  1. What about Beechwood since they had all the finals in a row? Who was the QB for NewCath in 84, 85, 86 when they last made three finals in a row? I have a program from the Finals from last year and if I can find it I'll look stuff up. They have boxscores of all the finals.
  2. Not a surprise. Brossart is young and not going to be a top team this year. Ludlow is solid and, depending on the draw, make a run similar to last year in the 9th region All-A. Right now they have to be considered one of the top contenders.
  3. Well lets see. I was touting this LCA team as a possible true state contender back in the begining of the year but some injuries and a loss to Corbin and Breathitt (who we all later realize were pretty good teams) kind of got LCA off the radar. Now they have put themselves back on the screen, with great showings in the playoffs. Beechwood to me is a little inconsistant this year, but when they are "on" they are better than anyone in Class A. Question is can they be on for an entire game versus LCA? Beechie fans will even admit they have experienced some bad quarters this year versus teams not nearly as good as LCA. Bottom line is Beechwood might be favorite but this LCA team is quite capable of winning especially if Beechwood is not executing well. I expect Beechwood and LCA to both move the ball and this one might be one sort of similar to last years Class A game with both teams putting up some points.
  4. No they haven't but as you go up the ladder it becomes harder and harder to come back on teams. Of course, come to play a full game and you eliminate that. Just think how dangerous this NCC team could be playing with a lead. Two years ago that Breds team came out of the gates ready to play in the playoffs and you could see the devasating results of a great team getting a lead.
  5. Depends on what NewCath team shows up and when. If the "first-half fumbling/interception team" shows up they could be buried by half time. If the "second half run it, pass it, you can't stop us" team shows up maybe before halftime for once they could be well on the way to three in a row. While we haven't seen their A game for 4 quarters yet, we haven't seen their F game for more than 2 quarters and either could happen on Saturday. It will be the first time in a while that NewCath isn't out-sized on the lines like they have been against Corbin and DeSales and actually add in Beechwood and Campbell Co right before that, but I don't know if that is a good thing or not.
  6. Actually is very sound strategy to find a skill player that can long-snap because the center cannot be hit. Maybe not your starting QB but a wide receiver or running back is a weapon that can get down the field. The hit Kues laid on the punt returner was wowzer. The PA annoucer never gave him credit because he probably thought wait that can't be the QB nailing that guy I must have saw the wrong number.
  7. Wow how must Turpin feel? Had Anderson down the whole game when those two rivals met earlier in the playoffs only to have Anderson win on the final drive.
  8. Disaster first half again for Newcath. Stopped DeSales 3 and out and then promptly fumbled on a 4th and 1 just past midfield. DeSales would move the ball well in the first half but did miss a short field goal with the score 3-3. NewCath fumbled 3 times and threw 1 INT in the first half. Fumbled on the 2 just near the end of the first half tied at 3. Stopped DeSales and returned the punt to the Desales 30 yard line with a 1:11 left and a TO. Threw a pass over the middle that went off receivers hands and caught by DeSales. Lucky to get out alive in the first half. Second half Kues and Kelly ran the ball well and often. Defense put DeSales in unwanted down and distance and picked off passes. Breds score in first half last two games (Opposition 19 Breds 10) Breds score in the second half last two games (Breds 49 Opposition 0)
  9. Well they appear to be a solid contender in the 10th region All-A based on Brossart beating Silver Grove soundly, St. Pats beating St. Henry, and St. Henry beating Brossart. Lots of b-ball to be played.
  10. Wow, guess St. Pats is really solid. 10th region All-A should be interesting and I guess the 9th will be too.
  11. Holy Cross should win. NewCath will be missing 3-4 players (2 starters a center and a forward) due to football.
  12. NewCath played Ryle and Lloyd on grass. That was their only games on grass this year. Of course their practice field is most likely one of the worse grass/mud surfaces you could find.
  13. If I were Lloyd I would just go for a completely different staff. No offense to anyone currently in the program, but sometimes it is best for all to just move in a different direction. Seems things have been in a state of confusion for some time now there.
  14. From Ryan Ernst (Enquirer) blog: Apparently the state's coaches aren't real thrilled with the new postseason format -- now in its second year -- that pits district rivals against one another in the first two rounds of the playoffs. From Mike Fields (Lex Herald): If your satellite dish delivered nothing but reruns tonight -- almost 100 in all -- it certainly wouldn't rate as must-see TV. That's what Kentucky high school football is delivering tonight in the first round of the newly expanded playoffs. Nothing but reruns. We've seen all these games before during the regular season. That's not a good thing. In talking with coaches across the state, I've heard a lot more complaints about the playoff format than the expansion to six classes. One argument against the new format is that matchups decided by lopsided scores in the regular season won't draw many fans in the playoffs. What say you? Vote and post.
  15. I think all teams 6A thru 1A try to play people one way as much as possible. Sometimes a team may only have 1 or 2 guys play both ways and 2 years later they may have 7 going both ways. Just depends on the depth an talent level in that particular year. Obviously larger schools can usually avoid having players go both ways easier than small schools can. A lot of teams have guys that CAN play both ways but they try to limit that to a series or two or only if needed.
