They may not have had to...it looked like #19 for Greenwood would have had a shot at a big return on the recovery. Obviously, I don't know how fast he is, and I assume X has plenty of speed, so its not likely he'd have taken it the distance. But, it looks like he'd have had a shot to at least give them a decent starting point. Tough break. That's about as close as you can get on a fumble. Great work on the video, DF.

Congratulations to Somerset. I thought this would be a competitive, high-scoring affair. Breathitt got hit hard with injuries this year and it took away some of their depth. Consequently, this wasn't the first time they wore down later in the game and lost. It happens. I'm proud of the way this team rebounded from a 1-5 start to make a serious run at a region title.

That's for sure...Central would have to be the favorite to win it again, but at this point, I think you could possibly draw names from a hat.

They may have when they thought Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels was going to be their QB. :lol:

It's "mythical", i.e., not real. If you can make an argument that you deserve a "mythical" title, then you can claim it. If Cincy St. X isn't the best team in Cincinnati, it certainly changes Highlands claim. In reality, I don't care who the mythical champion of the greater Cincinnati area is. My point is simply that fake titles can be claimed by anyone with an argument. If that's mind-numbingly painful and insane, so be it. But, thanks for being such a good guy. :thumb:

I saw P'burg play Breathitt County early in the season and was impressed with Burchett. I didn't realize he was 6'3. Glad to hear he's getting some serious interest. His poise and accuracy was impressive to me.

Yes. They can claim it. It's mythical...if you have any decent support, which they do with the win over Cincy St. X, then you can claim a mythical championship. If the playoffs go as expected, then I also believe Highlands can claim the mythical KY state championship in addition to the real 5A title. Highlands, Trinity and St. X are generally regarded as the best teams in the state...Trinity and X both lost to Cincy St. X. Highlands beat them. So, the way I see it, if the Bluebirds take care of business, they should have one real championship and two mythical ones to tweet about.

2002 stands out to me. Not because it rained a lot throughout the season, but because of a stretch in the playoffs when it rained a lot and on a lot of days. Breathitt County played Belfry in the region finals that year and their field was in as bad a shape as any I've ever seen. Our QB ran off tackle early in the game and when he got up the right side of his body was literally covered in mud. The field looked like pig pen. The fact was that there was a substantial amount of rain for about a week straight, and when you're that late in the season the field is already torn up, and you have to practice during the week...it was just one of those things. I've never seen anything comparable to that.

Whatever word you want to use, flat or something else, when a team goes into a game with that mindset they often don't play their best. Now, they may play as hard as they can physically, but mentally and emotionally they're not as sharp and focused as they should be. So, when he says, "unfocused or not, HHS got our best effort on the field...", that sounds like an oxymoron. If they were unfocused, HHS didn't get their best effort regardless of how hard they played physically. And, there's absolutely merit to the idea that the HHS game being sandwiched between two wins against the Louisville powers and a game between an in-city rival. We see this time and again in sports when teams get up for a tough part of the schedule and then play much worse against an opponent that isn't expected to be as good as what they've been facing. I remember UK a couple years ago (I think) when they had a tough trio of games that included the upset of LSU, then they come back against Mississippi State, whom many had pencilled in as a W, and got trounced 31-14. Somewhere along the way, somebody was flat, or unfocused, or whatever you want to call it, whether it was LSU or UK or both.

And, if that's the case, they obviously didn't bring the right mindset and focus to the game. Nobody to blame but themselves, but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Sometimes teams just aren't ready, whether that's physically, emotionally, mentally, whatever and their opponent benefits. "Flat", whether a person chooses to view it as an excuse or not, is a fact of life in sports. It happens and it affects performance and consequently outcomes of games. JMO

:thumb:As a completely neutral, outside observer, I agree. The last several years, more often than not, it seems like X is the best team in the state, only to lose to Trinity when it matters most. Until they actually make good on the promise, why should I expect anything different? FWIW, I think X will win this game, very possibly by a decent margin. But, if you asked me today who will win in Bowling Green, I'm going with Trinity.

