Johnson Central's record in 2000 was 11-1. However, in the next three seasons between Bill Musick's tenure and Jim Matney's arrival, the Golden Eagles seem to peak during the Belfry scrimmage and it was all downhill for the rest of the season.

 

I like Belfry's approach to scrimmages. They never seem to care about winning them, but they play a lot of kids and they are always ready for district play.

 

I think Johnson Central has a legitimate shot at matching the 2000 team's regular season record and to advance deep into the playoffs, but the result of this scrimmage doesn't mean much.

 

 

The only great season Music ever had. The point was that Central rarely had a good team in the past 37 years or so. Maybe 4 playoff appearances, and 1 or 2 playoff wins. With respect to the approach to scrimmages, I couldn't agree more, except that I do think teams try to win them. Both ran very basic, straight-forward offenses though. Nothing fancy either way tonight.

Typical opening scrimmage, JC came to play and Belfry came to practice. Kind of ugly from a fan standpoint, but I wouldn't pin my hopes on the "results".

 

JC's QB did look very good and this is a good JC team. They have the size they always have and a good bit of speed. They looked as good as I have seen them look this early.

 

Belfry played a lot of kids in a lot of places and I'm not sure I saw much of their base offense. When it comes to Belfry's scrimmages, what you see is never what you get. It is a learning experience and you get a lot of different looks.

One thing is Belfry never really wants to show much of what they are going to do on offense to opposing scouts there and use it as a practice to improve. Matney approaches it as a game and beating Belfry. Which is good for them I guess to help build JC confidence because to be a winning team you have to have that winning attitude. They are starting to develop that and I say Jim wanted to use this scrimage to develop it a little bit more.

I'm sure there will be big play potential, but like everyone says. This was just a scrimmage. I always loved how Coach Haywood viewed scrimmages. Don't get to to worked up, it's just a practice. Get your techniques down, and we'll see what we need to work on.

 

Belfrys Center #61 had a couple of bad snaps, and there wasn't much of a pass rush when Johson Central threw it out of Gator, but I'm sure all the kinks will be out come district time.

I also noticed they worked a lot of players in on the defensive line, particularly at Nose Gaurd. I think this shows Belfry will have a lot of depth, and Coach Haywood will be able to work in some young guys this season.

 

I love watching this district play each other.

But seriously, Belfry is going to be as good as Coach Haywood and his staff can make them so I'll say that it will be Belfry/Russell in the East.

 

I have watched every Belfry pre-season scrimmage except 3 since 97' so I know what to expect but I was a little shocked to see that it seemed that JC was somewhat stronger than Belfry

I was pretty impressed by JC's play. It seemed like they dominated every aspect of play. I think Belfry was a little shocked by the Eagles effectiveness throwing the ball. Ratliff seemed very confident in the pocket and JC's pass protection was pretty good. Belfry was very good at taking our big fullback out of the game by pretty much shutting him down. Grim looked good. He ran hard and was not afraid to lay a hit on defenders. His speed was a factor that Belfry could not answer. JC's offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage all night. I noticed that JC played everyone that was on the bench. They got a lot of work out of future feature player Chase Richardson(So.) and Nathan Dillion(Fr.). JC looked to have alot more depth this year than in the past. I'm sure Belfry will improve every week and by the playoffs will be one of the teams to beat for the 2A title. Congrats to JC and Belfry and good luck this season.

Where did JC play Ian Welch on offense (assuming he played), and how did he look? As a freshman last season, he looked like he had a world of potential.

I don't believe he played any offense during the varsity scrimmage, but he played safety and maybe a little corner, and made a couple nice tackles. He played QB when the second string offense scrimmaged.

Does anyone know if JC has a scrimmage this upon coming friday or saturday? I dont think they had one this time last year.

Yes, they do...Shelby Valley at JC. I think it starts around 7.

Problems within the Red Army is a good thing. Other than the obvious seniors last season , #20 was the only player that stood out. How did #20 do he's a linebacker and RB.

Belfry needs to learn to defend the short passing game and pass some themselves because Ivan learned last year these (skill players ) are the keys to beating back the Red Army. See you in November , hope it isn't as cold as last two years.
