Johnson Central 27 Belfry 3 (Varsity Scrimmage)

Featured Replies

I think you have to be very careful in getting "too high or too low" on any team...based on the results of scrimmage play. A scrimmage is what it is...a practice against some new blood. nothing more..nothing less. These remarks are not meant to take away from either teams over all performance. However, as a former coach...you try to use a scrimmage to gage what you need to work on...and gleen a little insight as to how your players are grasping the system.

Good Luck to all the mountain teams!

Welcome to BGP, Josey!

I agree with the points that you made, and I am sure that Coach Matney is reminding his players that they looked impressive in last year's scrimmages, but lost their opening game to South Laurel. I am guessing that JC's players will be sick of hearing about last year's South Laurel game by the time that the season opens. Likewise,

I am also sure that Belfry's staff will be reminding its players that they have lost scrimmage games to Johnson Central in the past and gone on to enjoy great seasons.

Sorry JC fans, but its true as long as coach Haywood is coaching Belfry, scrimmages will be nothing more but a glorified practice session. As a player you look at a little different, with alot of intensity and emotion. Its the first time your facing a different opponent other than you second string. One thing thats true is as a player you play alot of different positions, during these scrimmages. During practice your starting runningback, you show up at the scrimmage and thier trying you at guard. Its just the way Haywood approches it. Its a way for him and his staff to anaylize every position, and whats best for the team. I think that is how most of the seasoned Coaches and top programs enter scrimmages

I dont think in the four years I played at Belfry we ever won a scrimmage. If we did it wasnt talked about after the game or in practice. the only things that were addressed was what was taking from it and what we needed to work on. Its hard to really win a game that is a ten play format, you cant really get into the flow of the game, and if you really think about it, it dont work into Belfrys favor very much. Belfry has always been a ground a pound team with long sustained drives, and ball control.

By years end the Bucs will be talking playoffs, and more than likely State Championship. Win or lose in the pre-season.
