennessee view less of the Ky schools because of Montgomery Bell's wins over Trinity? So in 2006 if Male had completed their trek to the state final, would Male be viewed regionally and nationally on par with MBA? Trinity finished the final polls at 23rd in the USA Today poll as the only 2 loss team in the Top 25. Would Kentucky been served better if a different outcome in the final would of put a team in the top 15, maybe top 10 in the nation? Would that allowed some consideration to have gone to Highlands at 15-0? Your thoughts?

CAL isn't in the all A. Collegiate would be the favorite at 5-6.

I totally agree about Weitlauf except for Heuser. Better football player than Whiting.
