That question is answered every year by the players who choose DeSales, Holy Cross, and in some ways Christian Academy. Desales went 10-3 this year and they advertise that every freshman will get to play in varsity game if you go there. Accordingly to the KHSAA site, they had 66 players this year, Holy Cross had 48 and Christian Academy had 49. For those outside Louisville, Southeast Christian Church is probably the largest ex-Catholic collection of people and it is located in the growing East End side of Louisville. It is a growing power in the making and fast forward 10-15 years and we'll be talking about a third private school football power. It is about location and the ability to play right away. Throw in comparable campus and facilities and the amount of new affluent houses around the campus and expect a transfer of power. Tradition only goes so far as Notre Dame has found out in the last decade. One last point- Saint X and Trinity tuition- $9225 per year Desales $8290 Christian Academy $6915. So playing time and $2300 a year?

But a Hoosier intercepted the pass in OT last year in the Kentucky State 6A final for Trinity. Did any reporters bring that up in the newspaper article. So what is bigger-the state final or individual awards? I think most of us agree it is the state final. Is there anyone on BGP that didn't know Deuce grew up in Indiana? What bothers me is Deuce has had to carry this collar that he is from Indiana, similar to the basketball players from about 10-15 years ago that used to be the Proposition 48 players, who didn't qualify academically freshmen year but based on grades, were admitted because they played basketball. Many became good students but were still referred to as Prop 48 players their senior years. If you Google Deuce Finch, you get 56,000 hits. If you cut out the rivals.com and scout.com hits and read the articles about him, almost every one mentions him as an Indiana resident in it. Did LARRY TAUGHER get that much press when he played in Indiana because he grew up in Kentucky? Deuce is a fine young man who has carried this perceived albatross as well as a person can. As to whether Tim Phillips deserved this award, I certainly believe he deserved to be at least a finalist. If anyone has certain knowledge, was he nominated for the award or do you have to be nominated? Did the nomination of Jordan Whiting( probably the best defensive player without question) hurt TP's chances to be voted in because the perception that JW may be a better player so you can't vote for TP? I really don't know why someone who has dominated in the playoffs and regular season can't make the top 10 unless he wasn't nominated. I will beg to differ that he faced stiffer competition because he never faced Trinity! Now if anyone wants to make the argument that other teams were better than T....!!

Agreed on the cheap shot. For those who know Deuce and his family, Kentucky can not be represented better by a person who demonstrates all that a student athlete should be. As the son of a teacher, he embraces the academic side and has excelled in it at St X. Many top athletes have dedicated their entire college choice based on football while Deuce has explored Stanford and Boston College and other top schools based on the academic offerings. 2 Things- Deuce lives closer to St X than 75% of the entire St X student population and it is a local call to his house. It is sickening that the amount of press he has gotten in the public private debate as the poster child. He went to an Louisville archdiocese parish, played football in the CSAA, represented New Albany in the Babe Ruth World Series, comes from a strong two-parent family background, achieves academically and is a good teammate and fine young man. Thank you Deuce for your contribution to Kentucky High School Football.

Hats off to the Rocks on another big time performance when they needed to shine. Jordan Whiting with 13 tackles and 2 sacks- at halftime. TP with the game clinching TD and first down. I thought the Tigers were going to tie it back up but they couldn't get it done. Good touch of sportsmanship displayed by Scott Radcliff consoling his grade school buddy from Ascension Sam Galbraith and JW coming over and talking to Deuce and DJ Hall. For the Rocks players and coaches, congrats on the victory and the class. Everybody on the Rock side should be proud of how the players represented themselves. For the Taco Bell Fan of the week group, remember that you are representing your school, too.

Great post. I also thought that when I read Coach Beatty's comments, that I was impressed that he protected his players and I was impressed by this comment. There are comments by our general that I hear that I go with on faith and when I hear another generals comments, I normally look at it with cynicism but I have to admit that I really liked how Coach Beatty phrased this. He showed a side that we don't get to see on the Gold side very often. Hats off to him.