Who is this game more important to? I know it's a huge rivalry and both teams want to win badly. But, in the grand scheme of things, all the pressure in this series is on X, IMO. How many times has Trinity lost to them during the season, only to beat them when it counts? How many times has X had the clear favorite, only to lose the rematch with everything at stake? Hasn't Xavier beaten Trinity soundly in at least a couple of these games before losing at the end? My point is this. Saint X seems to be a clear favorite again this year. What happens if they lose? I won't say Trinity doesn't care if they lose (I know that's not true), but they have a history of bouncing back in the playoffs no matter how bad they get beat the first time around nor how good X is supposed to be. They know they can win the rematch, because they've done it before. X, on the other hand, can't seem to get over the hump. Being the favorite, does X need to win this game more?

They lost three offensive linemen, I think. Maybe more. I think some of those guys played some on the defensive side at times. Ryan Allen - WR/DB - He was the best and most dependable WR on the team and a strong defensive player. And, he provided some strong leadership for the team, IMO. And, one more key guy and I can't think of his team. I think total they only lost 6 seniors maybe, but most, if not all, of them were starters. However, what they lost can't be blamed for this season. Neither can the loss of Chapman. To be blunt, Breathitt doesn't look like a team that's in shape to me. And, the results support that. P'burg scored the final 19 points of the game to beat Breathitt. The Bobcats looked gassed. They couldn't move the ball offensively and couldn't cover the receivers on the other side. Against Perry Central and Johnson Central, both games were competitive and close at the half, before Breathitt gets run off the field in the second half. LCA was just a massacre. Breathitt County has been playing players on both sides of the ball ever since I've been watching them, so that's not a valid excuse for what I'm seeing from this team. You can't fix "out of shape" this late in the season.

New QB. Same result. I'm not sure why they made the switch at this point, unless they've thrown in the towel for this season and are preparing for the future.

I'm one and I didn't vote for him. He should have gone pro after his junior season. :lol:

Seeing as how Kyle Huff is the backup QB, I seriously doubt that's true. Jade Haddix isn't the problem for Breathitt County. Breathitt is a running team and running is Jade's strength. They don't pass that much, and when they do, he can be inaccurate at times, but his WR's are also inconsistent. He plays the position pretty well for the high school level. Trent is a promising freshman who I expect to be a strong producer over the next few seasons, but putting a freshman in at QB at this point in the season isn't going to "fix" anything. IMO, it would make it worse. Breathitt just needs to get to work. Forget about the past and move forward. I think their confidence is shattered at this point and they have to find a way to get that back. To play these games for 4 quarters and not get down when something goes wrong. They have to find a way to stop the bleeding, in general and in these games. I think they were tied 7-7 with PCC at the half, before losing by 23. I still believe Fugate should be playing offense only. He's usually gassed by the 4th quarter from playing both sides. He's much too valuable to their offense to have that happen, IMO.

Breathitt plays in a weak district. Regardless of what they do there, these games right now are showing that they can't compete with the types of teams they'll have to come playoff time. To be fair, the Bobcats don't have a ton of depth, and they've been hit by the injury bug. Nobody knows it because Fugate and Haddix are the only two guys who get mentioned. Cody Pritchard, the other RB, had 600-700 yards last year...he provided a nice complement to Fugate, a guy who could get some yards while defenses keyed on the other two. He's out and may not be back. That loss hurts more than people realize. Also, lost a lineman to a broken arm. This just proves that football is a team sport...a great player can't do it alone. But, that's no excuse for the performances BC has turned in the last two weeks. I wasn't overly concerned with the losses to SC and P'burg, because both were close games that Breathitt could have easily won, and they were against two really good teams. However, to lose to Perry Central and LCA by a combined 65 points is inexcusable. Last year against LCA, Haddix got hurt and Fugate moved to QB and just took the snap and ran. LCA couldn't stop him. He had one of the best games of his career. Nice job by LCA to stop him this season. It doesn't get any easier for the Bobcats...Johnson Central and Hazard are up next. At this point, it looks like they'll be 1-6 heading into district play. So, which is the real Breathitt team...the one that played nailbiters with two strong teams, SC and P'burg, or the one that's getting steamrolled? Tough season after the expectations we started with.