  16. Quite frankly I thought Corbin was just as intense and just as focused in the second half. The major difference was NewCath didn't play as awful as they did in the first half. And actually on the road and giving up two scores to now be down 21-16, Corbin still had enough left to stop NCC a couple of times and could have taken the lead late. What looked to be a disaster sack for NewCath when they were up 21-16 with 3 minutes left actually worked out. Now out of FG range, NewCath let the clock run down to under 3 minutes and then punted to the Corbin 2. Had they even kicked a FG Corbin would have got the ball back only down 24-16 and in a lot better field position most likely. Sure NewCath defense played better in the second half, but really Corbin hung in there quite well.
  17. BTW: Look for Boone Co., Ryle, Conner, and the new school to all be 6A. (See article below). Boone County, Conner and Ryle High Schools are all well above capacity. Boone County High School Capacity - 1,440 Students - 1,646 Conner High School Capacity - 1,200 Students - 1,720 Ryle High School Capacity - 1,500 Students - 1,732 Cooper High School will have room for 1,200 students. And the new Randall Cooper High School on Camp Ernst Road that will open in August plans to have varsity teams in all sports, including football. Cooper will compete in a Class 6A football district next season and be eligible for the playoffs, according to principal Michael Wilson. "We chose eligibility so students will not miss any opportunities regarding athletics," Wilson said in an e-mail message. http://news.kypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071114/SPT0402/711140313/1024/SPT
  18. Next Year A: Dayton: Lose a lot with this Senior class and low in numbers behind them. QB and FB return. Might be tough to improve. Bellevue: Lots of RBs back and decent numbers for A. Beechwood: I think they will be down somewhat but the question is how much. One RB back might be enough, might not. Ludlow: In a battle with the others to not miss playoffs, QB getting experience this year has to help. AA: Newport: Should win more if Sophs and Jrs play to potential. LLoyd: Soph class lean, so talented JRs will have to carry team. Holy Cross: Might be around the same as this year, maybe a little under with O losses. NewCath: Large, talented Sr. (QB, RB return) and Soph class, lean Jr class. Not as deep, but still good. AAAAA: CovCath: I think they will be better, but by how much? Highlands: Talent waiting, will be good again. Dixie: Lose a lot of O. Scott: Tough situation to improve with large Sr class leaving. Holmes: Should improve consistancy. AAAAAA: Boone Co.: Lose mucho O. Campbell Co.: I think they will be better on both sides of the ball. SK: Should be better, maybe more consistant. Conner: Should be much better. Ryle: Depth should be better, overall I'm not sure.
  19. Doesn't play one position is probably why. Partly a linebacker, partly a rush end, partly a defensive back, partly a safety.
  20. To beat NewCath is real simple: 1. Hope it rains all week and during the game making it difficult to pass. 2. Jump on NewCath early. Everybody seems to score first or they score and then flounder for awhile. They never look excited to play. 3. Don't get tired on defense especially in the secondary and don't start missing tackles at the LOS because that's when depth and speed take over. 4. Score once on defense and once on special teams.
  21. The point is that 5A Owensboro which is one of the 4 teams still alive limited Boone Co. in a 14-3 win at Boone Co.
  22. Yes, but there is only one ball in play each down. Is there a difference if Farris carries 50 times for 300 yards or if Highlands has three guys carry 50 times for 300 yards? Other than the injury possibility and fatigue where depth is important? Both teams have good offenses that can score and accumulate yards. Both can be limited somewhat (as any team can including Trinity) by a good defense. Granted Highlands does have mutiple weapons and more than BC, but if stopping Farris were all it took to beat BC lots of teams would have done that by now. As for comparisons see below. Highlands scores more points 533 to 425, Boone Co runs for more yards (4050 to 3596) and Highlands passes for more yards (1409 to 1321). BC: Team Total Statistcs (Season-to-Date) Points Scored 425 Points Allowed 257 Total Rushing Yards 4050 Total Rushing Yards Allowed 1350 Total Passing Yards 1321 Total Passing Yards Allowed 1866 Highlands: Team Total Statistcs (Season-to-Date) Points Scored 533 Points Allowed 125 Total Rushing Yards 3596 Total Rushing Yards Allowed 1443 Total Passing Yards 1409 Total Passing Yards Allowed 1457
  23. Not saying Highlands isn't the favorite, and very well may end up state champion. But any team that can travel all the way from Owensboro to Boone County and while missing their star running back therefore not sustaining long drives, but still held Boone County to 3 points is a worthy team. And they may not make the finals. Highlands has really only had problems in one game and that was with Louisville Central, but that game shows that at least some team can play with them. Plus obviously with Highlands you must stop the run first and Owensboro certainly did that against Boone County.

  25. Problem is you just can't decide to do it after not doing it all year. If you have watched the Rebels this year the coaching staff uses Farris as a blocking back for extra pass protection in obvious passing situations. Huh??? I think you could find plenty of other BC players that can pass block. Why not split him out wide or circle him out of the backfield for a pass? Why not try it? He was a wide receiver at times as a Soph and was quite good at it. Why not go three or four wide when up by 21 in a game in the second or third quarters? Why run the ball 14 straight times in that situation? Yeah you will probably score to go up 28 but why not become more balanced?
