I was not very impressed with JC's intensity last night. They played dead the whole first half. I think the defense played pretty well all night, but the offense was sluggish, especially running the ball. They did come out the second half and play much better. They better get ready for next Friday at London!

Johnson Central and Paintsville is a big one in the mountains.

What does Shelby Valley bring to the field this year? How good will they be?

I was pretty impressed by JC's play. It seemed like they dominated every aspect of play. I think Belfry was a little shocked by the Eagles effectiveness throwing the ball. Ratliff seemed very confident in the pocket and JC's pass protection was pretty good. Belfry was very good at taking our big fullback out of the game by pretty much shutting him down. Grim looked good. He ran hard and was not afraid to lay a hit on defenders. His speed was a factor that Belfry could not answer. JC's offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage all night. I noticed that JC played everyone that was on the bench. They got a lot of work out of future feature player Chase Richardson(So.) and Nathan Dillion(Fr.). JC looked to have alot more depth this year than in the past. I'm sure Belfry will improve every week and by the playoffs will be one of the teams to beat for the 2A title. Congrats to JC and Belfry and good luck this season.

I think this will be a good one to watch.

I could be wrong, but I think that you'll see the Eagles air it out a little more this year. The QB is looking pretty good. As for the running game it should be nearly as strong.

Really we don't play our big rivalries much anymore. Belfry was always a big game that we don't play anymore, we used to be in the same district. We still play Paintsville for bragging rights. There were probably between 7000-7500 at the Apple Bowl last year. Without a rich winning tradition its hard to establish strong rivalries. I think Ashland and JC could turn into a big rivalry for both teams that has huge gates.

The Russell and Boyd games are big for you guys! Do you think Boyd will lose any luster since its no longer a district game? As for the other side of the region it looks like it will be Dixie Heights, Grant County, Holmes and Scott.

I think you'll see a big year for Blake Johnson, FB and LB at Johnson Central. He had a strong year last year and finished 2nd Team All State. He's trimmed down a little and he's much stronger than last year.

Have any of you saw the new proposed district for our 5A competition for next year. Its posted on the KHSAA website. It has Ashland, JC, Bryan Station, Montgomery County and Woodford County. How do you think it this will effect the Boyd County and Ashland rivalry?

I think it really depends on your persective. I'm sure Trinity has a much different idea of what being successful is than say a Magoffin County. Due to location and demographics, MC will probably never win a state championship or a region title, and a district title would take alot. A program like this would consider 5 to 7 wins and making the playoffs year in and year out a success. I'm sure nothing short of a state title would define Trinity's or St. X's year as a success.

This is alot premature! Anything can happen during a season. A couple of key injuries can relegate about any high school team from contender to bottom of the pack. Barring any unfortunate circumstances this should be one whale of a game though. If everything holds true, you might want to go ahead and pick-up your tickets because I predict a sell-out.

Agreed! That will be quite an undertaking. Long days and year around. I really think he will do a good job though.

The new H.C. at Magoffin County is........ Chester McCoy a former defensive coordinator at Johnson Central. He has coached at Greenup County, Sheldon Clark and JC. I think he's a perfect pick for the job. He'll get the program turned around.

He did have a great game at Ashland, but he played that way every week. We just had to us him more against Ashland. Blume was pretty much contained in the first 2 and 1/2 quarters.

With Josh's improved strength and work ethic, I can see him earning a starting position on the D-line, probably nose. He looked great in the spring game and just a junior to be. Ryan Baldwin(SR) will most likely return to his D-line spot and then you have Chase Richardson at DT-DE (Soph), Nathaniel Dials(JR) and Coty Conley(SR) at DE. And then you have a couple of young men who had not played since M.S. who have a great deal of potential that came out for spring ball. I was impressed with the Combs kid in the spring game. Big, strong and quick, looks like a D1 football player. I think theres a whole lot to be optomistic about for 2006!

I don't think many have denied that on here! Yes, Beach was a better back.

I think I would put Jones first, then Beach, then Blume, West and Gross.

I have heard that the board has made a selection, but it cannot be let out of the bag until a formal announcement is made next week. I also heard that he was offered a very attractive package and will be allowed to hire a couple of assistants. I can say that the selection has been a longtime assistance at a couple of area football teams and served as a coordinator at his last job. Maybe a commitment has finally been made to actually have a football team that is competative at MC, and not just one that walks on the field.
