I agree this top 10 is pretty bad the top 5 are easy. Sheldon Clark, Corbin and Whitley are debateable, but probably deserve to be in. WHere's Leslie? 10-2 last year, a win in the first week this year. They should be there without a doubt. You could also make a case for Breathitt County a big winner over Fleming. And possibly even Clay. The bottom line is that Somerset and Middlesboro were beaten by a combined 80 points. Neither deserves a spot at this point of the season.

I think that's exactly the point. They routed a 1st year program. I do indeed hope good things are ahead for the Mt Lions. But let's realize they beat a bunch of guys who last year probably had NEVER played football in their lives. I'm just saying it's not much of an accomplishment.

Let's not get overexcited. Pineville beat a team playing it's first ever football game against a school that has no feeder program.

Why is Hazard taking so long to make a HC pick?

That would make no sense. South is only 20 minutes to SW and Pulaski. And they are much closer to Mercer and LIncoln. To me, the Districts are fair and travel times are similar. I don't see any justification for switching either.

I must be very confused. Aren't the 2 additional state champions still going to have to earn it? Are there not very good teams in each class that you'll have to beat along the way?? To imply that the 2 additional teams that win titles won't have earned them, is a disservice to those young men and the effort that they will have put in.

I really don't understand Cobb's complaint. I think it's a GREAT situation for the Briar Jumpers. They return to traditional rivalrys. The fans will care more. The attendance will be better. And I don't think Somerset will have any trouble competing. I think Cobb just likes to gripe sometimes.

Thanks for the research. Since the states that I listed were deemed not good football, take a look at several on Sandmans list. Alabama - about the same population as Ky - 6 total champions. I don't think anyone in Alabama thinks their football is watered down. Oklahoma - much smaller than Kentucky in Population and they crown 8 champions, again - does anyone in Oklahoma think their football is watered down? Arkansas - I'd say their football is similar to Ky's in High school. They are smaller than Ky and offer 7 state titles. It looks like those that are using state comparisons as a justification AGAINST going to 6 classes are going to need to look for a new reason to complain.

Maybe what coach Cobb is referring to is that HE wasn't polled. HE wasn't givin a chance to voice his thoughts. The reality is that you'll never get everyone to agree on anything. As a result if you involve too many people, progress will not happen. Most decisions are made by a small group. If that was the case with this so be it.

I keep hearing those against the 6 class system say that dividing Kentucky into 6 classes is too many. There won't be enough schools in each class. The only state comparisons I have seen are Ohio, Tn, Texas, etc.. I thought I'd take a look at other states that are SMALLER than Kentucky who ranks 26th in population according to the 2000 census. I just took these at random, but I think if you researched every single state below Ky, you'd find ONLY four that have 4 classes or less. 32nd Largest State - Kansas Has 6 classes - which all have 33 or less schools 39th Idaho Has 6 classes - with 25 in the largest class and only 25 each in the other 5 classes. 50th Wyomning - the smallest state in the Union based on population Has 5 classes with 11-12 in each class All the states base their classes on school enrollment. So as I see it, Kentucky has MORE teams than smaller states in each class. Detractors will try to explain this away, but the facts are the facts - a Kentucky 6 class system is justified based on what other states are doing.

A sane voice. Thanks for disagreeing but having the ability to see the other side. And to the person who said Kentucky was a SMALL state. KY is 25th out of 50 in population. So we're really average. And most of the other states in near population play in MORE than 4 classes. Only 4 states have 4 classes or less.

I don't think adding 2 state champions for a total of 6, is going to make winning a state title a cake walk. With 216 football playing schools and 4 championships 1.8% of the schools win state titles. With 216 football playing schools and 6 championships a whopping 2.7% will win state titles!!!! I think that still qualifies as difficult. As for letting 1-9 and 2-8 schools in the playoffs, that's already happening. Again, this arguement seems silly. I don't see how giving more teams/schools a chance to play more games is a bad thing. The cream will still rise to the top. THe best teams will still win the titles. The truth is that instead of 212 teams ending on a losing note, now only 210 team's seasons will end on a sour note.

No, disagreeing with me isn't what make them narrow minded and selfish. Bemoaning the fact that their state titles won't mean as much does. I can't find any negatives at all. I'm normally pretty good at seeing the other sides position, but in this case the position seems to be: 1) Too many teams will make the playoffs which will water it down 2) Too many teams will will state titles which will water it down I don't see how either position is valid. A total of 6 state champions instead of 4, doesn't seem to water down anything. And even if it does, I would think that in this case the needs/wants of the many outweigh the needs/wants of the few. I feel that those who fail to realize that are in this case, narrow minded . And because they are taking into account ONLY how it could possibly affect their team or school, instead of seeing how this is a good thing for the great majority of schools, I do indeed think that they have selfish interests at heart.

I continue to be amazed with those that are against the recent realignment. I see no negatives. None. Sports is an extra curicular activity. One that helps build character, commitment, and introduces one to compeitition. All of those things can still be accomplished if the student/team plays in a class with fewer teams. So now two more teams will end the year with wins. I don't see how that prevents kids from learning the hard lessons of life that you're not always a winner. My experience has been that most kids handle losing better than winning anyway, so maybe those extra two teams that end the year on victories will somehow help those kids to learn to deal with success. Also, while I don't think it is necessary to justify Kentucky's actions by looking at what other states do (what is that teaching our children? that we should only do things if other states do them?), only 4 other states have 4 or fewer classes of football. Kentucky is ranked 25th out of 50 states in population, so I don't see a problem with 6 classes as compared to the other 46 states that have more than 4 classes. Finally, why does everyone think it's all about T and X. For some it may be. But what about teams like Williamsburg, Paintsville, Hazard, Harlan, Fairview etc.... Those schools with smaller A populations have such small boy populations that it's almost impossible for them to compete with the larger A schools. It allows the smallest schools in Kentucky to compete on a more even footing. It also narrows the disparity between top and bottom in all classes, which theoretically should make for more competitive post seasons. I think it's a good idea. And with all due respect, I think those that are so against it, are being narrow minded and have only their own selfish interests at heart.

If Randy McCoy wants the job and they don't give it to him, than the folks at Hazard are crazy. The man has won in HS and in College. He can coach and has done so at a high level. He old enough to have expierence, but young enough to have in your program for a while. He likes Eastern Kentucky. He seems like the perfect fit.

I hope Corbin stays in 2A, I'd really like to see the days of the Middlesboro, Somerset, Corbin rivalry renewed. To me those were the glory days of Corbin football. If they move to 3A, there will be no rivals and as a result, I don't think you'll see the interest level at Corbin where it was back in the old days.

This is a great idea. I would think if you surveyed everyone OUTSIDE of Louisville about 75% would be in favor. When the vote happens, I think it will reflect that. I see nothing wrong with allowing such a high percentage of teams in the playoffs, you still have to win to advance. And I don't see how having 6 state champions would diminish the accomplishment of winning a state title. Wait 10 years, then go back and ask any champion (other than St X, Trinity, and Male) if their championship has been tarnished because there are 5 other champions. I would say about 100% would say no. And if they go by male enrollment, I don't think the option of playing up should be allowed. If you are in a class, you are in a class.

McCoy had some really good success at Elkhorn City. I think he may have even coached the Kentucky All Stars one year (and I think they actually beat Indiana that season). I don't think he ever won a region, but obviously knows how to work in a small school. McCoy would be a very good choice.
