Johnson Central 27 Belfry 3 (Varsity Scrimmage)

Featured Replies

The Golden Eagles dominated Belfry at Belfry. It would have been much worse, but an interception and 2 fumble recoveries by Central didn't change the possession in the 10 play format. JK Ratliff threw the ball all over the field with alot of zip and precision, and the running game was strong too. Its early, but the team is much more balanced than last year, and on this night, they took the 2-time defending 2A state champs to the woodshed.

I went to this game, and I must say I was disappointed in Belfrys performance. Body size was way down (from what I could tell) from last year.

Johnson Central dressed 66? players, and didn't play exceptionally well either. They had quite a few good skill players though.

I believe Johnson Central will have a GREAT season.

Belfry will kick it into high gear after the preseason. Come district time they will be ready to go as well.

Come on guys.. their the Belfry Pirates.:D

Belfry needs a lot of work on both sides of the ball. The secondary was gashed all night by the JC QB. JC looks really good this early in the season and if Belfry can tighten things up they will be alright but if dont then things could look grim. But then again its just pre-season so who knows?????

I agree with both of you guys, and there's little question that Belfry will once again be a major force in 2A. My first time to the new stadium, and its second to none I've seen. Just a scrimmage, but the fact that Central didn't play exceptionally well (alot of confusion on defense at times) made it all the more impressive. Both teams are better than what they showed. The bottom line was that Belfry never could make the big play and Central did several times.

It was just a scrimmage, and I look for both teams to have a good season. Belfry will get the kinks worked out, they always do. I also agree Belfry has one of the nicest facilities this side of lexington.

Guys dont put nothing into Belfrys performance. Belfry for one basicaly tries stuff and played it as a scrimage and nothing else but a practice. Belfry has some good size on the O line and and alot of speed on the d line. It was a simple practice and get into action for them. JC will have a good team as always. But we must remember that JC wins this scrimage every year including the 2 state chapionship years.

I agree with you. Although you can get alot out of this scrimmages and hopefully JC did tonight, dont base what you saw out of Belfry tonight as what you will see come August 18th. For as long as I can remember Belfry uses the preseason like pro teams in that they play their starters a few reps and allow the back up to play most of the game.

Nice to hear JC has a valid passing attack this. Something this school has not had in a long time. The factor of a balance attack alone will be a big improvement of teams of years past. Keep it up Eagles!:thumb:

Absolutely right. Just to clarify though, JC rarely has a good team (excepting the last 2 years) and Belfry won the scrimmage, 14-7 I believe, David Jones' senior year.

I thought Russell was the defending champs in AA.

They are the defending champs..Belfry was the two time defending champs the two previous years before Russell.

My bad. Sorry.

I had heard that Johnson Central was going to be running alittle shotgun this year with the passing abilities of JK Ratliff? Did they show any of that tonight or was it primarly a running attack? What Running Backs got most of the carries?

Johnson Central's record in 2000 was 11-1. However, in the next three seasons between Bill Musick's tenure and Jim Matney's arrival, the Golden Eagles seem to peak during the Belfry scrimmage and it was all downhill for the rest of the season.

I like Belfry's approach to scrimmages. They never seem to care about winning them, but they play a lot of kids and they are always ready for district play.

I think Johnson Central has a legitimate shot at matching the 2000 team's regular season record and to advance deep into the playoffs, but the result of this scrimmage doesn't mean much.

Ran some shotgun, and quite a bit of running out of the pocket and throwing, which was nice to see. Shawn Grim had a couple long runs and a long reception, and Chase Richardson scored the first TD on about a 40 yard run. JK spread the ball real well. Tommy Taylor had his usual good game on the receiving end, and the Dials kid had several catches. Belfry did a good job of stuffing the run a few times, but the passing game kept them off balance all night, which opened up the run. Belfry in fact played their starters (or at least the same players) basically the whole time, until the second game which consisted of the JV for the most part. Both teams substituted very little the first couple hours.

Sounds like i should have made the drive over there. Good to hear JC is using all of its capabilities and not just being a run dominated team.