The greatest team banner has been offered by no St X supporter. The Tigers have had many running clocks this year, their games are over early allowing us to ride home and listen. The Trinity broadcast team had some great insight. They mentioned that Coach Beatty and Coverdale can scheme the offense and defense all they want but the players must step up to the challenge. It's no secret what X will do and who they will run. In the playoff games in the past, we may have strayed off that. This team is more versatile team that can throw the ball and has thrown the ball. The special teams mentioned above has been superb and will show again.

Can't disagree with that strategy of 4 times to Deuce. I would even tell the Trinity defense the snap count. Won't go to OT, unless it rains! Hey I'm kidding. Ease up. Just one question- how many times did we (X) score by pass in the final versus running the ball? Take what is given-but you know it wasn't my favorite target!! Answer: 3 by pass, 1 by run. And if Aaron Knotts takes off his glove like the other 3 times we ran the play, 4 TD's by pass. The WR was WIDE OPEN! But that was last year. LEAVE NO DOUBT! BTW-if you have the film, which I'm am sure every Shamrock fan has on their DVD/VCR, watch Deuce on the interception play. If the QB throws to Finch after the fake, he is wide open. We threw that alot in 7 on 7 but not in the regular season. But hopefully no IF's this year.

I would take the optimist winner easily over the Toy Bowl ( except St Patrick this year) winners but the optimist and the muhammed ali league go to 20 different schools. The toy bowl winners and the other best athletes on the 79 football teams in the CSAA all go to T and X except a few to Manual, Desales and Holy Cross. Male has closed the path for non traditional students and the other schools are not getting enough to make an impact. Think about that number- 79 teams spanning 6 grades. each team with about 20 kids. 1580 kids split by the 6 grades = 263 kids coming out each year with pretty good coaching, split between 2 schools primarily. Or roughly the 130 kids for each freshmen class. Add in some public school kids who ONLY want a good education and you can see the main reason why. Cincinnati has about the same size metro area but it is split 4 major ways( St X, Elder, Lasalle and Moeller) and 3 smaller school in Bacon, Purcell, and McNicholas. Plus Kentucky student athletes are not allowed to play for an Ohio school. So with the exception of St X, the 3 remaining schools have about 900-1000 kids. They still dominate the football.

Here's the thing-the Rocks players will be thinking about the 2008 game. To quote the Trinity broadcast team" St X physically manhandled the Rocks and Coach Beatty accused them of being soft." Don't jump me- talk to Wayne and Company. That is different than years past. I think it ends Friday night. If it does, add football to golf, soccer and the runner up in cross country this fall for the Tigers in 2008.

It is finally here. Wow-suffering for 51 weeks and now a chance at redemption. T's offense has really turned it up a notch since the earlier meeting. For one team, the careers end Friday night. Thanks for the memories on both sides. How many turnovers did T have against Eastern? 5? T can't do that and keep it close on Friday. By the way, Deuce is healthy and cutting well. Prediction later this week after somebody says something inflammatory!

If someone can talk about the fumbles, were these early in the game when it counted or the 5th string fullback fumbles. I see where Brutscher threw for a lot of yards. I guess the stacking of the line won't work.

I just have a feeling that this will be a 10-14 point game. As hard as it to believe, I thought that Ballard had some talent in their opening game against St X. They beat Male, Manual, and PRP, and lost by 7 to Eastern. Then they lose big to St X, Trinity, and also lose to Fern Creek. Ballard has a Jeckyl- Hyde trait to them. It may be interesting to see which one shows up this week.

I like this method plus one more thing. 3 teams qualify per district, District winner has first week off. That makes round one #2 versus #3 or 7-3 teams versus 5-5 teams. Winner of round one gets another district winner ( not their own ) Does anyone doubt that most years Eastern, Ballard and Manual could go far if they don't run into St X or Trinity the first or second round.
